I am a transitional intern doing my gen med rotation. I was introduced to this book by my intern 2 years ago when I was a student during the first week of my gen med rotation. It was great then, and it is great now. I hate carrying stuff in my white coat, especially books of this size. But I refer to it constantly during the day. In rounds, in the ED while working up a patient, while reviewing a patient's labs. Numerous times each day. I have two students with me now, and I've convinced them after one week that they should buy this book. It's that good.Details, ie, what it offers.DDX, there is a DDX section in the front for common presenting symptoms. This is perhaps the books only weakness. It is too scant. Many common symptoms aren't included. The differentials offered are adequate, but the section could be expanded.Systems Based Chapters. CV, Pulm, GI, ID,Neuro, Renal etc. The stuff you see everday on the wards is reviewed very well, with signs, symptoms, diagnostic workup and treatment. These chapters are not everything you need to know. I do more reading at night on specific ailments my patients are presenting with. But in the ED when you are accepting a thyroid storm, CVA, GIB, whatever, its there and it will get you through the admission and the evening until morning rounds with the attending.Another great feature is the section that helps to interpret many labs you may order. Elevated, normal or low anything, and it provides a great differential. It can make you look smart on rounds.Finally, there is a short formulary in the back, which I never refer to since I have both pharmacopaeia (spelling?) and epocrates.This book is great for med students and transitional interns. Prelims and categoricals probably can pass on this. I'd say the next step is the little red book put out by Stanford (Standford Internal Medicine pocket guide? Not sure of the name.) It is much more compact, concise, etc. with citations to the literature. But if you are a med student, buy it NOW, before your gen med rotation.Good Luck.

i bought the 4th edition 2 years ago, and i found it to be very useful, not only during wards, or medical school but also for a quick review when preparing the exams for the residency in my country. it has almost all the information you need to move around in hospital. it has also a large number of formulas and tables, not to mention the new "differential diagnosis" section. it will never replace a textbook, but will serve you as a quick reference guide, and a quick subject review. Buy it, you won't regret it !!!

As the other reviews here say, Ferri has a lot of useful content for the wards - Physical exam findings, differential diagnoses, brief & useful info on common medical conditions.But it is too big and does not really fit into pockets. Since I can't have it with me, I don't use it that much.I suggest buying this if you want it use it more for occasional reference, but not so much as a frequent reference on the wards. This book would be very useful if it is in a PDA program.

I’ve been a Chess Coach now for 15 years and I have never ever come across an "insane" book quite like this (Except that fat Laszlo Polgar book which has 5,334 Mates, Combinations and Games). I’m recommending this book now to all my younger students who need to fill their heads with these common tactical patterns. This is great for my students who cannot get online to do tactics (Chesstempo.com is, in my opinion, the best site for Tactics and students always need to be doing (Blitz) tactics). I will now give my best about what I dislike and like about this book.The Negatives: #1: The Book Cover. If there was a hardback edition I would have quickly purchased it. This paperback edition is going to get lots of mileage and I can imagine at some point it will be bent up and scuffed in my coach bag. #2: No board coordinates on the diagrams is kind of a bust for my young students who are still learning Algebraic Notation. However, I guess people can say it is a plus since it will teach you to look at the board like that. #3: All diagrams are from White’s point of view. It may be a personal taste, but I enjoy looking at positions from the attacking player’s perspective (Black included). That may bother some people but others not.The Positives: #1: Dang son, didn’t I tell you this book at 3,003 puzzles?! Holy Crap! I’m wondering if I will be able to get through most of them in 1 year. I doubt it but let’s do another review when I finish it. I think the author, Tsvetkov, did an amazing job assembling so many RECENT puzzles! He comments in the Introduction, “Most of the games… from recent practice, 2016-2018,”. #2: The solution to the puzzle is located below the Diagram which saves me from flipping to the back of the book for the answer (causing more wear and tear on the book). If this bothers people I suggest covering up the answer with a sticky note, write the answer to the problem, then check it. I also encourage my students to take a pencil to problems and draw lines they are looking at to see the big picture when the tactic is solved. #3: Large Diagrams. No, my eyes are not getting bad and I can see just fine, I guess I enjoy looking at a good-sized diagram than squinting to see. Some people may notice that since the diagrams are larger pixilation can also be noticed, that really doesn’t bother me. #4: GREAT commentary of the puzzle solutions, the author gives the reader “tips”, “rules”, and useful comments to how he got the answer. I believe students really need this part in their Chess education from stronger players: How the tactic is being analyzed. Sometimes there are other sub-lines and he will address them. #5: All types of Tactical patterns (and Checkmates) given. The author sometimes labels what type of tactic the reader is looking at, which is helpful if you haven’t seen it before. #6: The Variations are not extremely long, and I find that helpful for growing students not to frustrate them. “the maximum length of lines being capped at 6moves/12 plies,” says the author. After going through the first 50 puzzles I’ve noticed more 3 movers which is perfect for Intermediate players and Advanced players trying to grow their Chess Vision. #7: The Price of the book is fair for the Paperback edition and worth every penny. I’m old school and I enjoy having a good book in my hands with my coffee in the evenings. The Kindle version is cheaper, but you will not be able to really cover up the solutions if you are aiming to solve these one by one.Overall: This should be “The Last Tactics Book You Will Ever Need” – get it. The Positives should outweigh the negatives on this one. I hope you found this review helpful. I’m recommending it to all student levels from (500 to 2200).

I guess it's the Yin-Yang principle, but some of my likes for this book are dislikes for other reviewers: 1) Lack of board coordinates. Forces you to conceptualize the algebraic move, which in turn should strengthen your skill at calculation. (I say should strengthen, because this continues to be a weakness for me, one that I'm working on.) 2) Lack of a thematic approach to the puzzles. Again, I see this as a strength. A normal chess game will present you with a chaos of choices, not an organized series of pins, x-rays, discoveries, etc. An organized grouping of puzzles by type has its place, but organizing them by type kind of gives away the answer. 3) Concise description of the solution. Lots of chess books get too wordy. This one cuts to the chase and tells you what you need to know. 4) English improved over other titles by this author. I'm not a stickler for perfect English. In fact, I enjoy the quaint and unexpected usage found with ESL writers (professional like Joseph Conrad, nonprofessional like what you find in YT comments on chess games). However, unclear writing is usually not a good thing, especially when it comes to a book on chess. I found no unclear writing here. Maybe Mr Tsvetkov found a buddy to help review his work.Dislikes: only one, the close proximity of the puzzle solution to the puzzle itself. I totally understand the author's reluctance to avoid reproducing the solution with a second copy of the position. This would have doubled the size of the book. However, a couple of carriage returns moving the solution a few lines down from the puzzle would have done wonders in giving the reader a better chance to avoid seeing the solution on the page turn. In any event, you have to train yourself NOT to look at the solution when you first look at the puzzle. This is easily done on the Kindle where at first glimpse of the puzzle, you click on it. This will enlarge it on the screen and take it away from any text on the page.I prefer the eBook format myself because it's so portable, because you don't have to set up the position on a chess board, and because it's so much cheaper than other formats. But to each their own.All in all, this book offers a fresh look at tactics for some or a good review of tactics for others (who think they already know this stuff but probably don't).

Very nice book. Lots of puzzles and nice puzzles. Initially I suspected a simple puzzle book, but the puzzles are creative. Some may not like that the answers are at the bottom of the puzzle, but I am not one of those people, I hate having to go back and forth to check answers, here it is on the same page. A thing to keep in mind is that the author gives an written explanation of the answer, so it is nice to have the puzzle and the explanation on the same page. I think it would be crazy to have to flip back and forth for every puzzle, in ordered to read the explanation. You are not just given an answer, but the author explains why the answer is correct. You just have to be honest with yourself and not cheat by peaking at the answers. he style of book reminds me of lev alburts pocket book (I cant recall the exact title) except that this is a super sized version. Great book and nice explanations, something many puzzle books lack.

Of course I haven't finished this yet; that may take me years. But so far, the book seems quite useful for practice and quite carefully authored. The answers would be better located elsewhere, I suppose, but their current placement isn't causing me any real problems.I have the kindle edition, and it's a convenience. I'll lug it along on vacation, gladly. I normally don't review so fast, but I thought I'd help to soften the impact of harsher reviews with which I just can`t agree.

As far as the content, the recipes are great, but there are a few aesthetic issues that affect the readability-- indeed, the usability-- of this book. For a younger person these might well be non-issues, but for a person with 77 year old eyes, well, let's just say that there are some changes that would be easily accomplished, but a letter to the editor with my concerns went unanswered. Here are my gripes which keep this from being a five star book for us: (1) Tiny print. Really tiny. Don't the producers of this realize that a cookbook is often laid open on a countertop, or placed in a clear stand? The tiny print (think telephone directory) does make space for the full page pictures of the finished result; Perhaps smaller pictures would allow larger BLACK print which could be read without bending and squinting. On the plus side, all of the recipes are on one page or two facing pages, so it can be used in a stand without having to remove the book from the stand (or countertop) with messy hands to turn the page. (2) Another semi-failing is referring to a sauce that is on another page and requires time and effort to prepare. As this is always listed in the ingredients, a friendlier format (larger type, better contrast) might go a long way to solving this. However, if there is a sauce or another recipe that is on another page, a note at the top of the ingredient list would be helpful. They do this sometimes, sometimes not. So, when we look at the full page (wasteful, but appetizing) picture of a perfectly prepared and arranged plate, we have learned to peruse the entire recipe rather than saying "Yummy!" to ourselves and launching in to preparation of a dish in a hurried manner. Other recipe books have even worse (IMHO) issues: my wife has rewritten the list of ingredients on her favorite recipes in The Happy Herbivore in large, readable print, and made note to make a sauce or other precursor first before following a given recipe. And she scans the ingredient list (always a good habit) so as to not have any surprises ("Gee, I'm fresh out of Mongolian kumquat extract.") in this book. As I noted above, it IS one of our go-to books.

The Happy Herbivore series changed my life. I have been cooking my entire life and vegan for 30 years. I have a ton of cookbooks but when I came across that very fist Lindsay Nixon recipe my eyes popped out of my head - this looked EASY and it looked DELICIOUS - I ran out and bought Everyday Happy Herbovore first and WOW!! I’ve had all 6 of her cookbooks now for 3 years and I cannot pick my favorite. Lindsay Nixon is a star to me. Since I discovered these easy cookbooks I cook for myself all the time. I lost everything 20 pounds eating onion rings, Mac & cheez, meatlof - and don’t even get me started on the burgers! I’m traveling to visit family and I am buying this one to ship ahead so I can feed myself. I’ve also bought many of Lindsay’s books for friends and her YouTube videos a funny and informative also. Im so freaking happy with these books!! Thanks, Lindsay!

If you like to see what it’s going to look like before you try to make the recipe, then you will enjoy this cookbook. There are not photos with every single recipe, but the majority of the recipes do have photos. Some of the recipes are old fashioned recipes such as baked beans, potato salad, stuffing, mac n’ cheese, and corn pudding. Then there are more intriguing recipes to learn how to make such as vegetarian spicy sausage, mexican chorizo, Rajma masala, Hawaiian chickpea teriyaki, kale & yam soup, red lentil dal, cheater pad thai, chocolate zucchini muffins, frittatas, Italian recipes, tofu recipes, Mexican recipes, Ethiopian recipes, Thanksgiving recipes, southern recipes, cajun recipes, spreads, and dips. There are plenty of great ideas in this cookbook whether you are looking for traditional comfort food or looking for something more creative and worldly. Everything from appetizers to breakfast to side dishes to the main course to desserts. This is a keeper!

I got on a bit of a vegan kick and this was purchased along with Appetite for Reduction by Isa Chandra Moskowitz. I picked The Happy Herbivore because it had good reviews and because of all of the online buzz about the website. At the price, it seems like a reasonable risk.To put things in perspective, I am fairly accomplished home cook and a big cookbook aficionado. If a cookbook is any good at all, I will read it cover to cover, then obsess over which recipes to try first. But the recipes have to consistently deliver outstanding flavor, or they will not be revisited. Reading this cookbook was not terribly inspiring -- for one thing, the pictures are mediocre at best. But I made three or four recipes, none of which would I make again.There are too many great vegan cookbooks and resources out there to purchase this one. My experience with Appetite for Reduction was the complete opposite -- inspiring and delicious, worth it for the soup chapter alone. If you're looking for a healthful, low-calorie vegan cookbook, try that one. Or another one. Just don't waste your money on this.

This is a low- fat, plant based cookbook. The recipes are simple to prepare with common ingredients and can be used by followers of Dr. John McDougall and those following Dr. Colin Campbell or Dr. Esselstyn. Lindsay avoids high fat foods and all oils. This kind of cooking will lower your cholesterol and your weight. This food is satisfying and delicious. Lindsay practices wizardry with everyday ingredients. I have eaten a low-fat plant based diet for years and can't resist buying vegan cookbooks when they appear but this and Lindsay's other cookbooks are my foundation. If you really want to cook and eat vegan for life this is the place to start.

Mr. Storey quite remarkably does the difficult footwork of explaining what a legally free society must embrace to maintain itself. Through it, he dispatches of some of the the Utopian nonsense that captivates much Libertarian thinking. That is the idea that man can only be truly free in a vacuum of both government and culture. When in fact, the only way the state can remain limited is in a system where the people take care of their own. The common markers of a healthy and free society are embodied through cultural homogeneity (or at least a universal reverence for the western political project), shared values, strong communities, and a Christian sense of human dignity are all absolutes in Rik’s societal framework. It’s an intellectually serious book that anyone who’s seeking a way forward from the growing nihilistic will to power that’s prominent in our political discourse could gain by reading.

Richard did a fabulous job showing the inextricably relationship libertarianism has with western civilization and vice versa. He does not mince words and has no issue identifying the sociobiological relationship between ethnic Europeans and libertarian ideals. This book is a MUST read!

An excellent read for those who doubt the compatibility of libertarian political philosophy with Western civilization, or for those who scoff at the suggestion that Western peoples and cultures are uniquely suited to the creation and maintenance of a libertarian social order. Overall a refreshing perspective rooted in realism concerning ethnicity and culture.

The document opens in Kindle in an unreadably small font. The usual font size controls have no effect. Don't get it here until this problem is fixed.

This is a well thought out and well presented study of he development of Natural Law and the success of Western Civilization.

An honest and good perspective from a man who is doing the work of good. Definitely a must read for those wanting to know the reality of which we are dealing with today.

A truly quirky kind of book. The author attempts to read the entire 2002 encyclopedia in one year,intertwined with vignettes of his life. Frankly it sounds like it wouldn't be interesting at all. but it is. Maybe because I am an info junkie myself,but I think it is the writing. Snarky, sweet, funny, (I had to look him up in Wikipedia to see if he finally had a child, I just had to know) Another reviewer said he thought people liked the book because they liked blogs-wrong. I hate them ,but this guy's writing had me hooked. Going to see what else he has written. Well worth the reading.

I'm only on page 12 and I am laughing so hard I am crying. Just saved almost all the rest of his books to my wishlist. Had this book sitting on the shelf for years, and just now reading it. If you want to get your blood flowing from some great belly laughs, buy this book!

After reading a few of A.J. Jacobs's other books I ordered this one. "The Know-It-All" is much longer than his other works, & like the Encyclopedia Brittanica is very looong. I thought I had a handle on the author's personality from reading his other biographical books, but this one adds new dimensions--the boring, full-of-himself side.The book spans the alphabet from A to Z, full of interesting tidbits about historical figures, etc. but A.J. sprinkles the pages with comings & goings from his own life. Although an interesting read, about half-way thru I wanted it to be OVER. Interestingly the hard cover copy I bought has several typos thruout--curious coming from an editor of Esquire magazine.His sense of humor comes thru the pages as strongly as in his other works, but I didn't enjoy this one as much as "The Year of Living Biblically".

Very entertaining. A humorous account of a professional writer's pursuit of his goal of reading the entire Encyclopedia Britannica, his wife's tolerance of his objective and progress, and of his family's, friend's and co-workers endorsement and skepticism. Author offers both humorous and profound insights as he works through 22 volumes, 33 thousand pages in his attempt to absorb the entire corpus of human knowledge according to the Encyclopedia Britannica. Many laugh-out-loud moments in this book.

This book is not as good as The Year of Living Biblically: One Man's Humble Quest to Follow the Bible as Literally as Possible, but it's still a terrific read once it gets going. The story has a fascinating arrangement - each chapter covers one letter of the alphabet (except XYZ, which are lumped together), and the story is guided by alphabetical subheadings. A section with the title of an artist may lead to a snarky one-liner about the man's fetishes, while a section with the title of a mountain range yields a revealing meditation on a time that Jacobs was lost in that range (and the effect that the incident had on his relationship with his father). These longer musings, which are much more frequent near the end of the alphabet, make the book truly worthwhile, and Jacobs really seems to be baring his soul (as opposed to the difficult first sections, where he is only willing to bare his pop culture fluency and his most unusual trying-too-hard-for-attention personality quirks).The basic story is interesting, as Jacobs embarks on a quest to read the entire Encyclopaedia Brittannica, but the quest is a self-centered one, and it is difficult to read the inconveniences suffered by Jacobs' wife and other family members when the reader knows that even Jacobs doesn't seem convinced that his pursuit has a worthwhile goal. As the book progresses, though, Jacobs matures as a storyteller and presents beautiful studies of intelligence and wisdom, along with honest struggles with infertility and with his larger-than-life father. By the end, this is a truly wonderful book, and I highly recommend it.

i picked up a.j. jacobs' "the year of living biblically" way after most people had read it, and totally loved it. so i decided to go back and read his first bestseller -- the know it all."biblically" was about the author's year of trying to live everything in the bible as literally as possible. seems jacobs likes these year long challenges as writing fodder, because "the know it all" is about his personal challenge of reading the entire encyclopedia britannica in one year.as you can imagine, reading the entire encyclopedia is quite the daunting task. and jacobs attempted to not just skim it, but actually hold onto all that information (hence the subtitle). of course, this wasn't possible.the book is really an alphabetical collection of mini-essays -- some on the actual stuff he was learning in the EB, and some on his life that year, using topics from the EB as jumping-off points.jacobs is witty and narcissistic (in a way that works for a writer). and the book is generally a fun read. but it took me longer to finish than any book i've read in the past few years. seriously, i think i plunked along in it (while reading other books simultaneously) for about three months. crazy. and i think the reason it took me so pickin' long is because, at the end of the day, it's really just a very long collection of witty mini-essays -- like an encyclopedia that's fun to read. without a narrative arc (and, even most non-fiction books have a narrative arc), i just got... restless. i was going to say i got bored, but that wasn't quite accurate. i just really wanted to finish the book.so, fun read. but, ultimately, it wasn't sustainable for me.

This is the most carefully and accurately written travel guide, and thus the most useful, that I have encountered in nearly four decades of traveling. It is also the most sensitive statement of The Gambia and its people I could imagine. I have been visiting the country since the mid-1970s, and was just there in early 2003. I found out that Emms and Barnett are respected wildlife experts who have taken up residence in The Gambia who advise the Gambian government, when it will listen, on matters pertaining to wildlife, ecology, and conservation. They care about The Gambia and its people. What all of this means for travelers is that they have recently visited each restaurant, hotel, and museum (and bar) they write about, driven each road, bartered for each item purchased. For every place I visited, over two months, their advice was on the money. And I would purchase the book even if not traveling, because it gives a wonderfully accurate sense of Gambian history and culture. My hat is off to Emms, Barnett, and the Bradt folks for giving us this book. Don't leave home (for The Gambia) without it.

This is a great book with a huge wealth of illustration crammed in. Beautifully printed and a great reference for an artist or would-be animator who wants inspiration for backgrounds and settings.

Being a big anime and manga fan, getting hold of “Everyday Scenes from a Parallel World” was like being handed a treasure. It is 10 in. square; and though it is in paperback format, this tome is definitely a coffee table book.It was while reviewing this book that I left it on the coffee table, not to test my theory but for convenience. “Everyday Scenes from a Parallel World” is not for reading per se. It should be perused the way we look at paintings in a museum. Every page holds a unique artwork that is worthy of framing. I would have framed some myself, but I just cannot bring myself to tear pages from this book which I have treasured since I received it.There is very little prose. Except for the introduction which was written in both Japanese and English, the pages just have the titles of the illustration. If you are like me who does not read Japanese, don’t worry. There is an English translation right beside the Japanese.To say that I was mesmerized by “Everyday Scenes from a Parallel World” would be an understatement. I have had the book for months now and I still have not finished looking at it. Every time I open a page, though I have seen the artwork before, I would notice something that I did not see before. It feels like an Easter Egg Hunt when it happens.So, yes, the book is still on my coffee table, right in our TV room. When I sit down to watch the six o’clock news, I always open it and look at one drawing. It might only be 60 seconds per day that I give this book attention, but that is enough for me to continue admiring the artists who drew them. It will be a long time that “Everyday Scenes from a Parallel World” will sit at the place of honor where my family meets every night to share and watch what is going on in the world. It is an everyday scene in the parallel world we live in.
