The content of this book is great -- but recommend you get it hardcopy, and not on kindle. Read other reviews for content.It is not formatted well for kindle. Extra spaces after apostrophes, paragraph breaks not formatted....something weird. Try to change the font? The font selections are in Asian characters....can't change the font. When the book was downloading, the image had the Japanese notations. You can change the font size, but not the style, and the style is odd. This was a sloppy and careless "make it digital" attempt.So, this book should NOT be purchased via kindle. I like the content, but the display is so annoying that it is distracting. For free, I'd take it. But not for the full price I paid.

Pressfield brings the best of his intellect, knowledge of wars and warriors and a compact writing style to this book. It engages the reader along the way to think about things in different ways. Also a wonderful insight into some morsels of history.I just pushed the buy button to purchase 4 more copies of the bookTwo to friends with long term military careers who are struggling with the internal corporate politics. Hopefully it will help them understand the differences between their culture and that of the increasingly morally vacuous cultures in too many organizations.One to an extremely effective high school teacher to help him in discussions with students about their career options including the military.One to have as a spare to loanThe book is short, not due to an absence of thought, but rather from the quality of the writing.Camille Paglia recently did an interview with the WSJ (Dec, 2013) in which she noted the absence of military service among Wall Street, big business and political leadership as a potentially deadly threat to our nation.After teaching for a number of years in a leading university's MBA program and decades in business I am convinced that most of our business schools would be far better off sending their faculty off to spend 6 months with the Marines learning about effective, principled and goal oriented leadership. The Marine Gunny with a high school education knows is a far more capable leader and far more capable trainer of leaders than our corporate leadership. The cornerstone of that effectiveness is the Warrior Ethos. No doubt some of Pressfield's disciplined writing skills came from his Marine Corps experience. A great read....... highly recommended.
Parallels are drawn between Spartans of old, Romans, Greeks and even the Samurai of Japan to U.S. Marines and Soldiers. The principle, not simply of armies or those who serve bit the mentality of those special breeds that genuinely live the warrior way of life. This book could be a great read after transitioning out of the military for combat veterans and even current service members. The struggle of reintigrating to a civilian life is difficult and the concept that the ability to endure hardships has simply provided the skills to address these new challenges and battles. Of special interest was the honor of the warrior and his devotion to the "tribe" or team. Great read. I gathered much insight from this book.
This was the most horribly written book I have ever read. I felt like I was reading a 9th graders research paper on right and wrong and they failed to make any valid points or source any work. Each s all paragraph of 2 sentences(which is not a paragraph) were completely different lines of thinking. At first we were reading about a story of Roman Soldiers conversation without any sources or validity that I can find, and then defining what the word ethos means followed bymore stories which have no sourcing and could lack validity. You could say anything happened "In Roman Times" and who would question you? Without providing sources or any more detail like the year this was recorded there is no way to verify without a wild goose chase. On top of this issue you could find nothing to source these stories and comments and the writer could argue you just didn't find them, but I did. Do not buy. Find another book of the reading list if that is why you are looking to purchase this.
The book is a good analysis of warrior cultures across time. With this, the author tries to relate some of the important aspects to modern life, but some of it falls a little flat. Overall an entertaining read if you're into world military history.
