About the Author
Nikolaus Pevsner was Slade Professor of Fine Art and a fellow of St. John's College, Cambridge. In 1959 he became professor of the history of art at Birkbeck College, University of London, and he remained there until his retirement in 1969, when he became emeritus professor.
