Ida, Always, by Caron Levis Charles Santoso

Review

“Inspired by two real-life polar bears, Gus and Ida, who were residents of New York City’s Central Park Zoo, this wonderful story about the loss of a loved one is beautifully told. It’s an example of children’s books at their best. Santoso’s dense, luscious paintings give the couple a solid, reassuring world to live in…. This is a difficult story to tell for both children and adults, but “Ida, Always” does it with simplicity and grace.” (Dan Yaccarino The New York Times Book Review, February 12, 2016)A Bank Street College of Education Best Children’s Book of the Year (5-8 category)“I am in awe of this wise, endearing, tender and beautiful—so very beautiful—book, which is sure to become a classic of children's literature…. The words and the pictures meld perfectly to explore the emotional journey of love and loss, breaking your heart and then beginning to mend it.” (Judith Viorst, author of the bestselling Alexander books and The Tenth Good Thing About Barney)*STARRED REVIEW* "Inspired by two polar bears that lived in New York City’s Central Park Zoo several years ago, Levis (Stuck with the Blooz) takes readers on a reassuring emotional journey that explores friendship, love, and loss.... Levis’s characterization of caring, supportive friends is spot on.... The description of Ida’s passing is brief, poignant, and gentle, as is Gus’s adjustment to life without his best friend. Santoso (I Don’t Like Koala) creates gauzy backgrounds featuring the city skyline and the zoo’s greenery, and his slightly anthropomorphic bears convey a wealth of feeling through their expressive eyes, smiles, and body language." (Publishers Weekly, November 2015, *STARRED REVIEW*)*STARRED REVIEW* "Loosely based on Gus and Ida, the polar bears who lived at the Central Park Zoo until Ida’s death in 2011 and Gus’s death in 2013, this frank yet sensitive work explores loss and affirms the power of friendship.... While the tone is gentle, Levis is honest about the turmoil and anguish of terminal illness.... The quiet, lyrical text is complemented by the soft, evocative visuals.... Santoso’s design is particularly inspired, with good use of the gutter and perspective.... Although Gus experiences real loss upon Ida’s death, the book ends on a hopeful note, emphasizing the strength of the friendship and Gus’s memories of Ida. VERDICT A tender and honest portrayal of coming to terms with death." (School Library Journal, January 2016, *STARRED REVIEW*)*STARRED REVIEW* "In an honest and upfront manner, [Caron Levis] gracefully reflects the complicated emotions of not only dealing with loss afterward, but living with the dying. In Levis's soothing narrative, Ida will always be with Gus, because, as Ida told him,"You don't have to see it to feel it." The polar bears are sweetly and expressively drawn, and the sky, clouds, shadows, sunshine and rain in Australian illustrator Charles Santoso's (I Don't Like Koala) softly luminous digital paintings all beautifully mirror the story's joy and sadness." (Shelf Awareness, February 2016, *STARRED REVIEW*)“Ida, Always…stands out as that exceptional issue book that expands the audience into the realm of being a book everyone should read…. More than any other book on loss, Ida, Always manages to tell a story that is just as good at comforting a child experiencing loss as it is at explaining loss to a child who has yet to experience it. This second quality lifts Ida, Always into being “a book for every child.”” (Kenny Brechner Publishers Weekly ShelfTalker, April 7th, 2016)"This is a picture book about loss and grief, so it is probably not a coincidence that it is pictorially dominated by skies. Santoso paints amazing skies. There's a spectacular view of the sky on almost every page of the story.... The book is very blunt about what's happening: "one day, when her body stopped working, Ida would die." Levis writes about death and the bears' mutual devotion with surprising beauty.... But some of the most affecting passages are hardly poetic at all... the pictures are so simple they're heartbreaking." (Kirkus Reviews, December 2015)"This simple story of bereavement and friendship is made even more affecting by its richly colored, quiet illustrations.... A heartfelt and powerful depiction of loss and recovery." (Booklist, January 2016)"This thoughtful story is a good way to introduce a discussion of death to young children.... The soft gentle illustrations perfectly complement the understated, quiet text. This would be a good addition to library collections on death and dying for children." (School Library Connection, May 2016, Recommended)

One of the best children books dealing with death, and in such a beautiful, graceful way. My 4 year old requested this book every night for several months, and a dozen or so times in the year since. I admit, I had trouble reading it the first time through as I didn't know what the story was about, but as the pages turned, I could sense it coming, feared it coming, and physically had trouble reading (crying, sniffling, short of breath, quivering chin and lips) when we finally turned to the page when it happened. But the auther is so delicate and gentle with the delivery and how the other characters cope with the loss.

THiscwas the perfect book to help my five year old understand his Great Grandfather's illness and death. I love that it isn't religious, but helps children understand that it is their choice what to believe. Explaining the "mixed up feelings" that surround grief, for him, and for those around him. He even said after Grandpa had passed, "will it be on the front page of the paper tomorrow?" So I printed a newspaper article and he delivered it to my husband, and to his Grandmother. It was so touching and really helped him feel like a part of the healing.

This is a heartwarming story based on two actual polar bears in a New York City zoo. It's a love story. When Ada no longer comes to play, her sweet friend doesn't understand. The caring woman who works at the zoo lovingly explains what's happened with Ada.When I read this book to my elementary students, there were tears. It opened up wonderful conversations about grief and sorrow.I highly recommend this beautiful book. The artwork draws the reader into the story. At the end of the book, the author gives a brief account of the two bears she based the story on.I felt it really brought sensitivity and compassion to the hearts ♥️ of the children.

Ida, Always by Caron Levis and illustrated by Charles Santoso is a sweet, two-hankie picture book that depicts how loved one’s imprint in our world and on our hearts remains after they die. It deals with death that acknowledges the sadness and grief and celebrates life and relationships.A pleasure for eye, ear and heart, Ida, Always focuses on sound to capture the loving relationship of two polar bears, the bustling zoo where they live and the vibrant city which surrounds them. (“Keys clicked and shoes clacked … buses groan,; trucks rumble …children laugh.” This encapsulates the theme: even when the people and places we love are out of sight, the sounds that surround us hold the audio track of precious memories.Adoption-attuned Lens Adoptees may find solace in a book like this because it invites them to intentionally search for and preserve good memories about relationships they have lost. Even when they lack actual memories, parents can help them imagine moments that his birth parents “might” have shared with them. Even kids with trauma histories are viscerally connected to their birth parents. They might benefit from finding some positive recollections, (Not to cancel out or invalidate any trauma or the reality of hurtful histories but as the first step to finding a way to heal any damage.)--Gayle H. Swift, "ABC, Adoption & Me"

As others have said, a beautiful book. But what I like best about it is that it really spoke to my granddaughter after the loss of her Papa. Like Ida, he got seriously sick and a cure wasn't possible. And like Ida, there were days when he could play and days when he needed to rest and be alone. And like Ida, he went to sleep and died peacefully. We cry and laugh and reminisce when we read it.

This book is a perfect way to help us process the death of a dear friend with our preschooler, who has a lot of questions. I appreciate that it acknowledges mixed-up range of thoughts and emotions experienced during the process of losing a loved one and after they have died. A great benefit for us and for my practice with children is that the book is not religious. Yet, it gives a way for the child to cope with the loss and feel connected to the loved one. I am so grateful this book was recommended to us.

This book explains dying and death in a way even my 2 year old can understand. I was looking for a picture book to help with those concepts as my dad is dying. This book exceeded my expectations. The pictures are beautiful and expressive and the story is deep, but simple. My son understands that Ida is sick and Gus is sad and sometimes angry. I highly recommend this book. But be ready to be teary.

Great book! I bought this book to use with a student whose dad passed away because of cancer. It attends to aspects of long term illness and would be suitable for talking about long term illness or losing someone you love with a child. It could work for children as young as 1st or 2nd grade and maybe up through junior high if adapted properly.

This book has one page for every Data Scientific topic, each of which could take a book of its own. It is too short even for a review, not speaking about a textbook. Absolutely useless.

I am happy to have my book. The content is clear and rich. However on the delivery of my new book, some of the pages were crinkled.

Good fundamentals to understand how to code and play with tensors and python for Deep Learning

Had high expectations but the book totally ruined them. The book does not covers concepts which you might already know. Finally I had no idea whether this book is intended to teach more of tensorflow concepts or deep learning paradigms. In my opinion it failed to do both. The book starts of well explaining the core concepts of Tensorflow. But as you go into individual chapters for sequential processing or vision, they just shared the code and did a very poor job in explaining the Tensorflow Api. It is equivalent to seeing some code on github and try learning yourself using google.Since I already understand the core concepts like sessions/graphs this book is of no use to me. The worst part is that the code samples are the most basic you could get. For text processing they took Tensorflow.org tutorial and diluted it so much there is hardly anything to learn on text processing side.Essentially this book = basic concepts (which most people already know) + aggregation of github codes for each subject ( which are too basic and you can easily find much much better repositories online). The worst part is even the code samples are buggy. Even the basic linear regression code is wrong and does not optimise unless you change that. In my opinion the text processing code is wrong too, but I'm not too sure of it.

As a practicing software engineer interested in building my ML skills, I thought this was an excellent overview of modern machine learning and introduction to TensorFlow. The authors struck a nice balance between building your intuition for the theory behind different machine learning techniques and guiding you through sample TensorFlow code that implemented them. I appreciated that the chapters were motivated with real world examples, and I liked that some of the examples (e.g. DeepChem) were outside of the canonical machine learning problems you hear about in every other machine learning book / tutorial. In terms of the TensorFlow material, the book essentially starts from scratch by introducing TF primitives, and then walks you through increasingly complex applications from simple regressions to reinforcement learning. The code samples are digestible and well explained, and the accompanying GitHub repo is really helpful for taking a deep dive into the material. Throughout, the authors give helpful tips and tricks for practicing deep learning in the wild. At points I wish the book had gone slightly more in depth (with some of the more complicated material, as well as for things like preprocessing), but I liked that so much material was condensed into a relatively quick read.Highly recommended to anyone looking to level up with TensorFlow.

Overall, this is pretty okay. It's a decent introduction, although it could benefit from a deeper dive and more detail in the "hands-on" stuff.Compared to Learning TensorFlow by Hope, Resheff & Leider, I felt that this had a bit more depth and a bit more clarity (although I would have liked a bit more still).Like others, I found this to be a bit too focused on statistical chemistry, but it didn't really impede the value of the book, and I was able to learn some new things from it.

TensorFlow for Deep Learning by Ramsundar and Zadeh is 230 pages of great machine learning content that should compliment any data science library. If I had to complain, my largest gripe would be the strong bias toward the mathematical details of tensor calculus. Not that math is undesirable, but with only 230 pages to spare I felt that equations were often thrown out without adequate explanation. The introduction also comes on a little strong. The first chapter is named “Machine Learning Eats Computer Science”. Perhaps a better title would be “Deep Learning Hype at Full Throttle”. But let’s be real, deep learning is a subset of computer science – very useful for certain tasks and useless for others. The text would have you believe that deep learning is some new alien technology that is not related to algorithmic approaches at all.But this book has it where it counts. The structure of the chapters is laid out in a very intuitive manner that demonstrates that these authors know exactly what they are talking about and are eager to share the knowledge. First, Tensorflow primitive are introduced, next linear regression is explored, then on to fully connected deep networks. The fun really begins next with hyperparameter optimization, convolutional neural networks, recurrent neural networks, reinforced learning, and finally training. Relevant topics, logistically ordered, and adequately explained. It’s not a perfect book, however. Some of the diagrams and graphs have descriptions that refer to colors, yet all the images printed in the book are black and white. This makes some figures very difficult to interpret. The ending chapter on ethics also shares a lot in common with the hyped-up introduction – for example, dramatic fretting over sentient war terminators and suggesting quitting your job over questionable learning applications is a little much. In truth, governments leveraging technology to suppress freedom should be our concern – and this has been true for all time and all technologies. Enforceable checks and balances of a structured government have always been the best defense, not quitting a job… but I digress.Overall a very worthy addition to a data science library. You’ll probably want to have at least an introductory grasp on the Tensorflow and deep learning before reading this book, but it’s a great next step. Highly recommended.

Excellent book outlining the path of Post Traumatic Growth. The knowledge, from experience and research by Ken and Josh, is a proven way to regain control of your life for anyone suffering from, not only Veterans and First Responders suffering PTSD, but anyone. The PATHH program developed at Boulder Crest Retreat, developed over the past five years, has been proven very effective. It is the only comprehensive guide to PTG and healing. We, as a society, are lucky Ken and Josh have decided to share their's and others experiences with us in this wonderful book.

"Struggle Well" is a breakthrough book that deals honestly with the needs of men and women who have been deeply impacted by war and other traumatic events. Pills, unsolicited and thoughtless advice and ill conceived "treatments" have done little to address the deep needs of warriors and first responders. During my time in service during Vietnam I had many clients who struggled to replace horrible memories with good ones, to build a new reality that didn't deny what they'd been through but they managed to gradually "move on". As I stayed involved over the years I noted that this was getting harder for returning veterans, Something had changed, perhaps the 24/7 nature of war in a combat zone is what's different - certainly deployments are longer and more frequent. Whatever the reason I witnessed countless warriors come back only to be trapped in a diagnosis that typecast them and a VA system that medicated them into severe addictions. What Ken has created at Boulder Crest and what he now lays out in "Struggle Well" is by far the best effort currently underway. The approach isn't new, it builds on deep truths. Suffering sucks, but it can be ennobling. How we respond to trauma of every kind is a choice - our final freedom. This book lays out a practical way how to, quoting Dusty's colorful phrase, "un-f*** yourself". We have to do the work and it can't be done if we have no hope. While reading the opening chapters the scripture from Jeremiah 29:11 - "For I know the plans I have for you" declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." kept running through my head. This is the message we need to hear. I'm grateful that Ken and Josh tell it like it is in their new book. There's no BS between these covers, no therapeutic gobbledygook and no magic. But there is hope and a roadmap that we all can follow.

This paragraph early in the book caught my attention right away:"We’ve learned in working with veterans that their problems have a lot more to do what they are coming home to, rather than what they are coming back from. The military teaches men and women how to be Soldiers, but no one teaches them how to live a meaningful and productive life out of uniform. In truth, no one teaches civilians how to do that either—until now."The authors explore the problem of PTSD in a way that looks at the whole person and their life story, not just a single experience. It's incredibly insightful. Anyone interested in this topic should pick this book up, you will not regret it.

A timely book with a compelling argument for how to recover and thrive after trauma. The authors' have spent years working with military veterans and medical experts and have distilled the best research and the best of their experiences in these pages. In doing so, they have made a real contribution to the conversation on post-traumatic stress, with productive and original recommendations. What Falke and Goldberg have accomplished here, though, deserves a review well beyond military circles. Their insights and methods will strike a chord among all those who have suffered trauma, or know someone who has. And they may just have reminded us all of how to live well and live together whatever our circumstances. Thank you Ken and Josh.

If you are a vet either you know someone who is struggling or you may be struggling yourself. Either way this book will help you heal or help you better understand how to help. We are losing on average 22 vets a day to suicide. Struggling Well’s program will hopefully reduce that number one vet a time.

The program at Boulder Crest Retreat is an excellent example of how all trauma impacted veterans should be cared for. I have visited the retreat, talked with veterans who both receive program assistance and offer program support. The process (and results) of this program is light years ahead of what the VA provides and is worthy of direct federal funding in order to expand and replicate this form of care with dignity and respect to all veterans. This is a hand-up process that addresses the core issues trauma victims face on a daily basis; not a hand-out effort where trauma veterans can become heavily medicated and receive a few monthly hours of standard counseling sessions. Pills and the standard hour of counseling are steps; Boulder Crest is a process. In Struggle Well, Ken and Josh effectively walk the reader through the Boulder Crest process reflecting an in depth understanding of this multi-faceted/multi layered challenge. Why is this read is so compelling? Ken and Josh have become true practitioners in an area where devoted passion and sincere concern partner with effective holistic methods. And more important than the obvious results of the seminars is the follow on care and support provided which is vital to improving veterans lives in a manner where they can enjoy a more productive future (for both the veteran and his/her family). I would also recommend this read for anyone who deals with anxiety or depression or has a family member/loved one dealing with anxiety or depression.

This is a "guide/bible" for those of us living a hell on earth. I have implemented this culture into my life, and I am a better man, learning to struggle well, in lieu of constantly chasing my fleeting soul around.

From Booklist

Gr. 6-12. Published on the fiftieth anniversary of the Supreme Court's ruling to desegregate public schools, this volume collects stories, memoirs, and poems about the history and impact of Brown v. Board of Education. The contributors, well-known writers for young people, were themselves young in 1954, and they speak from different sides of the racial barrier. Some selections, such as Joyce Carol Thomas' poem "Stormy Weather" and Quincy Troupe's challenging essay "St. Louis," speak powerfully about the searing discrimination that blacks have suffered. Others, such as Jean Craighead George's "The Awakening," talk about "white blindness": "I was as slow to see this injustice as a bear awakening from hibernation." The illustrated format, featuring arresting pastel images by James, seems geared to younger readers, but some of the entries are fairly sophisticated. Teachers will need to pull out the selections best suited to their students, but all the passages will bring children up close to the complex realities of segregated society, while showing that the ruling was only the first step on a long, continuing road to progress. Clean book, came with the cover, fast ship.

I am a high school librarian, and I purchased this book for one of my English teachers. She said it worked out well for her lesson.

Well, I have had this book for four years, and it is about time I wrote about it, so that I can share its awesomeness with other readers! Award-winning writer, Joyce Carol Thomas, collected and edited essays and poems written at her request by her fellow authors of literature for young people for this small volume in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the 1954 Supreme Court decision, "Brown vs. Board of Education". Although the Court ruled in favor of the plaintive, Rev. Brown, thus allowing his eight year old daughter, Linda Brown, to attend a "white" elementary school in Topeka, Kansas; and made segregation of races illegal in twenty States, there was a long, long road ahead toward integration and better treatment of African Americans within the U.S. This is a beautiful and powerful book befitting to the occasion of remembering what it is like then and how things were, both the good and the bad, between races, back in 1954, and, while looking back, helps us to examine where we are now, and perhaps reflect on what lies ahead. How must it have been for such a small child such as Linda Brown to both symbolically be at the forefront of desegrazion of schools and, effectively, our society? She must have been very brave, walking alone and unwanted into that all-white school. Physically she was there with the other children of her age, yet effectively she was very, very alone. Her family wanted her to have a good education and get equal treatment. Up to that point, the schools were arranged according to the principle "separate, but equal", yet this was far from the reality of the situation. The black schools were often in appalling disrepair, the school supplies meager, at best; and, when they received "new" textbooks, they were actually getting the tattered and worn books from the white schools, when they bought new books. Linda Brown, You Are Not Alone shows glimpses into the lives of others, and the nascent forces of the changing times, which show that she is not alone in the fight for desegregation and equal treatment. The thirteen essays and poems (including the introduction) run the gamant both in the experiences as well as style. There is humor, poinyantcy , some bitterness, hope, courage and determination. This variety helps keep the reader interested. Two of my favorites were the story, "Wonamona" by Jerry Spinalli, and "Stormy Weather" by the editor, Joyce Carol Thomas. In the former story, Spinelli tells about his wonderful friendship with a neighbor, a same-age black boy whose real name was Reyburn, but who insisted on being called "Wondamona". His friend was a very friendly and gutsy kid, but the young Spinalli was not aware of how special and rare their friendship was, nor did he notice how that Reyburn's mother always had to paint the front door to get rid of the words that appeared there. Eventually Wondamona/Reburn gets his beat-up by an older white kid, and the family moves away. Not before he leaves a final memento of to his best friend, Jerry Spinalli.I was privileged to be at an arts conference in 2004 (QMFA), where I heard Joyce Carol Brown read her very powerful poem, "Stormy Weather", and it still sends shivers up my spine when I read it today. Ms. Brown was a petite lady, very genial and soft-spoken. Yet what power she has when she prays for rain for her ailing mother! I am glad that I bought this book, and that I was there when she spoke. This edition is beautifully done, with high-quality glossy paper and beautiful illustrations by Curtis James. I hope that it becomes available again, and that you enjoy it!

This book is a collection of essays about the Brown decision. It is not the story of Linda Brown that I was hoping for. Current juvinile authors tell of their own experiences during that period. It's interesting.

Therapists in Court: Providing Evidence and Supporting Witnesses (Legal Resources Counsellors & Psychotherapists)

Review

`A recent SAGE Publication called Therapists in Court provides invaluable, step-by-step guidance to mental health practitioners in the UK. Even though different countries use different legal systems, many issues faced in the legal domain are based on the principle of protecting the rights of both parties and balancing often competing roles. Despite its base in the UK legal system, Therpists in Court provides essential advice on many of these issues for all mental health practitioners, regardless of their location′ - New Therapist `So many therapy books contain too much padding with references to other published work that is already familiar. The reader has to work hard to ′extract the gold from the dross′. This title is not one of these. Your review read the whole book through in one sitting because of the clarity of the writing and logical sequence. I wanted to know what to do next. Bearing in mind that this is about legal matters, it may be described as ′un-putdownable′ - Play for Life `[Therapists in Court] spells out very clearly the vastly different worlds of therapy and the courts. Detailed and careful preparation is advised although not offered by the courts to the uninitiated. There are many examples given of typical Initial Statements; Disclosure Documents; and several different Court Reports which may be requested under different circumstances. This is a user-friendly handbook that one can use to get an initial overview of the likely legal scenarios therapists may experience, and which can be used for more detailed study if and when the need arises. Tim Bond and Amanpreet Sandhu provide therapists with a useful reference in which the legal process as it may apply to themselves and/or their clients becomes more easily understood′ - Eisteach ′This book fills an important gap in the literature and will I hope remain in print long term, with appropriate amendments and revisions. It should be read by any therapist whose client is or may be involved in court proceedings, civil or criminal, as witness, plaintiff or defendant: that is, by all therapists of any discipline. It will be essential reading for trainees. I wish it had been around when I was learning my job′ - Dr Jean Harris - Hendriks, Honorary Senior Lecturer and Consultant in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Traumatic Stress Clinic, London `Therapists in Court provides a clear and useful summary of what to do when faced with legal processes and will be extremely helpful both to counsellors called to provide evidence in court and to lawyers who wish to refer their clients for support during the legal process or afterwards´ - Sarah J Head, Client Support Manager, Alexander Harris Solicitors `It is extraordinary that no such work already exists. I predict that Therapists in Court will become not just useful but indispensable to all practitioners, not least because of the accessible and jargon-free language in which the law is conveyed. Ultimately, clients will be the beneficiaries of a better informed profession´ - Marcel Berlins, Barrister, Author of The Law Machine, Media Law Module Leader at City University London, and Guardian Legal Correspondant ′It often happens that lawyers get frustrated trying to find the answer to a point of law in their textbooks. Therapist need have no such worries! When trying to find out how the courts of law may affect them in their work, they will find it all here - in a comprehensive and very readable account of what is involved. Here is all you ever wanted to know about the courts but were afraid to ask!′ - Sheriff Nigel Thomas CBE
