This is a very interesting book however, that is not a new book is, which has left me a bit puzzled trying to figure out why it doesn’t do what I thought it would (or should). "Photography Is Magic" is indeed a wide-based survey of work made in the past decade or so, but it is in many ways much more of an edited source or reference book than an original analytical work. Still worthwhile to peruse.

Great selection of photos, but the author provides scant insight into the individual artists and their work. The writing is dull and laden with jargon. Most people will find the text it unhelpful, unless they thrill to academese.

This is a terrific overview of congemporary photographers doing abstract and semi-abstract work.

I was definitely looking forward to another great Charlotte Cotton Photography book, but was unfortunately terribly disappointed with this purchase. There is minimal text from Cotton, and while the pages are flooded with some trending Contemporary Photographs and Photographers, the book falls short of a good critique on the current state of photography.

This book is wonderful if you enjoy abstract photography.

Charlotte's idea of photographic magic is to throw a bunch of images against the wall, pinterest-style. There is no critical thinking at play, no art history references, no real tangible connections, save image fillers aggregated into an ambiguous monograph. Pass, actually FAIL.

Wonderful book, glad it was still available, I've been having a hard time finding it elsewhere.

This book is an absolute treasure. We are warned as readers we will laugh and cry and we do. But the message that this world belongs to us all is clear.My only criticism is that the format of the book doesn't lend itself to Kindles. I'm going to buy at least one hardback for myself as well. Well done Bloom family, and well done Penguin!

I wish everyone could read this book! It would open your heart. How many hearts do you know that don't need at least a little more opening? All of us have been wounded or maimed, or been a target. Read this. Let this ragged little bird smooth down your own feathers or prove to you that you don't have to look like a movie star to be a Truly Great Human Being...

I love this book and have nothing but praise for this unique read. It is a love story first off with a tale of tragedy and struggle woven into the fabric of the Bloom family’s lives. It’s a story of hope and faith. Once Sam decided she wanted to continue her earth-walk after her accident, she was like a cork in water – she couldn’t be kept down. She is strong and driven by her love of life, family and a bird in pied feathers - they kept her a full participant in life. Sam is a fighter and you can’t help but cheer her on and fall in love with Penguin the magpie as you read their story. Against all odds, Sam is one of life’s winners – as are all the members of her brave loving family. Sam and Penguin are survivors. Angels come in all sizes, shapes, and forms. Penguin certainly qualifies as an avian angel with her loving spirit and wings. This is a truly awesome story of a young family of five (6 including Penguin), that met with tragedy head-on and conquered what was left in its wake.The story is told mostly from Mr. Bloom’s point of view and his captivating beautiful photos throughout the book illustrate his deep love of his subjects.Sam’s frank discussion and advice to spinal injury survivors and their caregivers is inspiring. I was deeply touched by her statement that right after her injury she preferred the company of new friends or strangers who only knew her since her accident but hadn’t know her previously as there was no history to that relationship – no expectations.

Not only did the wonderful pictures and the text tell the story of Penguin, but they also told the story of the entire family and how both they and Penguin worked their way through seemingly insurmountable challenges with grace, courage, love and laughter. The story is told both sensitively and candidly, sharing with the reader both the struggles and the triumphs. I read it in one sitting, something I seldom do, and then read it again. And I've looked at the photographs many times over, as they "tell it all." This is a wonderful book for any adult (and an adult could certainly share the pictures with a child, telling only those parts of the story they think the child might understand and be ready for.) Penguin is a very sensitive and aware creature who brings as much healing to the family as they bring to him. It is "must" reading for anyone who has suffered severe injuries or who works with those who have, as well as for those who love reading about animals who are extremely "tuned in" to the humans around them. I can't recommend it highly enough.

I was thrilled to receive this book in the mail today. I just finished reading it and am in tears but also filled with joy and awe at the beautiful journey and inspirational story it tells. The photography is phenomenal and powerful!This is a true story about courage, hope, and never giving up - no matter how bad things get! Direct and honest, this is the story of a cruel accident, resilience, and the love and strength which helped a family deal with crisis. 'On a wing and a prayer', and with incredible photos, you, too, will fall in love with this beautiful family.

Let me first start by stating that I am a bird lover - but this book was far beyond that. I was extremely moved by this story of love, family, compassion and perseverance. The story itself intrigued me but after receiving it and reading it I bought 4 more for family and friends. The photos are amazing and the story will move you to tears - but they will be tears of love, happiness and hope!

A beautiful story of how we grieve during times of loss and how the love of family and a quirky little bird has the power to bring joy and purpose back into your life.

He is the total boy any girl should want in her life. He goes above and beyond and its so dang cute!!Lane was also a pleasure to read. Most female leads are really annoying and make you wanna smack them but that wasnt the case with her. She makes mistakes just like anyone but her reactions to them were real and i loved that about her.Every page i read i felt i was there experiencing it first hand instead of reading it. That is how i know the writing is good, when i lift my head up from my book to have to adjust to realizing its not real and im still in my own house.Everything about this book was a pure treasure and i am so glad i picked it up. I had to order a hardcopy just to put on my shelf. The emotions will suck you in as well as just the characters themselves. And the blossoming romance is one that is swoon worthy and will leave a big grin on your face even hours after finishing the last page.

Off Center is a sweet contemporary about Lane an inspiring journalist that's thrown into a sports writer position that she knows nothing about. She knows exactly what she wants and plans to make it happen. She is organized, driven and quirky. All is going according to plan until she meets Mackey and her turns everything she thought she wanted upside down. This is such a sweet story. my only issue is towards the end we are thrown a huge curve ball, and not given anytime to adjust to this information. I feel like this big event was just brushed over, which was disappointing. I don't want to spoil anything but it left me with unanswered questions, which I hate. Overall Off Center is a sweet story about a girl going after her dreams. I really enjoyed it.

Another quick read from the Varsity Girlfriends series. I thought it was interesting that this book was set around the same time as the first book so events that happened in the first book were happening during this story. I wasn't really expecting that. I thought this would be set after the first book and you would hear about the couple that got together at the end of the first one. It was still interesting how it was written.Honestly this is definitely a basketball story and I am not to into sports so I was skimming paragraphs sometimes when they were talking about basketball. I loved the characters though and that you were given a different point of view about some of the characters so you would see them in a different but better light. I hope Anderson gets his own story eventually so you can see him in a different light and hope that he doesn't stay a jerk. I liked Mackey as a person/character. I kinda thought this story went a little fast though because Lane and Mackey seemed to not know each other in the beginning and Lane was supposed to end up with another guy. Then her article for the school paper brought her and Mackey closer together. This was also kind of a sad story so things were happening to more characters than just the main character. I thought it was kinda interesting though how Mackey didn't mention the article about Jillie or anything to do with her even though it was clearly something happening in Lane's life and was affecting her.I enjoyed this book though and was able to read it in about a day. I'm curious to see what happens in the rest of the series and who ends up with who. I'm glad I was able to get an early copy of this for my honest review.

Although it was mostly lighthearted, there were some serious matters discussed, which brought out some real emotions, but it was an overall happy read.I would recommend this book and the series in general. I can't wait for the next book.

This is one of those stories you don't want to miss. I was hooked from the very beginning and I couldn't tear my eyes away till the very end. She thought she was on track for the plans she had in mind. However, life doesn't always go according to plan and she had to learn that. This was a cute story and I definitely look forward to reading more books by this author.I received an arc and i am voluntarily leaving a review.

I cannot recommend TTMIK enough for those studying Korean! Their website is fantastic, they have tons of free resources as well as published books. Everything is easy to understand and really helps you learn. I personally took a introductory Korean class and then am continuing self-study and find TTMIK extremely beneficial. TTMIK even has an app (at least for Android) where you can access all lesson PDF's and MP3 offline on your phone. I listen to lessons whenever I have downtime at work, or anywhere! The workbook is really helpful because it has different exercises for listening, matching, dictation, etc. The dictation portion is really beneficial for learning! I have since purchased all the workbooks and will continue with all that TTMIK has to offer. Great resource by itself for those studying Koreans or an additional resource to people taking classes or brushing up!

Very good workbook. The explanations are clear and I have learned more about Hangul through this. I have ordered the level 1 textbook as well in this series because you can only get to a certain point with just the workbook as I knew would happen. Very good illustrations and it is organized the best I have seen in a Korean learning workbook. Definitely for beginners as there is an answer key in the very back so you can always go back and check your work.

After completing a lifetime of almost a century, with every minute spent in the service of faith, Bediuzzaman Said Nursi departed from this world on the morning of March 23, 1960, with complete honor, dignity and victory, leaving behind him the Risale-i Nur Collection that would illuminate this and the forthcoming centuries and a love that would be handed over from generation to generation until eternity.

I couldn't care less about how Indian market works, really. It's annoying that when you are learning some basic concepts and suddenly a section about Indian markets interrupts your thoughts. Immediately returned.

Dry subject, but a very thorough book that teaches you everything you need to know about Derivatives.

This is a textbook so the material is very dry. Somewhat easy to read but can put you to sleep. Homework problems are good. I would not recommend it unless you need it for class.

I started not knowing a "put" from a "call," but I needed to know a fair bit about how financial engineers (coming from a family of PEs, I'm still not used to that term) use math. This has been the introduction I wanted - not the advanced stuff, but enough to help me understand that material.Methodical pacing leads the reader gradually through the basics, from just what a derivative is on through the brief story of how futures markets work - in short, they abstract buying and selling into buying and selling the right to buy and sell. I tend towards the concrete, so many of these transactions seemed a bit airy to me. Oh, I can follow the reasoning well enough, but I just never saw where the satisfaction of the thing solid and completed comes in. As it turns out, it doesn't. Once you've really got that in the pit of your stomach, then Hull's presentation follows smoothly.He gradually derives models of increasing complexity. Diligent reader with a little calculus or a lot of trust will follow along easily. Later chapters draw on more advanced concepts in probabilistic modeling, but present the reader with only the aspects needed for the discussion at hand - a mercy, considering the size of the specialized vocabulary involved in the rest of the explanation.This book ends when the foundation has been built. More advanced needs must be met with other sources - not a problem with this text, just a matter of its chosen scope. I needed that foundation, however, so I recommend this book to anyone with reasonaable math skills and a need to know the material.-- wiredweird, reviewing the 6th edition

Although John Hull's book "Options, futures, and other derivatives" is considered by many to be the bible for understanding derivatives , I think this book took the same shortcut that many books on this topic have taken. That is, they've focused on options where the underlying asset are stocks, exclusively. I suppose Hull's reason was to simplify an already complex topic. Yet, as a recent graduate with a degree in economics, I was hoping to find more information on options with commodities future contracts as the underlying asset. The book is fairly easy to follow. the dialogue is interesting without being boring. However, if your interested in a beginning book about derivatives, look somewhere else. If your interested in a book about derivatives that offers strategies, some useful math, and bases most of the discussion around stocks, this book might just be for you.

One cannot fully understand the quantitative aspects of risk management without having this book in your reference library. It's thorough, easy to read and has all the necessary mathematics for reproduce the risk measures, pricing and valuation for most exchange traded securities out there. I fails only in the introduction to cover the requisite history of risk management but that's not so important for the work. I particuarly like the Merton model descriptions for pricing corporate bonds, the options pricing methods because it makes binomial pricing for options really easy to program yourself. This is one book you need in your library and also one you must read too.

I've been interested in writing ebooks for quite some time. I've read read several books on the subject, but still had questions. Since Dummies books have always served me well in the past, I thought to myself, "Dare I even LOOK to see if there was an Ebooks For Dummies book out there!" I did. And, there was.Since the look inside feature will show you the contents, first pages, & index, I won't restate them here. But, there were several things in here that I found helpful. First, Ali Luke spent some time introducing us to three Kindle success stories and their blogs: Amanda Hocking, John Locke, & J A Konrath. (Incidentally, if you are even remotely on the fence on whether to go traditional versus ebook self publishing, DO spend time on Joe's blog. Just saying.)Next, Ali takes us through the ebook creation process from idea to written word to ebook covers including suggestions for getting things done when cash is scare: Open Office, Google Docs, Paint.NET, Wordpress.com. Each part of the process is explained step-by-step with plenty of pictures and screen shots for us visual learners. Although I admit to having a preference for the Kindle Direct Publishing Platform, she does a very thorough job of explaining other publishing platforms: MOBI, ePUB, pdf).Since I work in Word, I found the discussion on how to use Calibre (also free) to convert my Word HTML files to MOBI & ePUB files.Many books on ebooks tell you that "anyone can do it and get rich". Unlike many of these, Ali reminds us that you still need a well written, quality product for a target audience with a good cover (even if you ARE doing yourself.) And, if you've messed up your formatting or your book isn't selling, she discusses those problems too.All in all, a thorough book that imparts a lot of usable information without being dry. If I were to pick a companion volume, I would download Tom Corson-Knowles' The Complete Kindle Publishing Book : The Ultimate Guide to Writing, Publishing, & Marketing Ebooks.

This was the second book, and may be the last, that I purchased in order to write and publish an ebook. My first book was Jason Matthews's book: How to Make, Market and Sell Ebooks All for Free. That book got me going, but this book by Luke did the best job of telling me how.The book is well organized even to the point of providing Contents at a Glance in addition to a Table of Contents. The introduction explains how the book is organized, and there is an index. This is a reference book.Good illustrations are provided, and the procedures are also good.But, the book isn't perfect. Here are areas where improvements could be made:- Cost budgeting.- Time consumption for promotion.- Copyrights.- Text could have been presented in outline format in addition to font changes.- Illustrations could be provided, perhaps one or two, showing sample roadmaps of the steps to take in a recommended sequence, e.g. write book > prepare cover > get website > convert format > submit to Amazon ...etc. Preparing such a roadmap will probably be the first step after I complete writing the book in Word. I will use the bubble chart approach showing branches for parallel actions.

Why is it that every time I have a need for a bit of knowledge in an area foreign to me, I simply turn around and order the appropriate book from Amazon...and in this case, the Dummies series! There must be a Dummy book for every human endeavor...and this was no exception. Great book, as always, and a joy to read and learn! Highly recommended--both publishers and distributors.

The checklists are soooo helpful for leaders and congregations. Rev. Claudia Osborn was a physician when she was hit by a car while riding her bike one night. This resulted in a traumatic brain injury.This book describes her journey afterwards, her treatment, her deficits, her futile hopes for the future and the grief when she realized she couldn't achieve them. She talks about her unwavering resolve to make herself able to function, by writing herself notes, recording directions on her tape recorder and filling notebooks with lists of how to go about her day.This book really made me understand how a tbi can affect a person in so many ways we cannot begin to see. It was fascinating and fun, thorough and intelligent, and I feel I and many others will benefit from reading this book, specifically for the understanding that it provides and the patience that it teaches. These lessons are good for us non-brain-injured people, too - especially the ones on acceptance and patience.

The last chapter "Head Injury Primer" is worth buying the book for. It lists and explains various symptoms. I have multiple traumatic brain injuries and there are few Doctors and Health Resource Workers who understand TBI. I buy these books and hand them out. Dr Claudia Osborn ... a Doctor at the time of her brain injuries ... tells the story of how she was able to learn about her brain injuries; what she could do to help herself; understand her limitations and rejoice in her strides. Personally, this book has been a saving grace for me. I can't articulate what is happening with my brain injuries, so I give them a book to read. Unfortunately, few will read a book .......... but, I am persistent in talking about this Invisible Disability ........... I teach them whether they like it or not. There is also a video that you can buy of a lecture that Dr Claudia Osborn did. For those who need to see to comprehend and retain, the video is good.

The fact that Dr. Osborn was able to write a memoir of her own head injury and rehabilitation is in itself inspiring, but the true gift to the reader is her ability to blend clinical objectivity that informs and educates with the emotional rollercoaster of her tragedy and rehabilitation. I would highly recommend this book for anyone in the TBI community (patients, families, friends, caregivers) as she pulls few punches in chronicling her struggles and, despite her sobering new reality, offers an example of hope at a meaningful and rewarding life for the patient willing to let go of his or her old self and embrace a new one.

This story tells the truth about brain injury. As a mentor for TBI and Stroke survivors, I am so glan that Dr. Osborn leaves the reader with what really happens to The brain injured. The truth is that every survivor is different but no one recovers completely. They become a different person then they were and Dr. Osborn's story is told beautifully. Unlike the more famous book, " My Stroke of Insight," Dr. Osborn tells the truth. In "My Stroke of Insight" the author leaves the impression that if you work hard you can recover. All survivors can recover to a degree but not many recover without some disability. Claudia Osborn has hit a home run with "Over My Head."

Dr. Osborn's experience has so much in common with mine, and watching her fellow survivors gave me more insights into my own condition. Usually I don't like knowing that there are others like me, but in this particular situation it's comforting to know that certain disturbing things are actually somewhat typical. Somehow she twisted this problem until it looks like something that can be dealt with--which is really more effective than the despair that is so easy to feel when thinking about my injury.

Not your usual wry-laughter or it-all-comes-out-fine-after-serious-injury book. There are several first-person books, some written by neurology clinicians, on experiencing their own serious brain injury and recovery. However, if you're looking for something that really communicates the experience of cognitive scrambling after head injury as well as how it all looks to the family/loved ones, yet gives you some hope for the new-normal future, this is it. The author was a clinical professor of medicine before her TBI and retains a fair bit of a clinician's perspective on herself (doubtless with some editorial help) , even while acknowledging and demonstrating the losses she has sustained and lives with. Fascinating book, and an unexpectedly good read.
