This is a primer for those seeking a more enlightened life. This is not a complex book with lots of categories and advice. It's wildly simple, but that's where you can get wild. It's simplicity is its beauty. How complex it gets is you-driven.It's pretty much roughly 140 exercises or inspirations (pages 11 to 145). Each entry is simple and ethereal, and you get a blank page next to it to write your thoughts.You will be tested to explore your thoughts on forgiveness and positive thinking. You will ask yourself questions as to whether I am a bee or I am a garden. This is not written in paragraphs and chapters.But the stuff that scientists teach us about success usually boils down to simple shifts in attitude. This book gets you started on testing those new attitudes. It also can help experienced thinkers remember--remember what we forget in the day-to-day of life. Just as quotes are the output of the biggest names in success, the inspirations in this book put fuel in our ship, and the exercise they each present to us allows us to make our own quotes (or our own story, as co-author Amy would put it).Warning: You might not like this book if ethereal thinking stuns you. And I mean that in the classic sense of a deer dart. There are pages that start with I Am Effervescent, I am a Bee or I am a Garden indeed.And if that kind of stuff makes you uncomfortable, then all the more reason to add it to your life. Or not.I was not precisely thrilled with the idea of this being marketed as a book so much as a workbook. Some of the inspirational pages are only a few lines. It's a good workbook, but it could be better. Why? It poses the peril that it might give you permission to just forgive yourself or shift your thinking in "positive" or "affirming" ways that are not really requiring you to do the real work. Personal growth is not a positive affirmation.Why three stars? I didn't like the sheer lacking mass of the work, and I felt it could reduce personal growth to a simple affirmation. At times, this appeared antithetical to doing the sometimes complex work to "be" what "I am" -- as a matter of experience, process and learning.On the other hand, this is not rocket science.What gets us to the moon isn't always physics.I don't think this book will appeal to someone who wants a deep read by some great big person, replete with stories on childhood tragedy and inventions that made billions.So I think this book is something that would be a treasure to someone who likes coloring, sketching and books with exercises in them. I have taken a page per day, few days or week. I have really enjoyed taking myself where this book leads me. I guess for me then, it's better than OK. 3.25 Stars.

My father died of AIDS in the fall of 2000. About a year and a half before that, when he was first getting sick, he began going to a meditation group in a beautiful yoga studio with serene hardwood floors and a ceiling filled with skylights in the Duboce Triangle neighborhood of San Francisco. I went with him about a half dozen times, my first introduction to mindfulness and meditation. My dad would fall asleep every time, and I would get bored and complain about my aching legs. Little did I know then that practicing meditation and mindfulness would be the guiding force of my existence for the next two decades.Reading Bruce and Amy's book brought me back to those early days, and many days since. It was a timely and much welcomed reminder that despite all of the struggles and doubts and worries and stresses we face each day, we are complete and perfect just as we are––if we are open to seeing ourselves in that way. In other words, we get to choose who we are––and who we are is made up of countless and nuanced actions, thoughts, and behaviors. Choices: we are powerful if we choose to be powerful; we are necessary if we choose to be necessary, we are magnificent if we choose to be magnificent. And, we are full of possibilities.It was this last idea––possibility––that stuck with me most upon finishing the book. On every page, the theme of possibility shone through, inviting me to be open, to be accepting, to explore and discover the wonders of all the things that could be, if and when I am awake to the possibility of them being. As I jotted down notes on every page, I realized how much the theme of possibility permeated my deeply held values––empathy, vulnerability, equanimity, inclusion, connection––so much so that a thought occurred to me: possibility, itself, is a value. This simple yet profound revelation has immediately been infused into my worldview.Reading Bruce and Amy's book has opened me up to new possibilities of how to be in the world. Moving forward, I see the book acting as an affirmation, a trusted resource, an inspiration, and a guide to remind me of what’s possible. For all that, I’m grateful.

Every page prompts deep reflection and investigation into what it means to be human.The affirmations & meditations in this book have the power to replace the false programming that keeps us from being who we truly are.Not only do we tell ourselves falsehoods like "I am unworthy," but we accept what others tells us and how they label us. "She is too sensitive," was one I heard a lot. It took years to replace other people's judgments about it and realize that being sensitive is a gift. You can get similar realizations by reading this book and reflecting on its' truths. I strongly believe that part of the hero's journey is removing the obstacles inside ourselves. It's what we're called to do. And this book can help.What is blocking you? You might just find out in this mighty, little book. But, it won't work unless you do. Interior work is rewarding and challenging. You'll want to approach this book with an open mind and an open heart.
