as a first effort I expect the artwork to be a bit inconsistent, and it is. but many of the images are very well drawn, and very sexy, so I'm quite happy with the overall quality of the work. I will most likely buy the second volume at some point, as I am very pleased.I will say, however, that my weapon of choice is brush-pens, and the paper stock cannot hold up to them well without bleeding through. this has forced me to pick and choose very carefully which image on either side of the page I wish to color. it would be better for pen-users like myself if the paper stock were thicker, or the images weren't printed on both sides of the page. I'm sure either of those options would increase the price, but inexpensive as it is to begin with, I would gladly fork over a couple extra bucks for something suitable for use with wet media.

Pictures look fun to color.

I bought as a gift for my husband as he loves coloring and we're long distance so I thought it would be funny. He laughed and loved the item. Pictures are all unique and fun to color.

I love this coloring book. The girls are sexy and all my guy friends love when I finish coloring one. My husband does too!

The backgrounds are very distracting but it is much better that the other option out there in this category.

this was bought to help pass time. it was relaxing and fun. { great if your stuck in the hospital for any length of time }. it is a little risque...not for kids at all. the art work was decent.....but they should of put more pictures in it. I went through it in two days

My sons first solo reading book. I loved it because it was more about knowing how to sound out words using the rules of phonics and a lot less of sight words and names. Most of the beginning level readers seem to be packed with sight words and proper nouns. I'm much more interested in my son practicing what he's learned about the sounds letters and blends make than how many words he can memorize and regurgitate. Great book!

I purchased these books for a 6 year old/1st grade budding reader. Prior to getting this book I had already purchased 6 of this Pete the Cat: I can read series from Walmart (Pete the Cat: Sir Pete the Brave; Sir Pete the Cat: Tip Top tree house; Pete the Cat: Pete's Big Lunch; Pete the Cat: Pete's train trip; Pete the Cat: and the Surprise Teacher; Pete the Cat: Too cool for school) I wanted more so I got them from Amazon because Walmart never had any that I did not already have. The books were $3.78 at Walmart so the price on Amazon was comparable. I love the series! The words are in big print. The art work is great and the pictures assist with the helping the child figure out the words and context. Also uses the most common sight words. Most important, each book has some simple but effective message about sharing, being a good friend, overcoming your fears, or being yourself. This book is a Guided Reading Level E

My kids love Pete the Cat and the set of books for beginning readers is great. The sentences are short and vocabulary are at the perfect level for the beginning reader. We have almost all the books as well as some of the more non beginner books as well. highly recommended!

The book itself is a bit flimsy for my taste, but my son loves it.

I ordered this book "Pete at the Beach" on Feb 21st. 2019, and received it today, on the Feb 23rd.Front book showed a creased, like the book has been opened several time.1st page has a handwriting with "Jacob" name in pencil.Don't want to read thru the book, since I don't know how many people have been touched and used it, I turned to last page to check ... hair and dusty stuffs were there.

My 5 year old is a smart cookie, but we had a hard time motivating her to start using her sight words to read. Enter Pete the Cat, and my daughter is in LOVE! She loves to read ME the stories now, and even the words she has to sound out are not too tough. The best part is the stories are actually fun!

My 3 year old loves Pete the cat books. This is a sweet little book about Pete the cat and his family going to the beach. It has easy words perfect for beginner readers and is just the right length, Not too short but not too long. We enjoyed it and look forward to reading about more of Pete's adventures.

My little girl loves Pete! She was reading 98% of words in these books before she even started Kindergarten. Now I get her the books because she enjoys reading them and because they have cute stories and repetitive sight words that help kids familiarize themselves with the words and gain confidence.

The storyline is interesting and well written by the ladies of Celia Kyle, Marina Maddix. This book ended in a cliffhanger and left me waiting for the next book but lucky I have the next one already.

Loved the story. This couple are great together and they do love each other. Trina suffering the way she did and to end up with another mate. Max is great sexy hunky and great for Trina

I absolutely loved this book and the new direction the authors are going. The story was so exciting, I read it all in one sitting. Loved the hero and heroine! This has to be one of my favorite writing duos. This whole series is great. I recommend starting with the first book since everything will be explained better.

About the Author

Patricia McConnell, Ph.D., CAAB is an Ethologist and Certified Applied Animal Behaviorist who has consulted with cat and dog lovers for over twenty years. She combines a thorough understanding of the science of behavior with years of practical, applied experience. Her nationally syndicated radio show, Calling All Pets, played in over 110 cities for fourteen years and her television show Petline played on Animal Planet for two-and-a-half years. She is the behavior columnist for The Bark Magazine (the "New Yorker" of Dog Magazines) and is Adjunct Associate Professor in Zoology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, teaching "the Biology and Philosophy of Human/Animal Relationships." Dr. McConnell is a much sought after speaker and seminar presenter, speaking to training organizations, veterinary conferences, academic meetings and animal shelters around the world about dog and cat behavior, and on science-based and humane solutions to serious behavioral problems. This is a very good book, not a great book. We just brought a puppy home and had this book ready from the time we picked him out. We hadn't had a dog in a very long time and were pretty rusty in the training department of things. Our pup is an Australian Shepherd/Collie mix and is very "mouthy". He started out by constantly biting everything he came in contact with; our hands, feet, legs, clothing, shoes, furniture, the rugs...everything. In the book the authors say to yelp loudly to get the pup to stop. In our case, this did nothing but excite our puppy to get more happy & exuberant in his biting. But we did give this a long trial period, without any success. We also tried their suggestion of getting up and leaving the room (a consequences thing). This didn't work either because the puppy then proceeded to tear the room apart in our absence! In talking about this with our vet, she instead suggested interrupting the behavior with a very mild choke hold (she demonstrated 2 such holds for us) to send the pup a strong no-bite message. She also recommended a small spray bottle of water to give him a quick squirt when the biting got out of hand and needed to be quickly interrupted. The biting WAS out of hand at this point; my husband had scratches and bloody gouges all over his forearms and hands. Yet otherwise our puppy was easygoing, happy, and very sociable when he wasn't biting and had no other behavioral problems. He slept in a crate all night long and got along well with everybody...UNTIL he started nipping and then hard play biting. We were glad to get this new info from our vet and it helped immensely. Outside of this huge issue (for us anyway), the book has some excellent things in it. I especially like the idea of using training as a way of spending time, and bonding, with a pet. Consistent ways of calling the dog, and playing with the dog, by all family members is another great suggestion to avoid puppy confusion when training. This book is a good starter book for many issues with a puppy but is not an end-all resource, in my opinion.

I had to accept the fact that I was the one who need training! If I wanted a good dog I had to be a decent trainer. It's been awhile since I've had to train puppy. I wish our other dog could have just trained the puppy-but since that wasn't going to happen I had to find a good, easily understood book. (Besides, I hadn't done a stellar job training our other dogs.) The paperbacks in pet stores don't cover all the things responsible puppy parents need to know. This book was recommended to me by my daughter. She has been a dog handler and trainer for many years for the military and now for Homeland Security...so she knows her stuff! This book is easy to follow. Chapters and specific training issues and methods are logically presented. You don't have to read the whole thing cover-to-cover before you get a puppy or immediately after you get one. I just started with the simple stuff like getting puppy to know its name, how to potty train (still working on that one,) and teaching it how to chew on appropriate things!You won't be overwhelmed by this book and it really has made puppy training easier this time!

This book changed my life-with-pup immediately and my understanding of dog training forever. It is the best-written concise manual to basic training I've ever encountered. I recommend it to anyone, even an experienced owner, who has a dog and wants to understand him better.It is divided into a set of progressive exercises and reviews, one major lesson per week. The authors briefly explain in the simplest, clearest manner possible both how to bring about a behavior---e.g., the sit or down or get-away-from-that-bottle-of-pills-that-just-spilled-onto-the-floor-and-will-kill-you-if-you-ingest-them---and why that particular method works. They explain precisely---step-by-step-- how to conduct the little exercise that will create the new behavior. The week is spent in short, repeated drills and practice of former lessons.I felt confident, once again at ease with myself and pup, by the end of page one.The basic message of the book? IT'S NOT MAGIC: dogs act from genetic, canine-specific behavioral patterns, just as human beings act from human-specific patterns. Learn those behavioral canine patterns and adapt your training to them. Then training will be easy, even fun for both owner and pup. It will be simple.I was ready for simple. I've owned rat terriers all my life. I like their zip and feistiness and sharp features. I love their spirit and admire their sharp minds. I have taken all my dogs through their basic training without instruction or classes, and I've had few problems, none that did not resolve themselves pretty quickly. And I'd just had fourteen wonderful years with the gentlest ratty I've ever known.So when The New Guy arrived, he was a mild surprise. I'd forgotten the all-teeth, all-chewing, all-running stage. The bounce. Nor was the New Guy was not the gentlest rat terrier I'd known. But we got along. He house trained quickly, learned the sit and the come and followed through on both about half the time. Not bad for a three-month-old. But soon, he began the "jump-on-her-and-lick-her-face" and the "mouth and snap at her hands and legs." One look at those little bared teeth and I called around for help, while I awaited an obedience class. Every trainer spoke of Alpha Animals and the occasional need kick or slap in order not "spoil" the dog. I'm a lifetime teacher and I'd never seen the equivalents of those recommendations work in my classrooms, but I was willing to try anything because daily The New Guy grew more defiant. I ordered recommended books and read them, marking key passages. I did things that ran against my instincts and tried some I simply could not pull off (the heel, for instance). Then finally, late on a day filled with frustration and punctuated by tiny canine teeth marks on my arm, I went to Amazon, seeking something simpler, maybe a set of progressive lessons. Something practical and simple. I wanted easy solutions, for I knew from past experience, they existed.That's how I discovered "The Puppy Primer." It is exactly what it says----a primer, a set of basic training exercises that will take a dog through his first year and teach him to become a good companion and family member, while retaining his individuality. The author is an animal behaviorist who is an active researcher, and she is also an experienced hand-on trainer, and that combination separates her approach from a lot of well-known advice givers. She understands the mind of the creature at the end of the leash and her training techniques are designed to meet the needs of the canine mind. The training exercises work exactly the way she says they will work. Exactly. They are so simple, I marvel still. They use small treats as rewards because eating is the greatest pleasure pups know and hence best reward. Couple it with lavish praise, and the pup will gradually transfer the pleasure of the treat to the praise and chest and belly rubs and link all with the behavior being taught---sit, stay, come, or other. In time, the pup comes to see the behavior itself as pleasurable and seek out that pleasure.My pup and I are not to the heel command yet, but I think that lesson illustrates the superiority of this book's method of training. The other books I've read start this exercise with the dog on leash. The authors do not start with leash. They begin with a set of preliminary exercises that reward the dog for following closely the feet of trainer. Ingenious and simple. Then they move to the leash, recommend chest "halter" at first because it is less likely to harm the head or neck. Then they build on the already-present skills taught in the preliminary exercises to teach the dog to heel. Such an approach just makes sense.As a teacher and student I learned two important things: one will never (possibly can never) learn from someone who he believes does not like him and a teacher cannot teach a student whose motivations and being she does not understand. We cannot beat or frighten or harry any student into learning. This understanding lies at the heart of "The Puppy Primer and accounts for its successful teaching.In fact, were I teaching pedagogy in an education school, I would assign this book as required reading. It would teach the importance of addressing human needs, the value of exercises that prepare students for mastering a skill, the value of rewards besides grades, and the great pleasure of teaching and learning that can bind student and teacher.This little book is witty, clear, engaging, and right. I will give it to the dog owners I know. And I shall always be grateful to it for helping me reach my pup before bad behaviors had become confirmed. Usually the best of anything is simple. There are plenty of beginner's books out there explaining basic principles of lighting for photography (and that information is also rehashed in the first few chapters here). There are also plenty of books on using light creatively. What this book does is give very specific tips on a very specific type of photography. For me the heart of the book is the chapter on lighting for different face shapes and skin tones. This information is the building blocks every photographer should know yet is seldom brought up.However, this very same section also betrays the weakness of the book-- lack of variety in its examples. Every portrait is set up with the same formula-- a mottled muslin backdrop with a fill light, key light, two kickers, a hair light, and a background light-- which leads to page after page of examples that essentially look like the same old fashioned, even cliched, photograph. It would be a great benefit to follow up with a more modern portrait that demonstrates the same technique.Overall a good technique book, but not at all inspiring.

The cover might lead you to believe this book only covers studio lighting, but that is not the case. It is a very comprehensive book about sculpting with all kinds of light -- studio strobes, camera flashes, and ambient light.The photos are gorgeous and clearly demonstrate the different lighting scenarios. There is plenty of information about studio portrait photography (open-loop lighting, butterfly lighting, rembrant lighting, etc...). You will learn how to flatter different facial structures with studio lighting patterns.The author also discusses lighting different skin tones, shaping sunlight with scrims, gobos, etc..., and balancing artificial light and ambient light for portraits.Highly recommended for those still learning the language of light.

This is a great book for someone interested in mastering the basics of portrait lighting. I would highly recommend it for anyone who wants to improve their lighting skills and take their photography to the next level!

Handy book for lighting concepts. The author does a nice job of showing examples of multiple lighting scenarios with the same subject. This is very helpful for people who learn by seeing rather than by just written instructions. I own tons of photography books. This is one of the more helpful ones.

Well written, and very informative. I'm just getting into portrait photography and I'm sure I'll reference this book often. What else needs to be said... if you're reading this you're looking for info on how to light portraits, and this is exactly what you're looking for.

The content of this book is great for photographers that wish to learn TRADITIONAL lighting techniques for portraiture. The text and imagery clearly explain how to achieve the various lighting setups designed for one or two subjects USING ONLY studio strobes and reflectors plus a few using light painting. Also there is an unfair comparison in the book where the author took a couple of exposures with unflattering results using ON-CAMERA FLASH and compared them to a beautifully lit portrait where studio strobes were used, which led me to believe that she does not condone the use of hot shoe flashes.

This book is packed with great information about how to use lighting equipment to bring out the look and charm of your subjects.

A textbook and a guide for both those learning to advance their knowledge of lighting techniques, and for those just being introduced to the subject matter. The book has an excellent number of images and diagrams that help fully explain the author's written descriptions of subjects such as incident light, reflective light, ambient light, design tools, portrait basics, and the nuances of multiple subjects and lighting for specific facial shapes. About the Author

Richard Delacy has taught at several universities in Australia and the U.S. and currently teaches Hindi/Urdu at Harvard University. He completed a BA with Honors at the University of Melbourne in History and an MA in History from Monash University, with a focus on modern South Asian history and twentieth-century Hindi/Urdu language and its literature. He studied Hindi formally for three years as a part of his BA and then spent a year in Delhi studying Hindi language and literature at the Kendriya Hindi Sansthan (Central Hindi Institute). He also taught Hindi at two universities in Melbourne for nearly six years before embarking on further studies in South Asian Languages and Literatures at the University of Chicago. These cards are high quality, durable, accurate (confirmed by my native Hindi-speaking boyfriend) and very helpful. The CD is indispensable for learning to pronounce words, and the sentences are SO helpful for getting a basic handle on Hindi grammar and syntax. These cards were more fun to use and taught me more applicable Hindi than the workbook I bought. The example sentences are largely sentences you will actually use in regular conversations, and for me at least they helped me understand basic Hindi grammar much better than workbook activities. These will be the best tool in your language learning toolkit!

I like it to get my 6 yr old to a good start. She finds these cards interesting and is eager to learn the meaning to each word! They are still off with meaning on some words because it's hard to translate colloquial hindi with the exact English sentence, but it's ok. It's not a problem since I speak fluently. They've only given 4 alternate ways to say /use the words, when many more combinations are possible.Since few hindi learning books are available in the US, this is great even though its geared towards adults. Of course I'm not a hindi professor or a hindi newsreader so its fun getting back to the basics. I try to make it fun for my daughter by reading her hindi children stories daily so she understands the thought and text formation intuitively. These flash help only if there is a fluent hindi speaker/reader helping the student. I bought the other hindi books by this author as well.

This is, probably, one of the best products on the market for learning Hindi vocabulary. For me it works much better than electronic word lists, such as BYKI, etc. The typographic quality is excellent, and it includes the card index in both sequential and Hindi alphabetic order.To use this product fully a person has to know the Devanagari script and the basics of Hindi grammar, which is required to understand the related expressions and sentences demonstrating the word use.The card words are selected thoughtfully and will help serious language learners. Adjectives, and often verbs, are given in pairs of opposites, which is very helpful. And many related words, such as some synonyms, are very useful as well, although many synonyms, such as 3 for "sky" and 4 for "but" can be confusing because there is no way to figure out which ones are more common since it's not clear in which order they are listed. There are some repetitions and redundancies, but, in general, one can expect to learn 3 times more words than given in the card index.Some expressions are very useful as well, but not as much as the words themselves. The main sentence on the back of each card is simple, but very common in every day use. They also demonstrate the basic use of Hindi tenses. More variety for similar words, such as days of the week, would be beneficial. Most idioms and proverbs have little relevance for a beginner.Also, most verb cards contain compound verbs, which are extremely common in Hindi, and which meanings in many cases don't differ from those of single verbs. Again, it can be confusing for the beginner to select what to learn and use. And to appreciate this information adequate knowledge of grammar is required.And, the last, the set certainly emphasises the verb learning, which, along with with the verbal and sentence structure, determines the mastery any language.So, overall, the set is very useful, for both beginner and intermediate Hindi learners. And I am really looking forward to see Volume II.

This is a nice improvement over the old edition, which had errors in the text. But the gloss coating makes the cards slippery and hard to shuffle. The big drawback to these cards is that the vocabulary seems to have been chosen at random. You won’t learn 400 words that you need to read a newspaper or understand Bollywood films. But they’re still good for practicing reading and writing.

I really like these cards. They are filled with useful "extended" vocab and grammar that builds on the base word. I'm a beginner with the language and found it useful. However, I do get somewhat bored simply going through card after card, and it's difficult to carry them all with only one ring to hold so many cards.

I am so glad that the cards mainly use the Hindi script, I get really frustrated trying to learn and being coddled with English approximations for Hindi sounds.There are so many words here, and each word card has related words to learn. I've just finished learning all the main words, but now I can go back and learn all the associated words.Many of the cards also have idioms and native phrases that are great to learn.Every word is put into an example sentence.I have never seen flashcards so complete with everything you could want.I really wish they would come out with a Hindi Vol. 2 now!

This book gets everything right — the deep, complex relationships and emotions; the complicated racial and political landscape of 1969 Malaysia; and especially main character Melati’s struggles with OCD. It’s also a tense, suspenseful page turner on top of all that! I tried to stop reading it at midnight and couldn’t stop until I finished it all in one night. Though it was about an event in history I didn’t know much about, it resonated with me as strongly as books about events during more familiar conflicts like World War II. There are many YA and adult novels set during the world wars in Europe, and while I love many of those, it’s nice to read about another time and part of the world, too. I loved seeing a glimpse of Malaysian culture, and really I just adore the main character Melati and want everything good for her! Seriously, there is so much heart in this book, and I loved it so much!

This is a fascinating book, both from the main character's OCD, which she attributes to having a Djinn inside her, and a look at a week of horrible violence in 1969 Malaysia. Melita is 16 years old and just wants to have a good time at the movies with her best friend, Saf. Instead, she is caught up in horrific violence.She spends much of the book trying to be reunited with her mother, a nurse, and expending much energy trying to hide her disorder. She, a Muslim, accepts that Djinns exist, as it's part of her religious beliefs. That is much easier for her to accept than that it is a mental illness - for in 1969 in Malaysia, she would not have received good mental health care and medication that would help her to deal with her condition. She would have been labeled crazy and shunned or institutionalized. So she tries to keep her inner demon at bay with endless counting, always in multiples of 3. She is taken in by a kindly Chinese Christian woman and kept safe for much of the book, but she must leave the nest to find her mother. It's just been the two of them since her father, a police officer, was killed on the job. That was when her OCD came.This is a thoughtful read in the current political climate as well, where anyone "other" is suspect. To us European Americans, the difference between people of Chinese heritage and Malaysian heritage isn't necessarily obvious. Cultural and religious differences, sure, but being able to identify someone from their appearance is more difficult unless you're looking at a woman in a hijab and a woman wearing a cross (or other religious symbol). The violence between the two cultures seems as sensible as building a big old wall to keep out people who are essentially just like us and who only want a better life for their children.

What a compelling, page-turning historical! This book contains all my favorite things I look for in a YA historical: gut-wrenching tragedy, a window into a different place and time (especially here, with one I haven't seen before in YA), and compelling characters I want to stay with. Not only does this book provide a glimpse into a terrifying time in Maylasia's history, but it will also resonate with teens today who want to bring people together in spite of differences. A must-read!

This is a beautiful book about a girl struggling with OCD in Malaysia in 1969. She taps and counts because her own mind is so chaotic, full of intrusive thoughts about her mother's (possible) death. When violence breaks out around her, the chaos becomes all consuming. But through empathy, friendship, and bravery, Melati navigates a new uncertain world to find her mom and help those she can along the way. This is a fantastic historical fiction and I would highly recommend this for middle school and high school shelves. Alkaf is a writer to watch.

I came here to review this book as soon as I finished because it's exceptional and the world deserves to know it.As the author mentions in the content warning note, the subject matter is heavy, but the book still finds ways to show the beauty of humanity alongside the extreme ugliness of violence and hatred and gives glimmers of hope and joy and love amongst the wreckage and despairThis story is beautifully written. The writing is captivating, the characters are vividly real (and so many of them endearing), and the plot kept me on the edge of my seat, even in the "quieter" moments.As an American who sadly does not possess much knowledge of Malaysia, I was previously unaware of the race riots that this book takes place during. Though this story is fiction, it brings to light an important piece of history that shouldn't be forgotten (and in many ways feels all too applicable to things happening around the world today).I loved this book. It made me tear up with grief, relief, and joy. It's beautifully done. If you are in the right place mentally and emotionally, don't wait another second. Read this book. I truly believe everyone can benefit from it.

Full review @ templetongate.net - A near perfect debut novel. Alkaf gave warnings for graphic violence, death, racism, OCD, and anxiety triggers, and while portions were horrific, it wasn't as graphic as I expected. I've read much more graphic material, or maybe it's because I never suffered from that type of trauma and saw it from a detached viewpoint. Highly recommended, and I look forward to further stories from her.

Outstanding book, highly recommended.I knew nothing about the strife between the Malay and Chinese in 1969 Malaysia. Melati is a compelling character and narrator, I couldn’t put this book down.I can’t wait for Hanna Alkaf’s next book.Spoiler AlertThis would be a five star book if it didn’t feel quite so rushed and neatly tied up at the end. These are my only quibbles.

Wonderful debut! Set against an incredible backdrop of revolt and rampage in 1960’s Malaysia , this story is so thoughtfully written about how anxiety truly plays trick on the brain. I couldn’t put it down!
