I have been in the field of software development and architecture for quite a while now. While I value the rigor and comprehensive nature of academic texts on specific topics in this field, I frequently find them to be overly abstract to easily apply to a particular problem domain. This text provides an excellent, pragmatic, and easy to apply introduction to both the Prolog semantic model and language structure, as well as its differences from traditional procedural or assignment-based programming languages and metaphors. I also have "The Art of Prolog" and several other books on the topic, but this is the book that I find myself repeatedly using as a reference on how to most clearly and easily represent and solve a particular problem using this extremely flexible and expressive language. Kudos to the authors for an excellent presentation on the subject!

This is an excellent reference and great examples in a time that it is difficult to find anything to help with Prolog.Great for the person with no experience in Prolog that has inherited an application written in Prolog.

Extremely solid introduction to Prolog. Does not leave you wondering what is going onas I have seen MANY other books on Prolog do. Wish I had read this as my first Prolog book.

One of the most underrated schools of thought in AI and NLP is the the school which was lead by Michael Covington and Donald Nute at University of Georgia. It is the opinion of this reviewer that this school produced, in its papers, thesis of grad students, and books, the most impressive results in discourse representation theory produced in the western hemisphere, and are comparable with those produced anywhere else in the world.This book--a product of that school--is such an unexpected little gem of a prolog book. I wish I would have stumbled across it much earlier in my quest for prolog mastery, because it would have saved me at least 18 months of struggling to learn prolog tools and techniques--techniques which were not only scattered among dozens of books, but were not nearly as clearly described.One area which this book covers which virtually no other prolog book covers is nondefault reasoning. Really a remarkable discussion. Unfortunately, I think that the techniques of nondefault reasoning which are covered in this book have been superceeded by newer techniques, such as probabilistic horn abduction and Baysian methods. But just because these techniques are of historical interest doesn't mean they are of no interest, and the treatment they get here is clear, honest, and more complete than anywhere else I've looked.

This book has been an excellent material for me to develop my Logic Programming skills. That is because it provides not only theory of Prolog programming but also very useful artificial intelligence applications and expert system shells even with uncertainty. Another useful feature I liked much is; the book makes comparisons (where needed) between how to do the same thing in Prolog and in a conventional programming language, Pascal.

In this book, Zuckert quotes and endorses Ronald Hamowy's "conjectural" definition of the pursuit of happiness in the Declaration of Independence, ignoring the actual May 1776 congressional definition of happiness ("internal peace, VIRTUE, and good order" -- written by John Adams and appearing in the resolution that established de facto independence). Zuckert finds it hard to believe that Burlamaqui stated that governments exist to secure natural rights, but BURLAMAQUI STATED EXACTLY THAT, with natural rights understood in terms of the pursuit of happiness, which is the grounding concept (mentioned in the first paragraph) of his "Principles of Natural and Politic Law." This willful blindness allows Zuckert to argue that Locke is the source of the ideas of the Declaration, while not engaging with the differing views of natural right that appear in Hutcheson and Burlamaqui, both of whom were well-known and well-respected in the era of the American Revolution. In other words, while the book's exposition of Lockean thought is well-written and accessible, the foundation of Zuckert's association of Locke with the Declaration of Independence is rotten.

Yet again, Michael Zuckert has produced a forceful, challenging, and overly fascinating work of scholarship. His previous work, "Natural Rights and the New Republicanism," in many ways a "prequel" to this volume, was a historical and not to mention philosophical landmark. This work picks up right where he left off. Part I of the work consists of an in depth analysis of the Declaration of Independence. This interpretration bristles with new insight. Unlike many past scholars, Zuckert makes an overt effort to place the Declaration in context. He does this by examining other sources of information, e.g. Thomas Jefferson's "Notes on Virginia" for instance. The end result, I must say, is brilliant. Contrary to modern conceptions, he demonstrates what the Declaration was really meant to say, and, at the same time, how philosophically sophisticated it really was. In Part II, Zuckert endeavors to prove that the United States was indeed founded as the natural rights republic, in a modern, dynamic, forward looking philosophical climate. To begin with, he picks apart the thesis that the American Revolution was merely an extension of the Glorious Revolution undertaken by the Whig ruling class in the late 1680s. This however, is nothing new, especially if one has already read his account of the Glorious Revolution and natural rights philosophy in his previous work. Nevertheless, he shows conclusively the incompatibility between the two Revolutions, primarily, but not wholly, through a comparison of the Declaration of Independence and the English "Bill of Rights." Moving on, Chapters 5 and 6 address the issue of Puritanism and its legacy in early America. Many scholars have proposed that the American Revolution was merely an extension of ideals held by the early Calvinist settlers of the 17th century. It is this thesis, however, that Zuckert completely demolishes. He conducts and in depth analysis of Puritan ideology, as well as its sources. Of particular interest is discussion of Martin Luther's concept of the "Two Kingdoms," and its influence in American thought. To make a long story short, he demonstrates how dramatically Locke's ideas clash with those of the early Puritans. This contention is driven home clearly by an examination of important political/relgious thinkers in 18th centiry New England, Elisha Williams and Jonathan Mayhew in particular. Finally, in Chapter 7 finds Zuckert further pushing his case for the natural rights republic. He takes on the so-called "classical republican" or "civic humanist" thesis expounded by such scholars as J.G.A. Pocock and Gordon Wood, deftly making mincemeat of them. Pressing on, he examines Thomas Jefferson's evolving political philosophy to reveal the truly radical, natural rightist foundations of American republicanism. Although the book is by and large solid, I do have several misgivings about it. First and foremost, Zuckert's Jefferson scholarship is highy suspect, as can be devined through use of Merill Peterson's biography, as the small, unscholarly Library of America collection of Jefferson's writings. I was very surprised that he did not cite Dumas Malone's definitive 6 volume biography "Jefferson and His Time," or Julian Boyd's definitive collection of Jefferson's papers. Also, Zuckert's refutation of the Puritan "Continuity Thesis," strikes me as a bit odd, as it does not prove anything at all concerning the colonies outside of New England, none of which have any Puritan heritage whatsoever. Despite these shortcomings, the work as a whole is brilliant. This volume, as well as his previous offering, is an absolute must for anyone interested in the relevant disciplines.

This book is an absolute must not only for loyal followers of a natural rights theory as basis of the US constitution. Every scholar who wants to research the foundations of American constitutionalism in depth should have this book in the personal library. It his here that he will find pure Lockeanism and is here that Zuckert puts forward his case of Lockean natural rights and social contract theory as ideological basis for the founders in such a concise way that it is difficult to argue against his case. Of course this is what avid Zuckert readers are used to. This book, however, in referring to Jefferson as a natural rights thinker argues the natural rights theory with one of the most convincing witnesses you can find in American history: Thomas Jefferson. Zuckert depicts the Declaration of Independence and American political thought from an interesting perspective, Jefferson's viewpoint. He succeeds in disputing the main opposing theories to the natural rights theory such as the exemplary role of classical Greece and Rome, the continuity theory based on Puritan thought and Bailyn's point that Locke was only one among others influential on American political thought, to name just a few. I did note, however, a certain tendency to neglect historical facts especially as far as the influence of the English common law and Whiggish thought on the framers is concerned. Finally, that Zuckert did not examine the Constitution itself as closely as the Declaration of Independence is not only excusable. It serves a good purpose: to underline the importance of the Declaration of Independence as an outflow of quintessential American thought, thus a document America should be proud of.

For the first-time visitor, it is a must-read and will enhance your holiday greatly. The author writes with style, wit and charm and has captured the very essence of Barbados from its people to its places the island leaps into life on the page and will make you want to board the next flight out. I have been coming to the island for more years than I care to admit and thought I knew it all but undiscovered hidden gems abound throughout the chapters and Julian writes quite beautifully. I’d had the book on my kindle for some time and overheard a pool-side conversation raving about it. Overall, this is a pretty good book. However, I bought the Kindle version, and that was a mistake. The tables are all messed up and unreadable. They also are all over the page, and they seem to jam up the book, so you can't turn the pages.From reading the text, it is a great book, but it should not be sold as a Kindle if the Kindle reader can't display the material.

This is a wonderful text and written by a girl geek in plain English. Whooot Whooot. Very clear pics and several web sources to visit for more info are included. I subscribe to MAKE magazine and pre-ordered the print (not kindle) version when I saw that it would soon be available. Didn't disappoint me. Love it Love it Love it. It's an easy read. If you know almost nothing of electronics you can figure out what she's saying (I'm an engineer...but you don't have to be one)... and with very little investment you too can become a "maker" -- if you want to see what's out there, visit a Maker Faire -- they are held in Michigan (Ann Arbor, Detroit), the West Coast, Atlanta...all over. And check out instructables online too -- you'll find many examples of embedded electronics in clothing. This book is probably the best "How-To" I've ever read. Get it, and you won't be disappointed. I promise.

I’ve read all of the books from the “Left Behind” and “Left Behind Kids” series, and this is really the only one that I would consider to be quite pointless. It’s not that there isn’t anything useful in it, and it is kind of interesting to see How Rayford and Nicolae were brought up, but it’s usually rather boring and pointless. What makes the “Left Behind” series so interesting and successful is that they play out supernatural events from the Bible that really will be happening one day. The problem with “The Rising” is that it takes place before these events start. There is virtually nothing in this book that’s prophesized in scripture, and almost no supernatural events other than some demonic items that I would almost classify as witchcraft. There were many times that I would’ve stopped reading if it wasn’t part of the Left Behind series and written by Christian authors. Some of it is also in the category of science fiction, mainly that Nicolae is said to have 2 biological fathers. I also really did not like what happens to his mother. Of all the books in these series, this one is not the most frustrating or tragic (I would consider that one to be “Armageddon”), but it’s definitely the most boring and pointless. It’s unlikely that I’ll ever be reading this again, at least not much of it.

All i can say is, Wow! This book had me on the edge of my seat, it had me scared sometimes and it even made me feel sad for some of the characters in it. Let me tell you that the young antichrist is one mean little monster and that kid is more than wise enough to outsmart, mock or eliminate anyone in his little evil path. A YouTube streamer by the name Ray mossholder from Reach More Now inspired me to get this book and i am so happy to own it. Highly recommended. 5 stars.

Excellent writing. There are moments of shear terror at the thought that this shall come to pass....sure, names may be different, these things will come to pass in some manner. You feel you are there, watching all of this play out...a part of this book, in the battle ground. This book showed how some churches teach about what is in the Bible, but fail to teach that we are all sinners. Great book! Read it!!!!

I have read this book now 3 times. Twice in hard cover before I was no longer able to read that type of print. Does this say I like the story. If you have read the Left Behind series of books and want to know more about the main characters, this is a must read. Nicolae was born bad and remains that way even when thrown in the burning lake. You can read about His mother and a bit towards the end, if you have not already guessed, you will learn of who his father is also. You will learn of Rayford Steels upbringing and how he met his wife Irene. This gives good coverage of what is to come. Enjoy. I will be reading this again, once I have read the entire series.

I have to admit, I got around to the "Left Behind" series a bit late and on a whim. I found that if you consider the context of the saga, consider the fact that LaHaye and Jenkins aren't really another Clancy and Cussler like some reviewers say because the tech isn't up to those two, and anyway these aren't "thrillers" per se and science and suspense isn't what the whole thing's about, I found the main "Left Behind" series to be satisfying. You just have to lose the post-adolescent view that if it's about God and Jesus it can't be cool. I'm of the right generation and demographic to have turned out to be a real secular humanist with that particular "brat ethos" as ideological foundation, but somehow I never could buy into that. But this "prequel" trilogy strikes me as overkill, and this first story isn't so much like Clancy and Cussler as it is a dash of "Rosemary's Baby", a dash of David Seltzer's "Omen" series, with an overlay of Jeffrey Archer's "Kane & Abel". And when the woman who will be Nicolae Carpathia's mother discusses the etymology of the name "Lucifer" with one of the "shills" of Satanism, it lost me a bit. My own amateur command of that discipline always had me thinking it meant "bringer of light", an irony given that one of Satan's "occupational" titles has always been "Prince Of Darkness". When I was a kid, my first exposure to the name was a cat in the movie "Cinderella". But this trilogy wasn't really necessary--they should have just gone straight on from "Glorious Appearing" to "Kingdom Come" rather than doubling back to do what amounts to putting in a foundation to an already-built structure.

Hands-down, thus prequel novel is among my top three books ever read. Now, do not be deterred by any negative reviews, as (often with intellegent reads), most who negatively view novels do not understand. This is a book about two boys at it's core; Rayford Steele and Nicolae Carpathia, two main characters from the astounding "Left Behind" series that this novel prequels.Reading the novel from a Christian view, and with a mind relatable to the atheistic views as well, this could be an easily misunderstood work, but I assure you, if you read under the guidance of the spirit, you will find a simply masterful work. The book begins founding the story early in both characters lives (Rayford at nine and Nicolae several years before his birth), and smoothly convinces you to care for every character, and I often found myself astounded, shocked, saddened, angry, and outright overjoyed. All in all, if you are looking in the right places for a good work, focused on God so insidiously and masterfully, just as are His works in reality. An A+ effort, and It is with practically held breath due to a phenominal ending that I will surely be purchasing the next novel as quickly as possible.

Could not keep my interest. I read all of the Left Behind series, this book was more like a review. It did not have the energy that I found so endearing in Tim LaHaye's other books..

I purchased this book after it was recommended by a librarian. This is an absolutely amazing book! It's fun to read and even more fun when read with movements and noises added. I love they was able to keep both my 18-month-old and seven-year-old engaged while reading. I didn't even think that was possible! This book would be an excellent addition to any home library and a fantastic book to gift to a teacher. We love this book.

This little story is of a little old lady who walks down the road and starts to get followed by a pair of shoes, then a pair of pants..etc...until an entire outfit of clothing is following her and culminates with a giant jack o lantern that in the end does scare her a bit, but she uses her smarts and figures out a way for the head and outfit to be happy scaring, while being useful. Cute story, but will get old fast.

This is a great book. Great for ages 2 all the way up. It’s always hard buying a book without holding it and reading it for yourself but this is a great book!! They also interact with the book while you read. I have kids 3,5,6, and 8. They loved reading it

I am an early childhood educator so I have read numerous children's books over the years. My three year old grandson absolutely loves this book. He enjoys joining in with reading the repetitive phrases. What a wonderful, interactive book for the fall season. I consider this a five star book for sure!

I was read this book throughout my childhood around Halloween and when my kid's second Halloween rolled around I decided we needed a copy for our home. Just as cute as I remember it, but two years old may be a little young for this book. She still listens to me read it, but I still think it's a bit wordy and advanced for her age. The carved pumpkin head gives it that appearance, and the fact that it's a scary, tense, story, adds to that impression, but more than Halloween, this is an AUTUMN book. It is perfect for those days when the sun sets early and there's a little hint of coming frost in the air - as long as your young reader isn't easily scared! While the idea of being followed around by clothes is mildly amusing to me, as an adult, it'll be your call for your kid, whether or not he/she is likely to enjoy a little scare. The ending, good for a laugh, takes the sting out of the scary lead-up, if knowing that helps you decide.The text is very good. This is a perfect book for full page and two-page spreads overflowing with detail. For that type of imagery, see Halloween Night instead. The illustrations are my only complaint, however. This is a really good, slightly scary story for young and beginning readers who will probably prefer having a comforting adult do the reading - it is four solid stars good, it's just not five wow stars great.- AnnaLovesBooks

This was a great book that invited partication from kids. I volunteered to be a mystery reader at my granddaughters second grade class the week before Halloween. Sounded great when I volunteered, but then I started to get really nervous. By trade I teach college students— what did I know about second graders? So I called my sister who taught second graders for nearly 40 years. This was the book she recommended, and it was perfect. All the kids participated and we had great laughs and a good time. Recommend this book, particularly around Halloween.

My daughter loves Halloween and naturally she loves this book. Her preschool teacher recommended it to us as it was the book of the month. I like the little old lady’s confidence. It’s great to teach that to our young girls whenever we can.

The large amount of errors makes it hard to trust what I read, and I end up wasting a lot of valuable study time fact checking with other sources.I actually think the textbook does a good job at explaining concepts and the example problems are very thorough and clear, however, it is hard to take a 6th edition textbook seriously that has so many errors.Upon initially reading the reviews for this textbook, I thought people were exaggerating about the amount of errors, but I have found dozens of errors and typos. What is most concerning is the highlighted important equations throughout each chapter very often have typos - very serious typos that change the meaning of the equations completely.I would recommend this textbook if the errors weren't so serious.. but they are. And for such a steep price? So I don't recommend it. Maybe the next edition will be better - you know what they say, the 7th try is always the best (...right?)

This is a bad textbook and the authors should feel bad for creating it. Beyond their truly ineffective format and incoherent text, they seem to have skipped the proof-reading phase. A genuine shame, considering this is the 6th edition. Reflecting on the concept of a stats textbook that is this bad after 6 tries, it certainly raises the question - how terrible was rev 1 of this coil of dog excrement?I have a bachelor's in mechanical engineering, a PE license, and a successful career built in discipline work and project management. I decided to pick up a master's, and this is a required text for my stats course. I have a 4.0 currently and I'm 30% through the program. Given that I've slogged through roughly 50 different textbooks at the college level, I don't consider myself the absolute authority on the matter - but I do think I can tell good from bad.Tables are labeled incorrectly- single sided confidence intervals are conflated with double sided.- heading values for z are repeated instead of incrementedSample problems regularly have sign errors and arithmetic errors.There is no cohesive problem solving strategy outlined in the text... examples provided will not resonate with the reader, nor will the attempt at narration (which is incomprehensible).I figure that the bimodal distribution of the reviews on the text are related to how many academics have praised it for the pure math approach that it seems to aspire to. I have friends with math PhD's who would probably appreciate the obtuse nature of this. For the rest of us, i.e. the intended audience, this is hot garbage. We cannot see past the mistakes, and cannot penetrate the dense, but terse language used.

The amount of time I have wasted trying to figure out why I cannot get the same answer as shown in the back of the book, only to later find out I had the write answer and the book was wrong, forces me to give this book only 1 star. The author has added a few practice problems, and changed some of the numbers in the problems, which forces students to buy new books. Unfortunately, it seems like one out of every 8 problems or so has the wrong answer in the back. Many of them are just the answers from the 5th edition, which they forgot to change when they changed the numbers in the problem. Others are just pathetic typos like 2/3 + 6/3 = 7/3 (problem 5-1, part i). If you are going to rip students off, at least take the time to make your book better, not worse.Also, far too often the example and practice problems refer to previous problems in other sections. This forces the student to shuffle between many pages trying to find the problem. I can't stand this. I do not recommend this book. If you are a student forced to use this book, if you swear your answer is correct and the book is wrong, it's probably because the book is wrong, FYI.

You might have read numerous comments regarding a long list of errors and typos in this revision of the book. Well - they're mostly true. I didn't have much choice and had to buy this book because it was specified as the official textbook by my instructor for the Applied Statistics for Engineering course.There are some nice things about this book. For example, as an engineer, I enjoyed the fact that all the example problems were from real world engineering and scientific applications. Also, I felt like the book in general was well-paced and at the completion of each major sub-topic you get a chance to solve some practice problems. On the other hand, I stumbled upon several practice problems where in order to solve the problem you really needed to know the concepts from following chapters which was a bit confusing.In summary, considering the sheer amount of technical, typographic and grammatical errors and the relatively high price I feel obliged to rate this book at two stars.

If I could give this book ZERO stars, I would. Not only are the explanations and derivations bordering on useless but it is also bursting at the seams with errors and poor sentence structure that makes it difficult to understand what the author is trying to convey. I've learned more from searching for explanations online and a $10 book from a used book store. I don't expect any book to be perfect but the companion site for this book has a 2+ page long list of errors in the book. At this point I'm only using this book for the homework problems and as a reference for equations. In six years of Undergrad and Grad school, I've never encountered a worse book.

If the book is for a University course in the US, don't buy it!!! The book comes with different problem sets for each chapter! The book says that it is the 6th edition, but it is International version of the 6th edition.
