Buy this book!Hillary Chute has written the best single volume overview of contemporary comic art in America today. Period. There is nothing even approaching it and it will certainly be the one to beat for any serious writer going forward. Thank you, Ms. Chute.An academic who can write lively, readable prose? I thought that breed was extinct. The design and production values of this book are also outstanding! Kudos to William Ruoto. Every page is gloss stock and the reproductions all look wonderful. This book is so heavy that you can use it to beat any non-comics fan into submission.Oh, you might quibble with some of her judgements. As a graphic designer I'm not sure this one holds up: the logo for the band Black Flag is "...one of the most important logos in history..." I don't think it even rates in the top 100 'most important' logos of all time. But I admire her enthusiasm and scholarship.

American comics studies scholars have, throughout the past few decades, written much to try and legitimize their chosen field of research. Through the use of historical details and close readings of textual sources, they have made a significant case for the respectability of comics and should be applauded for their efforts. And Chute's book is no different.Her question, why comics? (both a question and an overworked tension), is neatly discussed in chapters discussing comics through eleven thematic/stylistic/content registers. What sets this book apart is the close working relationships with comics producers that she has gained throughout her career in comics studies and provide the material with quotes and an insider's view other studies are (somewhat) lacking. There are some quotes readers will only find in this text, I imagine (or may also be found in her _Outside the Box_?). Some chapters are essential for her close readings, as well: Why Sex?, Why Fans?, Why Girls?, for example; while others are less so: Why Disaster?, Why Superheroes, Why War? are trips down memory lane for readers with a background in the field. All in all, this book feels like an update to Wolk's _Reading Comics_, Beaty's _Comics versus Art_, and (in a way) Pizzino's _Arresting Developments_.Chute has the credibility and the rhetorical skills to produce a text of this kind, and it is very much worth reading, especially if this is the first book you have read on the subject....if that is the case, bump the score to five stars. But one hopes that this will be the final word on this theme. Comics studies would be better served by moving to more productive areas of scholarship (which Chute is no stranger to, either).

Hillary Chute seeks to convince lay-readers on the literary virtues of comics, graphic novels, et al., but attempts to do so with over 450 pages of exacting, pedantic prose.It didn't take long for this reader to become exasperated and bored with such a mess. And by the way, I am someone who read a LOT of comic books in his youth, unlike Ms. Chute who confessed in an interview that she hardly ever read them while while growing up. In fact, I still have many of my Silver Age super-hero mags, as well as copies of several noted underground comix released in the late sixties and early seventies.

This is a good book, but it's a very dense book. It's a sweeping story about Empire Falls, a rural blue-collar New England town, and the people who inhabit it.Miles Roby is the central character, living his depressing middle-age life flipping burgers at the local diner, inexorably tethered to Empire Falls in spite of himself. Surrounding Miles are a whole cast of quintessential small-town characters, including his high school daughter, Tick; his soon-to-be-ex-wife, Janine and his abrasive father, Max.Russo digs deep into each of the characters, fleshing them out with carefully crafted prose and realistic dialogue. Although everyone in this close-knit community ostensibly knows each other quite well, there are secrets that, once revealed, could change everything. This is the case for Miles, whose own late mother remains a mystery and a source of deep-seated heartache.Empire Falls is the kind of book that reminds you of the truth that each individual harbors his or her own private pain and yearning, and that these internal motivations can be confounding even to close loved ones.There's certainly a lot of depth here and I appreciate that. I usually love character-driven novels most of all. But this one is bordering on too dense and too detailed for my liking, often requiring me to force myself to power through it.This is clearly a universally loved book, so I don't want to deter anyone from reading it. It's ultimately satisfying and edifying, but there's a lot of detail to slog through along the way.

Richard Russo's books are rich in characterizations, nuances of place, sympathy for flawed human beings, humor and finally, acceptance of the reality of life and yes, even optimism. What more could one ask? Growing up in Upstate New York where many of his books, though not Empire Falls, are set, I relate to the struggles of people in small industrial towns in a largely post-industrial age, and the acceptance - even love - of their people for their flawed home towns. You will laugh out loud, maybe even cry, and certainly care about the people you meet in Empire Falls. Read it!

This novel won the Pulitzer Prize in 2002, which is somewhat surprising. Not that it isn't a perfectly pleasant and entertaining read, it just doesn't seem to be of a stature to win a major literary prize. It must have been a particularly weak year.The story revolves around the economically depressed, inland Maine town of Empire Falls and the various characters residing there. Our main character is Miles Roby, a college graduate who was sucked back into the dying town, despite being raised and pushed to do better. Miles is in the midst of an unpleasant divorce and struggles to raise his teenage daughter while managing the town's diner for the leading citizen of the town, in hopes that he will inherit upon her death (as he has been promised). Full of clichés and stereotypes, the story works nevertheless as a study on human nature, from numerous perspectives.Being a resident of economically depressed South Arkansas, I can relate to many of the characters and the economic status of Empire Falls. Our landscape is dotted with many Empire Falls, previously prosperous communities, whose driving economic forces have disappeared, leaving the towns to slowly wither away, leaving little or no opportunity for the youth, without abandoning their heritage or foundations.As stated before, this is a perfectly pleasant read that begins strong before hitting a lull midway through. The final third of the book, picks up pace however, with several major plot twists and engaging action.

I enjoyed this book, and I was surprised by how candid this book was about Miles's faults and even his sexual shortcomings. It's amazing how the town understood Mrs. Francine Whiting's revenge except the victim of the revenge, although I'm surprised she didn't go after David too. Characters come out clear, and I felt empathetic toward everyone, including Mrs. Whiting who confessed that payback was the only way to assuage her life. Even her daughter, Cindy surprised me with her intelligence, chiding Miles for thinking she was living a pathetic life. Story of Miles Roby, lifelong resident of Empire Falls, a fictional town in Maine. Miles was very smart, but dropped out of college, because his mother was ill, and he works at the Empire Grill, the same place he has worked in since high school. He is in the midst of a divorce. His wife, Janine, is divorcing him in favor of a man, who makes her feel alive sexually. Miles and Janine have a beautiful sensitive daughter, Christina, who is struggling with the divorce, her loathing of her mother’s new beau, and the break-up with a menacing boyfriend. There are other characters, who are equally vivid – the patient priest and the foul condemning one; the fading beauty, Charlene, who works as a waitress; the intelligent reporter, Horace, who eats lunch at the Empire Grill; the kindhearted high school principal, Otto; Jimmy - the former neighbor and now police officer, who cannot stop envying Miles, and Miles's charming thief of a father, who appears more bon vivant than cruel. Book of lost dreams, and also the loss of love. It took a while to get into - I'm not a fan of prologues, but then I was hooked, and I actually wish the book was longer. Some might disagree, but I like the somewhat tidy hopeful ending. It may sound convenient, but sometimes life works out the way you hope it will.

I am a mother of one of the men of Chosen Few who died at the Battle of Wanat. For nine years, I have read every Army and civilian document that I could get my hands on dealing with the battle, so I eagerly anticipated Gregg Zoroya's book. I read it this weekend and was simply blown away by his superb research, beautiful and touching portrayal of the men, and the exquisite way he weaves the complicated history of the Army campaign in the Waygal Valley alongside the heroism of Chosen Company. Truly brilliant work! Since Jason's death, I have longed to see my son's story, and that of Chosen Company, released to the world. This fabulous book does just that. My heart is at rest.

I found The Chosen Few to be very readable and was quickly absorbed by the story of this company of men.Nowhere in the book did I find the author questioning the correctness or incorrectness of our being in Afghanistan. I believe that he wanted this to be a story about the soldier from their perspective and he achieved that in a way that left me with a better understanding of the terror of combat and how soldiers can make themselves do what needs to be done.I have read and studied military history for 50 years and recommend The Chosen Few to anyone trying to view modern warfare from the perspective of a soldier. I'm not a military buff but I read about the Battle of Wanat in the newspapers and since my son decided to join the Army I've been paying more attention to stories that give me insight into what his future may hold. I could not put this book down. The descriptions of Army Airbourne School at Ft. Benning sounded as though the author was at the dinner table listening to my son explain the training, and it gave me trust in the other images he painted with words of war. His detailed descriptions gave color to the black and whites of the men included in the book. Through brutal facts the stories of the "lost boys" in Chosen Company came alive on the page and led me through their three primary battles. I could "see" the ambush and feel the anguish of these real-life heros trying to stay alive and keep their comrades from falling to overwhelming opposition. Though the book stayed focused on the men and the circumstances of their lives and deaths before and after this deployment, there was just enough description of the military strategy issues to provide me the context I needed to feel like our military leaders were balancing key strategic goals with the lives of our men in uniform. With a journalist's eye for details and facts Gregg Zoroya has given us an important tale of heroism, sacrifice, bravery and a peek into the true costs of war. I am forever grateful to him for telling the story of these men and their families.

Gregg Zoroya's astonishing book, thoroughly researched and beautifully written, brings the lives, sacrifices and courage of the Chosen Few to vivid life. The intricacies of the three pivotal battles are so clearly - and devastatingly - presented, and the depiction of the bonds forged by these remarkable young men are so deeply moving, that I couldn't put this book down - and it stayed with me long after I had read the final pages. For the questions this book tacitly raises, which are as pertinent today as they were during the Chosen's deployment, and for its unforgettable depictions of the lives of these amazing young men, this book is a revelation and a must read.

This is one of the best war stories I have ever read. The author manged to recreate the horrific and intense hours of combat that took place in three separate occasions. Paratroopers of "C" Company of the 173rd Airborne experienced hell on earth at the battle of what they called the "Ranch House;" in an ambush on their way to a meeting with treacherous village elders; and during the Taliban assault of their base in Wanat. Readers may want to look these places up on You Tube and watch some videos to get an idea. What is so sad and crazy is that no amount of military training can ensure you do not get killed in the most un-fortuitous, random way. Soldiers got killed and wounded without ever knowing from where and how....this is how horrible war is these days. But then again, not that trench warfare of WWI or front-line battles of WWII were a picnic either...What is evident from reading this book is how much these soldiers loved and relied on each other, forging an unbreakable bond for the rest of their lives.

This book is an excellent read. I really felt for the Chosen Few. As usual, the conventional (Big Army) Army leadership was ill equiped to deal with the situation on the ground and again attempted to lead from an environment not remotely connected to the reality of what's happening in the battle area. It reminds me of why I spen15 years in Special Forces to get away from the lead from the rear concept. "It's the mindset stupid". Ten years and 58,000 live later and you still can't tell the difference between sheep crap and apple butter. JH

The works speak for themselves. I love the convenience of having the material in a single package, allowing me to conveniently reread favorite passages, refresh my memory of works I haven't read in a while, and lose myself in the imagination of this bard/historian/sociologist/analyst.

I wasn't thrilled with this compilation of stories. I don't like poems and I don't like books that have stories that would only be of interest to children.

The works of Kipling speak to a bygone time when he refers to the British Empire and the attitude of "our Empire"; that is of value historically. His take on the life of the common British soldier is almost painful to read since he encapsulated then what many soldiers experience today.
