A stunning story about the Cold War that actually began before the end of WWII.USAAF forces, in support of the Red Army advance westward into Poland and Germany, began using "shuttle" missions by their B-24 and B-17 bombers- launch from bases in Britain, France and Italy, strike targets in the eastern areas of the Reich, and continue on to Red Army held territory (as they did not have the range to return to their bases). There, they would re-fuel and re-arm, and strike targets on their way back.Naturally, a number of aircraft were forced to crash-land in territory held by the Soviets, and the USAAF was anxious to get their planes and crews back- and they applied for permission to recover said aircraft.Enter Captain Robert Trimble, newly minted member of the "Lucky Bastards Club", the select few who had managed to complete the required 35 missions over enemy territory before being rotated home. Trimble was called to his CO's office and offered a choice- go home for a three week leave, and then possibly be re-assigned to a new set of combat missions (maybe in the Pacific), or agree to a "safer" aircraft recovery mission in the Eastern European Theater with the willing help of the Communists. Trimble's experience of combat missions flying both B-17s AND B-24s gave him a rather unique set of qualifications- and he was rated one of his squadron's best officers, as well.He began to notice odd things as he began to train for his new mission, not the least of which was the involvement of the Office of Strategic Services (OSS). He was to discover that his mission was not only to recover downed US aircraft, he was also to try to repatriate Axis held POWs who had been "liberated" by the Russians. Aircrews who had managed to evade capture by the Germans were treated as heroes by the Reds, but those taken prisoner were considered to be cowards, and abandoned after the POW camps were captured.The Russians performed mass executions of their own people who had been captured by the Nazis, and actively interfered with attempts by the Western Allies to recover theirs. Trimble's assignment was to outfox the Soviets and bring our people home, and in the process freed many more- other allied military, and hundreds of slave workers transported from their native countries to perform duties in the Nazi labor camps.This story is much more than the recollections of one man- it is meticulously researched- many military archives were investigated, and all of Trimble's verifiable details have proven accurate.It is a tale of derring-do, of the nasty politics at work between the "Allies", outright lies, deceits, and obstruction on the part of "Uncle Joe" Stalin, and the bravery and ingenuity of American and other freedom-minded people in a terrible time and place.I cannot recommend this book highly enough- five stars seems inadequate- this story must be known. It screams out for a legitimate historical movie or mini-series ala "Band of Brothers".One more note: I have been a fan of the movie "Patton", starring George C. Scott, for many years. This book illustrates a major failing of that tale. There is a point in the movie where Patton laments his inability to start a new war with the Russians to his friend Omar Bradley, and it is treated as a humorous, insane side-note to General Patton's career. It turns out that General Patton knew full well about the treatment of American POWs in Soviet held territory- treatment that would have been considered an act of war under any other circumstances. I was born in October,1945 and as such consider myself "one lucky bastard" in that freedom was my first gift after life itself. After a 20 plus career with the NYPD, I have spent the last 28 years teaching fifth grade, and you better believe that I will introduce my students to the heroic exploits of Capt. Robert Tillman. His story has strengthened my own idea of the greatness of that generation, and of the men and women who suffered in so many countries throughout the world. My own daughter-in-law's grandfather "opened up" about the European theater in my classroom, but informed the students that he could not talk about his liberation of an "unnamed" camp, In closing, I was riveted by Capt. Trimble's story and could feel his fear, anguish, and frustration during those "4" months in hell. I found it particularly ironic that I began the book 70 years to the day in February, 1945 as his journey was initiated.This is a must read for all citizens, who think that they have something to complain about!George M.

2nd book I've read recently by a child of someone who served in WW2 and wanted to tell their parent's story. Well done!Reading how that bastard Stalin and the evil empire, treated Poland, American POWs, and even their own people raised my blood pressure. And how we, the USA, felt it necessary to appease those bastards.People like Captain Trimble and so many others from all countries fought (and continue to fight) to do right by people, to treat them humanely, and to deliver some hope to this world.I applaud the guts and heart of Captain Trimble and the effort and skill of his son in telling his story.

This is a story in the Second World War that needed to be told. We were told that the Russians were our "Allies" during WWII in the fight against the Axis Powers. Alas, it wasn't true. This is the accounting of a man that was tricked into thinking he was just going to be picking up broken airplanes and he not only did what was actually requested of him but went above and beyond. We are so fortunate to live in the time of peace that we do, for the men and women who fought in the Second World War they didn't have this luxury, evil and conceit was ever present and this Airman saw through it all. I was haunted by the account of the P51 pilot who to this day lays in an unmarked grave killed by Russians so they could steal his airplane to study the technology. With the story of that loss comes also many successful missions that saved hundreds of people from certain death.

This is a part of WW2 I had no idea ever took place! Well written and very interesting. A must have for WW2 buffs. Makes you wonder if the Russians really were on our side or not. What a bunch of paranoid jack asses. I guess life was pretty cheap for the commies back then. The hardships suffered by so many in Eastern Europe is beyond imagination. Some very brave American Airmen did all they could to rescue downed American pilots. A must read and I really enjoyed it.

This book tells a haunting and dramatic real life story that will stay with me a long time. It gives at least a small idea of what it was like to be Capt. Trimble, caught between the human suffering on the eastern front (as the Nazi's withdrew and the Soviets advanced) and the big power politics that hindered every effort to relieve that suffering next to impossible. My only slight complaint is that the writing seems to me to be a little melodramatic, when just the facts are enough to move the reader. Still, I recommend this book, both for history buffs and for anyone who wants a glimpse of the realities of the tradgedy of the countless POWs, civilians and concentration camp survivors, displaced by WWII.

Rev. Mathison delivers a good, down-home and accessible daily devotional to go with the Stewardship Campaign of the same name. Many people (especially older Christians who are used to "the country preacher" type) in my congregation found this a great read without the esoteric language of some other authors, and the friendly style with which Rev. Mathison writes is a great way to bring people into the discussion, no matter their age. I do wish he had used less of the storytelling tangents (random, quick stories/quips thrown in to the middle of an explanation), but that is probably just my personal taste, as some people do like that sort of thing.Another piece which kept this from getting 5 stars, is that the membership vows have been updated for the UMC and are not reflected in this book: prayers, presence, gifts, service and witness. "Witness" is pretty much left out as a named theme, but the way I got around that was to plug "witness" in to Commitment Sunday. Thus my congregation was witnessing to their faith by pledging to our common ministry in 2015. It worked, and the readings even go with it without explicitly naming it as "witness," but further consonance would be appreciated considering this change happened in 2008.The Study as a whole campaign is a good one and is very simple to execute. I would give the actual book 3 stars, but the campaign as a whole upped the star count since it is such a good study especially for a church with limited resources.

I love this book! A few years ago our pastor had our whole church use it as a book study. We were using it to help us become more involved with stewardship in our church. I really enjoyed it. A couple of years ago I decided to reread it as part of a Lenten challenge to myself. It has 40 short chapters which works out perfectly. I couldn't ask for better topics: how God loves us, prayer, how important it is to be part of your church family, etc. Last year I went to get the book out for the season of lent and remembered that I had let someone borrow it (I have no idea who). I was thrilled when I saw the Kindle edition. Now I can't lose it! I am again reading it for Lent. Such a great read!

As a United Methodist pastor, our church decided on this study for a stewardship series but it is so much more than that. I was thrilled to realize that it took us back to the principles of membership commitment in the United Methodist Church. The only thing missing is a section on witness now that the General Conference made the change to the membership vows. Maybe John Ed could write a supplement to the book to include witness. I would recommend this even as a tool prior to new members joining so they know what is expected of them.

Many many many many examples of truth in Christianity. Not much new thought

Our church has wonderful studies and this book is currently being used. The church needs participants to buy their own books and they cost nearly 20.00 retail not really in my budget. I waa able to get the book for less than half of that from amazon!The book is truly transforming and I highly recommend it for a personal read or a small group study. I was blessed enough to meet the author when he did a training about this very book. I hope you get a chance to study this and go to the training if one is in your area. You will not be sorry you purchased the book and if you are part of a small church as I am buying on amazon is a great way to make studies affordable!!

This is an excellent eye and soul opening book! Makes you re-think things in your life and in your church, re-evaluate your priorities, excuses, and actions. Re-grounds you in prayer and re-centers your focus. An excellent easy read, easy to get concepts that are potentially soul shaping and infectious :)

I first heard of this book when one of my church members recommended getting a group together to study the lessons in this book. I have been reading, thinking and praying through each chapter. I like that it is not "preachy" or too fundamental but a real-world approach to deepening spiritual understanding.

This book was use my 120 people in our church as a Bible Study. The subjects in the book relate to the vows of membership in the United Methodist Church in the United States. There is also another book that can be used with it titled Transformed Giving that was use in our church as a Stewardship campaign. The book is an easy read.John Ed Mathison, the author, uses Biblical principals, humorous stories throughout the book that keeps the readerintrigued by his style of writing.

The often overlooked "fourth trimester" is just as important to prepare and plan for as the first three. Though a lot of this book has to do with nutrition during the postpartum period it covers much more, such as insights into very common and normal postpartum feelings that can be very scary, confusing, or depressing to navigate when you feel like you're the only mom that has ever felt that way. Trust me you are not. This book will help you take on the new adventure of motherhood feeling grounded and empowered, to know it's ok to set boundaries for family and friends while you adjust to a new routine, and make it easy to keep you, and therefore your baby, healthy and well nourished.There is a lot of information regarding traditional postpartum practices from around the world and particularly China as that is the authors heritage/background. Some of these things will probably seem very weird or even gross to those of us modern western world mothers. However, the author does not make any kind of requirements for postpartum care only suggestions and guidelines. I encourage you to read this with an open mind and anything not interesting to you is easily skipped over. There will still be so much knowledge, history, and nutritional care to take away from this read.

Great book and good reminder for preparing for the “fourth trimester.” I got it because I was preparing for my “sitting moon month” with my second kid, but couldn’t read the Chinese books my mom gave me. Wish I started reading it earlier (like say end of second trimester to start preparing for the final trimester) because there is a lot of information in it and my baby arrived several weeks early! Great tips that go beyond Chinese custom and reminded us the importance of taking care of mom after baby birth is international custom-not just Asian.My only issue with this book is that it almost has too much info and I don’t have the luxury of time to fully READ the entire book (as I have an toddler already to care for while preparing for my new one). It would be great to have a shorter “cliff notes” version for those of us moms who just don’t have the time. Just because you’re a second time or multi time mom doesn’t mean you don’t need this info or reminder to take care of you after baby comes, but it’s just too wordy to get through the whole thing. Maybe if you’re a first time mom that has time to read through a bunch of baby prep books but not one that already has kids.Nevertheless very good book and great reminder to all moms how and the importance to take care of herself the months after birth.

This is a FANTASTIC book. After the oh-so-common "superwoman complex" drove me to exhaustion and illness following my first pregnancy, I decided I deserved a better experience the second time around, as did my baby, my toddler, and my husband. But I wasn't sure how exactly to pull it off. This book provides a great overview of how traditional cultures the world over have honored and helped to restore new mothers following childbirth, while maintaining an open-eyed perspective on what is realistic in many western cultures today.My husband (an avid cook) has already made several of the recipes at the end, even though baby has yet to arrive, and they are all remarkably comforting and delicious. Even if you decide to skip some of the more unusual recipes, there are great basic ideas here, and the recipes are really only a small fraction of what make this book so helpful. At its heart is a recognition of the sacredness of this special time, and the necessity of supporting the new mother as she restores herself mentally, physically, and spiritually during this fleeting but critically important transition.

this book is not just for women. This is a great guide with wonderful recipes that husbands like me can easily make to ensure the mother of our children is healthy and recovers fully after giving birth. Highly recommend for new parents!

The story behind the book is what moves me, the rituals or traditions, the “sacred” place and bonds of a special phase in life, but the actual recipes not much... I eat pretty healthy and home cooked meals. Most of these meals have some hard to find ingredients if you don’t live in a well resourced big city. Plus in my case a lot of the stuff does not appease my taste, lots of work.

I am prepping for my babys arrival and this book has helped me alot. I want to spend the postpartum time healing and bonding with my baby. So meal prep has been my top priority these past few weeks. I am due any day now. But not worried about the food that I'll be eating afterwards. My husband can easily take the single serving containers from the freezer and warm it up whenever I am hungry. This book was exactly what I was looking for , a good interesting read . A collection of true, spooky stories that show that these paranormal experiences can happen to anyone . Ghost Crimes was very well written, well organized and not too short ! Loved it !

Wow! I don't go for sensationalism in the paranormal. I want to know the truth. Even in its simplest form, the truth has a message. However, this is one book that can be disturbing at times because of what human beings do to each other. And the cops involved were faced with frightening and life threatening situations that they'd rather forget. I'm familiar with the author personally and believe in his integrity. These stories are all true and the book is well-written. Really enjoyed it.

I like reading factual cases. This is a fictional story. Was disappointed and felt mislead. Oh well. I did opt for a used copy and it did come in good shape and was every bit as good as a new copy.

A well written and interesting book. Good character portraits and a fast paced book. A good read congrats to the author.

I mean really! Ps... In what world does an investigative cop dust for prints!? In a kidnapping case at that!? There would be dozens of crime scene techs ready to do their thing. 3 stars for the imagination of the writer and minus 2 for lying and not classifying this book for what it really is! FICTION. It would've been good as a thriller novel. No need for the B'S.

Okay not sure what they mean by "Adventure" map. Most maps show places of interest with some kind of marking. The only thing this one shows in addition to what my far cheaper Triple A map has is past World Cup stadiums (Zzzzzz!) otherwise it's a normal map with a very good coating on it. NO close-in maps of Berlin, Munich, Frankfurt, Cologne...lovely pictures, though! You can also see a good 10 miles into all surrounding countries Belgium, Luxembourg, France, Switzerland, etc. I am also a member of Triple A in the U.S. and they have a map that is 97% as good in terms of easy to read, but with no coating on the paper. BUT it has Czech/Slovak republics as well as Poland besides Germany and instead of pictures it has close-in views of Munich, Berlin, Warsaw and another one or two towns. $6 for non members. $2 for members. I am keeping both, realizing it's easier to write and mark up the paper one once I have decided where I am going. The coated one could be good for travel since it won't tear easily. Decide how you will use your map. If you aren't going to drive, I'd plan off of paper myself. I found the size of both of the maps described quite manageable.Oh, I would also recommend buying one of those plastic flat magnification reader thingies that you can sometimes get as a giveaway. They also make ones that are whole-page sized, but that won't travel well. If you are over 40, you will need it. If you are under 40 you'll find it easier to see the tighter towns.

Great map for the money - I love that it has attractions listed - some that you can not find in the guide books! I know most people depend on GPS and similar technology when traveling, but nothing beats a good map when you are in unfamiliar territory. I never travel without one! I especially like the Nat. Geo. Maps - I've purchased several and have never been disappointed

this is one of the most durable maps i have ever owned. always good to have a new map. dont rely on old ones. but i must add the quality is tops

Scale is too small. Most text is unreadable.Good map for basic country overview planning but due to scale it is unusable for travel.

We found this map very useful on our travels in southern Germany. We used the map to discover son interesting sites by taking diversions from our planned route. This is the second National Geographic Map we have purchased and both have been great additions to our travel plans. .

Great map; however, I didn't realize you get North Germany on 1 side & South Germany on the other. I had to order another after receiving the 1st as I needed to pin it up on the wall.

My husband is taking his 78 year-old parents to Germany for month to celebrate their 50th anniversary. I bought his dad three maps and a 2015 Germany book for Father's Day in preparation for their trip. Both his parents have loved pouring over these maps and book for th past couple of months .This map is a durable, high-quality map that will be easy to handle, open/close.

This is my third National Geographic map and I won’t ever buy any other brand but this one. The maps are water resistant and can be folded hundreds times without worrying about tearing at the seams. The map is a perfect size to use at home or in the car and has excellent details for sightseeing. Looking for a good map to Germany or elsewhere, you can’t go wrong with this one!
