I'll cut to the chase: I purchased three different books about outdoor survival; this is the one that I'll be carrying in my personal backpack to help me get out of any bad situations that I encounter.Words are pretty much limited to instructions, and there is an illustrative picture for every scenario; just what I want if, God forbid, I'm thrust into a survival situation.Not 5 stars because the illustrations are not in color and because its thicker and heavier than one would want to carry on an ultra-light hike. But it covers SO MANY scenarios that a lighter book would have required a sacrifice of content. At least the book is compact and printed on quality stock that won't fall apart the first time the book gets rained on.A very good value that serves its purpose well.

I ordered this book in hopes that it would be well worth it, I received it and couldn't put it down. The author has created a solid survival book that gives information in a way that is easy to understand and directions that are easy to follow. Some of the information is common sense when it comes to letting people know where you are going when going into the wilderness. I learned a lot of information on building shelters that I didn't know before I picked up the book, it also explains a lot about proper kits and what to have on hand when going hiking.I couldn't put this down, and will surely place it in my pack along with some other helpful books and gear. If you are a prepper or want to learn more about wilderness survival I suggest picking up this book. You will not regret it.

Great book, full of great information .

This book is a perfect reveiw for those that have already had the training and are getting rusty through lack of use like retirement. As to being a practical how to book of survival the best this will do is steer you towards other books that have more in depth training. An example would be The Trapper's Bible which can take you from novice to self reliant with traps, snares, and pathguards. If your only goal is to find out what type of training you would receive in Special Forces Survival schools this book is a good reference guide, not a definitive training manual. In short you can't read this and train yourself to become a survivalist. If you have already mastered the art of fire with a hand drill, half a page of instruction and one still picture of a spun stick can jog your memories of just how many hours it took to actually become a practical fire starter. Military training courses like Artic Survival Training (AST) Jungle Environment Survival Training (JEST) take many weeks and are only the starting point for things covered by half a page of text and a diagram within this book. It would be far more productive to purchase the old military playing cards specific to your intended areas of travel than to try and survive with the limited edible non-edible plant and insect guide paragraphs contained within this book. This book is most properly titled: Special Forces Survival Guide. Without the coresponding survival training schools I can't really say it is of much use. To those that already have the proper training this is a great (sailor's lexicon) gouge book.

This is a great reference book. It is not something I could sit down and read like a traditional book; probably better suited to be packed in your camping gear or referenced prior to going camping. It also could be very useful in the event of a hostile zombie takeover.

The survival techniques are very good! MY Favorite survival good to book! Very satisfied!

I received the Special Forces Survival Guide and, for the most part, was satisfied with the contents therein. That for which I didn't care was the "drawings" of edible plants. Just a slight variation could be the difference between life and death should one trust the illustration and forego the testing of plants. One other miss was what do to when a tick has attached itself to you. The book states it wou8ld be covered in the first aid chapter but, so far, it's eluded me. All in all, it's a great book for those of us who trek into nature. I would suggest that those of you who want to discover and eat wild plants to invest in a book that uses photographs rather than illustrations.

This book is filled with great advise for camping and hiking. It tells what you should have and do if you get lost in all types of terrians. The only thing I wish was better is that the pictures would be better.

The book needs to be updated very badly, especially for a movement that is so rapidly changing. The information in this book is outdated and inaccurate. There are some parts that I suspect are still useful but there is no way of knowing which is which. I highly do NOT recommend this book until they make an updated addition.

A great book! Packed full of great information for planning volunteer duty in Israel. I am planning my trip with a full understanding of the culture and facts of kibbutz lifestyle, all based on what I learned from the book. I highly recomend this book to any one planning on spending time in the middle east!

I’ve been a fan of historical romance for quite a while and recently discovered A. S. Fenichel’s books. I enjoyed reading A Lady’s Virtue. I have found her stories with strong female characters delightful. Looking forward to more stories of the Everton Domestic Society women.

This is an enjoyable addition to the Everton Domestic Society series. Everton is an employment agency of sorts. They provide ladies to perform tasks such as introducing a debutant to society, planning events, matchmaking, etc. for their clients. All of the proprieties are met and the ladies are provided with chaperones, transportation, etc. during the performance of their tasks. They also live at Everton House.Sylvia Dowder had spent five years of her life being courted by and betrothed to Hunter Gautier. A month before her wedding, Hunter inherited the title of Viscount March and promptly ended the betrothal – because Sylvia wasn’t lofty enough in society to be a Viscountess. Between that punch to the gut and her mother’s constant belittlement and preaching about the perfidies of the male of the species, Sylvia knew she couldn’t/wouldn’t marry. She also decided that she couldn’t live with her mother’s constant belittlement any longer and applied to become an Everton Lady.Anthony Braighton was rocking along in his life quite happily until his much-loved cousin died and Anthony inherited the title – Earl of Grafton. Tony didn’t want to be an earl and he certainly doesn’t want to marry as his mother is constantly prodding him to do. He can’t do anything about the title, but he can show his mother that he is perfectly capable of meeting his obligations without marrying. He’ll just hire an Everton Lady to plan several social events and at their successful completion, his mother will understand that he doesn’t need a wife.There is an immediate attraction between Tony and his Everton Lady, Sylvia. However, neither of them want to admit it – and neither wants to act on it. Tony is quicker to ‘give in’ and admit he wants Sylvia than she is. The road to gain her trust is not an easy one – and until about the last chapter in the book you don’t see how they are going to get to their HEA.I never did come to understand Tony's aversion to marriage. His parents had a happy and loving marriage as does his sister and a number of his friends. I can understand any young man not wanting to marry but Tony was adamant - because he had things he wanted to do. I did understand Sylvia's aversion. She'd suffered what I guess would be mental abuse her entire life. She was constantly told how bad men were, how they used women, etc. - and then with her engagement being broken as it was, she was totally convinced.I’m not sure what it is with authors and alliteration in character names, but this book is another example – we have Sylvia, Serena, and Sophia. For this reader, that is usually a distraction because I’m constantly having to stop and remember which character is which. For some reason, that wasn’t an issue this time.While I enjoyed the read, there were some inaccuracies and the use of more modern words – like okay. Tony talks about not accepting the title, giving up the title, etc. and that just wasn’t possible. The only way to get rid of the title was to die or be a traitor. Even the King couldn’t take the title away.I voluntarily read and reviewed an Advanced Reader Copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

Sylvia Dowder is a disgrace to her family due to a broken engagement by a cad she was engaged to but has finally found a place she can call home at the Everton Domestic Society. Her latest assignment is to act as hostess and decorator for American turned Lord Anthony Braighton, Earl of Grafton. He’s handsome to be sure but she vows never to trust her heart to an aristocrat again. She builds up walls and resists his advances at every turn. It’s only when his life is in danger that she must choose between past hurts and the love that awaits her in Anthony’s arms.A Lady’s Virtue is book three in the Everton Domestic Society series and I must say, this is certainly the best one yet. Not only does the reader get to catch up on previous couples and what they’re up to but Sylvia and Anthony are a heart-wrenching couple.Anthony is resistant to marriage and voices this sentiment often. He’s seen his sister and their friends couple up but it’s not for him. But Sylvia opens his heart and mind to the possibility. Sylvia, on the other hand, has gone through one scandal after another. She’s an embarrassment to her mother, a social climber if there ever was one, and Sylvia’s content to be a spinster, working for Lady Jane. When Anthony breaks through the walls around her heart, she’s visibly shaken. Love is a scary thing and the emotions Sylvia works through is heart-breaking for the reader.I personally loved every minute of it! Another historical romance gem from A.S. The beautiful binding with gold imprints and closed book page coloration makes this a natural gift item. The pen drawing illustrations inside are exquisite. They are of framing quality. The recipes are a little different than what you might rxpect in the average Italian cookbook. The two health-conscious chef authors explain why. This id a charming cookbook and I will be gifting it to my foodie friends with a bottle of white truffle oil for Christmas.

I visited this restaurant a couple of weeks ago, and had some of the best food I had ever tasted. Pure and simple, excellent quality, I couldn't wait to get the book and start cooking! This book is everything you could hope for in a cookbook. The recipes are clearly explained, the ingredients are easy to get ( you probably have most of them), and the resulting dishes are absolutely delicious. I tried three recipes over the last holiday weekend, and my family and guests were delighted. The Sunday Sauce and Meatballs are wonderful! A bonus is the excellent narrative that accompanies the recipes; funny, practical and smart; you won't be able to resist trying this food. I collect cookbooks,and this one is going to spend alot of time in the kitchen with me, not so much time on the shelf.

Love this cookbook....it's not often you buy a book of this quality....I look forward to cooking these recipes & with Frankies olive oil. I will be giving these out for Christmas gifts to my chef members! I just can't say enough good about this book....perfect for beginners and well seasoned cooks :D

This is a nice readable book. It would be nice for someone with a massive collection of cookbooks that was looking for something just a little different. The best part is that after growing up in NYC most of the dishes in this book I have had while growing up. There are a few different ones I will try but most look really great and just reading thru them I can already tell the flavors will go together very well and the finished dish will be tasty. Next time I am up in the city I will have to make a trip to one of their restaurants.

I love reading this book, the chapter on equipment and pantry are worth the price of admission alone. You gain so much kitchen and cooking knowledge that you can apply to all types of cooking. The recipes are spot on and easy to follow. I highly recommend this book!

After enjoying an unforgettable meal at Frankies, had to order the book. I grew up in the neighborhood but had been away for a few years.My friends that stayed told me this was their favorite spot. Now I can try their recipes.

I live just up the street from Frankies, and can honestly say these recipes are exactly like they prepare them in the restaurant. The cavateli with brown sage butter is my go to, and I cannot tell the difference between the dish I prepare and Frankies.

This is the textbook for foster (and fost-to-adopt) parents. If you do not have it yet, stop reading reviews now and buy it on your tablet or Kindle or audible so you can read it immediately. If you have friends or family new to fostering, buy them this book now.This book should be given to every foster parent upon completion of training or during training. It's a shame they mention the book, the author, and the research during training but not simply hand out the book as your reference Bible for the tough times sure to come.I wish we had this book when we had our first placement. He had been through hell and his behaviors were beyond our comprehension. Within the first few pages of the book is a table that connects behaviors to feelings that should be passed out to every foster parent before a child moves in.

This was a very helpful book! We are in the process of adoption, and it was recommended to us to read this book. We have listened to Dr. Purvis in the past and learned so much for her approach. This book will be kept within handy reach. She has so many wonderful ideas for how to interact with a child coming from a traumatic background. It is helpful for any child, not just a foster or adopted child!

Was this book really only $6.74?! I have a decent foundation in child development and managing "normal" behavior, but I read this book in preparation for becoming a foster parent to kids who have experienced trauma. This is an absolutely fabulous book on basic parenting, with very specific instructions for how to work with troubled children. I love it and I know I am going to be structuring our home life around what I've learned from this book.

This book was recommended to me by my adoption caseworker and by other adoptive moms in a public forum. I strongly recommend it! We are about to adopt siblings and, even though they don't have any current behavior concerns like hoarding or RAD, this book has still been helpful in parenting any children who have experienced trauma. The book has lots of examples and lots of specific ways to help connect and support your children. I'm about halfway through the book now (I read half and then re-read half with a pencil, making notes and underling parts I wanted to remember) and the chapters on "Felt Safety" and "Teaching Life Values" have been the most helpful so far - well, that our struggles are not ours alone - others have had them and many have surpassed them. Karyn Purvis is an expert in the field - and after reading this book, I understand why her name is so well known. Her work is realistic, down to earth, and filled with hope. If you are adopting or work with foster or adopted children, this is a great read.The book's main points are: - The key is to treat the whole child - and we'll help you do that! - Start where your child is - Compassion is key - Focus on nurturing and structure / connecting and correcting - "At-risk youngsters are capable of making tremendous strides toward overcoming early hardships and limitations."

This book is about attachment parenting or caregiving to children who have come through difficult situations. It gives ideas on how to approach a difficult child with love and understanding. I will keep this book as a companion to my baby book on attachment parenting called Christian Parenting and Childcare by Dr. William Sears. This particular book does NOT use scripture but it is scriptural in its teaching. Good for foster children, adoptive children from other cultures and children who have been in violent or emotionally abusive homes.

I don't often rave about parenting books because everybody has their own style of parenting and every kid is different. There is a reason there are thousands of parenting books on the market. However, this one stands alone! I only got this because it was required reading for our adoption agency, but I am SO glad it was.Though there are times when I wished the author had gone into greater detail (especially on the nutrition chapter), this book does a great job of providing parents with MANY tools that I feel every parent can benefit from. It is geared toward adopted/abused children, but I really felt like it pertained a lot about my biological children as well. This book can give you a sense of control especially with stubborn, strong-willed children. I speak from experience. I don't know which is more helpful, the tools offered by this book or the sense of having options. I don't think you can go wrong with this book!

Dr. Purvis spent much of her life studying and working with adopted children from many walks of life. In her book "The Connected Child" she makes gross generalizations for ALL adopted children stating that they are ALL "at risk" and therefore all will act out. As I have read this book, I can see the behaviors she describes in many children, biological or adopted. In fact, as I reflect on my childhood, I see many of the behaviors in myself.The parenting techniques that Dr. Purvis offers are great and often work very well. The techniques don't include screaming and yelling, solitary punishment, or physical punishment. The techniques are focused on redirection and correction of the behaviors. It gives you techniques on how to train a child to control their behaviors and express how they are feeling. It gives insights on how to help your child make decisions by giving them choices. It gives you tools to use to help kids to stop and think about what they have just done wrong, and how to do it right.If you can read past the generalizations of "at risk" adopted children, the parenting techniques and tools provided in this book are great and I think any parent, of biological children or adopted, can benefit from the lessons.

I have just read the book. I am very knowledgeable about the scientific research on the effects of marijuana.The authors give a ton of factual information in the book. The book is easy to read.The authors give their opinions at the end of the book. All 3 differ. They also jointly give parameters at the end of the book regarding what controls they believe there should be with legalization. They believe that there should be significantly more control with legalization than there currently has been in any of the states that have legalized with the exception of Vermont.I would highly recommend the book. It is written by public policy experts who do not have a particular dog in the marijuana legalization fight. It is balanced and will help readers understand the different types of plans that one could use when legalizing marijuana. So far, in all states except Vermont, it has been one size fits all. But there are other ways to do this and the authors do a good job at describing these other ways.Unless you already know a good amount about this topic, you will come away knowing a lot more.

This is a good book written by people who write for the RAND corporation, a well known think tank, often employed by the government and other large organizations. It is thorough and a more scholarly writing than most books on marijuana. The authors point out many of the pros and cons that may be associated with marijuana legalization. In most cases they note that much of what is stated today by proponents as well as opponents of legalization is currently not able to be verified scientifically. They frequently use the phrase "unintended consequences" when talking about legalization. In one of the later chapters the four authors each summarize their own position. Only one would not legalize or make many changes to current laws the other three all would like to see changes made but each has concerns and each vary in his/her approach to legalization. I had previously read Marijuana is Safer: So Why Are We Driving People to Drink (2nd edition) and this book, along with additional research tempered my views. I now would like to see the Federal government turn this question over to the states, and have the DEA reduce marijuana from its current Schedule 1 status to a Schedule 3, 4 or 5.

There are many books and other sources of information with strong points of view, pro and con, for legalization of marijuana. There are precious few that give a balanced view on both sides of the issue, and this one is essential reading for anyone who wants to be informed, who hasn't already made up their minds.Some of the facts covered here:Americans are increasingly open to the idea. Rasmussen released a poll in May, 2012 which found that 56 percent of Americans were in favor of "legalizing marijuana and regulating it in a similar manner to the way alcohol and tobacco cigarettes are regulated today." Older Americans tended to be much more negative than younger Americans, so it may be that the pressure to legalize will continue to grow.A key analysis: legal Marijuana might be incredibly cheap. As the authors point out, marijuana is a nonperishable bulk commodity like wheat, corn, coffee and tea. For those kinds of commodities, cost of production is the key driver. Modern American agriculture and its related packaging and transportation methods are incredibly efficient, especially on a large scale and in areas conducive to large yields.Canada produces industrial hemp industry for about $500 per acre. If mid-grade commercial marijuana (a similar plant) could be grown at that cost, the price to the consumer would be about 20 cents per pound. Better grades of marijuana would cost more; as the authors write: "production costs for crops that need to be transplanted, such as cherry tomatoes and asparagus, are generally in the range of $5,000-$20,000 per acre." Those more labor intensive crops suggest a consumer price of under $20 per pound to less than $5 a pound depending on quality. Those prices compare with price of "other legal herbs such as tea or tobacco ... 100 times lower than the current prevailing price of $300 per ounce --- or a few cents per joint."Whether you support or oppose legalization, this data is useful: increases in consumption might be very high, but tax revenues might be significantly higher as well. Federal cigarette taxes bring in about $10 billion a year, but the authors believe legalization couldn't yield revenues at that level.Nonetheless, it is very helpful to have firm data from which to reach policy decisions, and the authors provide that sort of information -- not only on the costs of production and possible tax revenues, but on other possible benefits -- and disadvantages. This book is essential reading for anyone interested in the issues.Robert C. In some ways I am not sure how to review this book. It reads more like a very critical piece with much discussion of addiction/dependance which the authors weave into most topics. While not addictive, a few people, especially young people, can certainly become dependent but it seemed to me cannabis dependence is over stated. I think one thing of value here is an honest discussion of some claims about the economics of legalization. However, having said that, I also think the authors give short shrift to hemp. The extrapolate from current use which does not strike me as valid. If hemp was legal, I believe many more uses as well as the economies of scale would result in a healthy, environmentally friendly industry. I recommend that those who advocate legalization as I do, should read this book so as to help keep their discussions more factual. If this review seems to vacillate between positive and negative it is because does but that's the value of the book.

If you are at all interested in the implications of legalizing the recreational use of marijuana, this book is a "must read." The authors describe the behavioral effects of marijuana, the harms, the various ways to ingest the drug, the medical benefits and the implications on driving after marijuana use. They bring us up-to-date on what has happened in the states that have legalized marijuana and make estimates for the future. Just an excellent book!
