I bought this book thinking it would guide you step by step on how to prep and paint a car for a novice, since if course your buying a book. But instead it lists lots of primers and sealers, coats and paints but very little instruction on how to actually do it. For instance it will show a tool, a brief description of what it is, and then almost no instruction on how to use it. This book reminds me of old Chilton Automotive manuals, where as it shows you 3 steps but skips 10 others. Unless you already know how to paint a car from beginning to end this book is too fragmented to help much

This book contains a great deal of information that is useful to someone who is a novice in regards to equipment, materials, preparation of surfaces, and painting. All steps are explained in detail with full color photographs. A great resource.

This book showed me the entire process of car painting, from beginning to end. I successfully painted my commuter car that just won't die, two years ago, and the paint job is still looking good!Painting a car, as a novice painter, is a VERY large undertaking (the worse shape the car, the more time it will take). This book does a good job of warning of that, but after doing it myself, I can reiterate how time consuming it can be.The thing that this book is lacking is more talk about paint chemistry, what to look for in a paint, and how to mix the paint. I was able to piece the mixing together by talking to the people at the local PPG store (who seemed to know less than I did, after reading this book). If you're considering painting your car yourself, I would recommend this book - it will give you good insight about how to do it, and gives a realistic picture of how difficult it can be. Just be sure that you're serious about the job, before you take it on.... it's time consuming, detail intensive, and you don't want to be the primer/bondo monstrosities that you see on the street, sometimes.

Never stop the study folks!

Great manual

Good book to learn the entry level knowledge of auto body repair.

After years of using laquer I needed to start the education process on the 21st century paints. It doesn't explain everything (the subject is too complex) but it will educate you sufficiently to ask intelligent questions.

I was hoping to learn more about techniques. This pretty much covered the same stuff you learn by yourself with your first attempt at painting a car.

Excellent introduction to the story of the Rosetta Stone. The author includes photos and engravings which are exceptional. The engravings were created prior to the camera, so the detail is precise. Excellent story about the various persons who attempted to decipher the stone, This is a quick read, great for older elementary and older. This has opened the world of Ancient Egypt....

This is a great option if you're looking for a brief history of the Rosetta Stone. It seems to be written for a younger audience, which was perfect for my 10 yr old. Even I learned several new things by reading it! Includes great images which fit with the story.

Good research potential

This book was for my 11 year old son. It was a little boring for him to read. I think because it was hard for him to understand what he had just read with the black and white photos. He enjoyed the puzzle idea but the book kind of draged out for him.

as expected; good and on time delivery; the book in excellent condition.I am very pleased.

"The Riddle of the Rosetta Stone" is accessible to our 9-year-old would-be Egyptologist with just a bit of vocabulary help from adults, yet is not the least insulting to her parents. This small book, with fewer than 100 pages, largeish type, and many clear illustrations, gives a readable and straightforward account of how the Rosetta stone allowed scholars to understand and even find the pronunciation of a language long after its last speaker was long dead. We learn, for example, that to the ancients, she was "Cleopadra" and not "Cleopatra".There is enough detail to help understand the process, and to convince the reader that the reconstructions are sound. The stone and its translation is put into its historical context, both ancient and modern. This is an admirable, brief, and inexpensive introduction to the subject, and is well-written. The professional will look elsewhere, and the complete greek, demotic, and heiroglyphic texts are available in the inexpensive Dover reprint of E.A. Wallis Budge's "The Rosetta Stone", which I review separately.

The Rosetta Stone, found in Egypt in 1799 by the French but later turned over to the British, contains text written in three alphabets: Greek, Egyptian, and hieroglyphics. Decoding the hieroglyphics on the stone remained a puzzle to many experts for years. This book provides a biography of the stone, describing the contributions made by many linguists that eventually led to deciphering the mysterious symbols.Black and white photographs of the stone as well as portrait illustrations of the men who helped decode the symbols break up the text. The book provides a very informative history of the writing system of ancient Egypt.

This book is an easy read, perfect for ages 8-10. My Mom assigned this book for my study on Egypt, and it helped me understand how the Rosetta Stone was found, and what its importance is. I liked the pictures a lot; they helped me understand who the people were, and what the things looked like. I'm extremly glad I read this book.

This book is great! If you're interested in this book and any other similar books, I suggest getting Quadrivium by Wooden Books. I made the mistake of purchasing this book and 4 others by Wooden Books, as well as Quadrivium and they are all contained in Quadrivium. I repeat, Quadrivium is a compilation of 6 Wooden Books! Buy the compilation and save big $$$

I should have made sure to read ALL the tiny details about this book. It's cool but way too small. I have another book from this company that was pretty huge (Trivium), so was expecting a bit more. Disappointed. I wouldn't have bought it had I known how much content was in here.

Very thin. Shows various sacred geometry symbols. No explanations as to how to draw them. Not detailed. Look into Michael Schneider's "a beginners guide to constructing the universe" if seeking details.

The book has some interesting ideas and history. I had difficulty getting the pages to line up properly, so I was constantly switching pages so I could read the text and see the associated figures. I enjoyed the constructions, but the directions for them were a bit confusing. Fortunately, I have experience with the constructions. I specifically enjoyed and would like to have seen more on the Celtic designs.

I love geometry, and even have a degree in math. I thought this book would be a really nice discussion piece, or display item for coffee table or mantle, but the book is really small. This is my own fault, because the dimensions are listed, but I guess I over-estimated the size regardless. The content is OKAY, I was hoping for crisper, higher quality art, but its still a good purchase.

According to my son, this book is not for beginners or the faint of heart. It is a thin book with TONS of advanced information. He loves it.

one of the most intriguing books that I have read, time and time again. it is as described. I anticipate a vol 2 hopefully in the near future

I bought this book hoping it would be more of a step by step instruction on creating the geometric shapes it describes. It's a small print book with a little history on shapes, and that's all. Was disappointed.

Whose Culture?: The Promise of Museums and the Debate over Antiquities

Review

"In this new collection of essays, Cuno has also assembled a group of broadly like-minded colleagues, both museum curators and academics, all of whom affirm, from a variety of perspectives, why great encyclopaedic collections can, and ought, to exist. . . . [The volume] marks an important advance. After an uncertain, not to say timorous, few decades, the leadership of at least some of our major institutions has found its voice. More than that, it has rediscovered something approaching a set of shared values--and, as Whose Culture? makes clear, it is ready to take on all comers in their defence."---John Adamson, Standpoint Magazine"[Cuno] has emerged as the champion of museums who want to keep their holdings--and not a moment too soon. . . . Cuno speaks the cosmopolitan language of cultural pluralism. The other side, insisting that art remain where it happened to be found, deploys the rhetoric of jealous nationalism in the service of government. Culture matters more than concocted national pride, as curators and museum directors know. At last they're re-asserting their principles, after an embarrassing period of passivity and pusillanimity."---Robert Fulford, The National Post"For the general reader seeking to get up to speed on this critically important debate, this volume is destined to become an indispensable guide. Each contributor makes salient points in favour of their museological argument."---Tom Mullaney, The Art Newspaper"The issues raised will certainly draw controversy and debate, especially in the current environment. Issues of cultural heritage remain targets of ethical, legal, political, and cultural controversies surrounding cultural property. Museum professionals, university scholars, and others deeply interested in cultural heritage will find the work a necessary read." (Choice)"In stressing the multiple meanings--aesthetic, textual, political, ritual--that an object may have, these contributors oppose the claim that art divorced from its archaeological setting is a cosa morta ('dead thing')."---Hugh Eakin, New York Review of Books"A welcome challenge to repatriation policies underpinned by identity politics. . . . Whose Culture? is a long-needed intervention in the debate about the role of museums. Cultural institutions have been on the defensive for decades, poorly firefighting accusations of didacticism, elitism, colonisation and looting, with ill-thought through mumbling and evasion. . . . Museums need to defend openly their use and purpose and make a strong case for the invaluable role they play in the preservation, presentation and study of artefacts. Cuno does just that."---Tiffany Jenkins, Spiked Magazine"Far from being an esoteric, jargon-filled look at a debate between archaeologists and collectors of antiquities, these essays, some from conference presentations, some philosophical, and some impassioned, show that the whose-cultural-property debate runs parallel to and intersects other problem areas in the modern world."---N.S. Gill, About.com"[T]his book should give both sides of the antiquities debate much to think (and talk) about."---William H. Krieger, Religious Studies Review"Whose Culture? makes the strongest case yet for an internationalist approach to the protection and ownership of ancient cultural heritage, and against its nationalization by modern states on political and ideological grounds. Cuno argues that effective measures against the looting of ancient sites do not require exclusively nationalistic ownership, and that a more enlightened international framework would allow cultural heritage to continue to serve an ambassadorial role as a stimulus to artistic and cultural interaction. This book is essential reading for anyone interested in this increasingly important debate."―Timothy Potts, director of the Fitzwilliam Museum, University of Cambridge"This book stands in opposition to widespread claims―primarily from the archaeological community―that museums' collecting of ancient works encourages looting and the illegal trade in antiquities. It thus advances what in the current climate is a sectarian position, but one supported by most museum curators and directors. Given the stature of the editor and distinguished contributors, Whose Culture? presents this perspective at the highest level of discussion."―Bruce Altshuler, director of the Program in Museum Studies at New York University

Events like the leveling of criminal charges by the Italian government against a former curator at the J. Paul Getty Museum and the widespread pillaging of antiquities in Iraq have transformed the longstanding international controversy over who legitimately 'owns' antiquities into a hot topic. This book will provide a basis for informed, intelligent debate."--Jerome J. Pollitt, professor emeritus, Yale University"A balanced and illuminating overview of a hotly contested issue, Whose Culture? focuses on the debate among museum officials, archaeologists, and government leaders about the movement of insufficiently documented antiquities from their countries of origin to international art markets and the museums of other countries. This is a high-stakes problem for all involved and the book offers a multifaceted discussion about the handling of such antiquities now and policy implications for the future."--Jeffrey Abt, author of A Museum on the Verge

This successor to "Who Owns Antiquity?" features essays by scholars who, like Cuno, support encyclopedic museums and advocate an internationalist approach to ownership of ancient cultural heritage. Among them are Kwame Anthony Appiah of Princeton, Sir John Boardman of Oxford, British Museum director Neil MacGregor and David Owen of Cornell.A key issue is unprovenanced artifacts - objects whose original archaeological context is unknown. Many archaeologists say museums should not acquire such artworks, because trade in them encourages looting, theft and illegal exports. Cuno and colleagues disagree, noting that artworks like the impressive Hellenistic sculpture Laocoön and that invaluable key to Egypt's hieroglyphics called the Rosetta Stone could never be acquired or displayed or studied today, given such policies.Owen notes sentiment against unprovenanced artifacts is so intense that the United States, Britain and Germany are campaigning to stop publication of cuneiform inscriptions that have emerged from the Iraqi war zone, sadly unprovenanced but still of potentially great value. Archaeological journals flatly refuse to publish these inscriptions or their translations. Owen brands this "censorship" and "suppression of knowledge."Boardman takes on the "vocal minority" of archeologists who oppose acquisition of unprovenanced ancient art by either collectors or museums. He is astonished by the arrogance of those who consider themselves "absolute guardians of the world's heritage." Boardman says it can be argued that more information has been destroyed by archeologists than by collectors. Also, in his experience, far less than 25 percent of findings of professional archaeologists has been properly published, "and the rest will never get beyond preliminary reports, if that."Other topics of interest in this volume: the Taliban's destruction of the gigantic Bamiyan Buddhas of Afghanistan, and the long-running dispute over Britain's removal of the Elgin Marbles from the Parthenon.[A version of this review appeared in Saudi Aramco World, Mar/Apr 2010.]

THE "UNIVERSAL MUSEUM" OF THE RICH AND POWERFUL., May 1, 2009Cuno ends his introduction to Whose Culrure? with a statement which many of us could easily subscribe to in so far as it appears to be a call for dialogue: "This book will not be the final word in the debate over antiquities. But we hope it will add a new angle to the frame within which the discussion henceforth takes place. Nothing is more important to the fate of the preservation and greater understanding of our world's common ancient past and antique legacy than we resolve the differences that divide the various parties in the dispute. Warfare and sectarian violence, which is destroying evidence of the past faster and more surely than the destruction of archaeological sites by looters, is beyond our control. Differences among museum professionals, university- and museum-based scholars, archaeologists, their sympathizers, national politicians, and international agencies should not be."Clearly museum professionals and other scholars should be able to solve the issues of cultural property if there is goodwill on both sides. But is there? This reasonable appeal should be seen in the context of the recent writings of Cuno and the rest of the introduction. Before this conciliatory appeal, the same author makes this interesting declaration: "It is the purpose of this book to challenge the perception of museums as rapacious acquisitors of ill-gotten goods and to argue instead that our public museums build their antiquities collections responsibly and for the public's benefit. Some readers will be disappointed that not "all sides" of the debate are presented here. It is our view that other books already do this and well enough that we needn't repeat the "both sides of the argument" formula here. And, perhaps more to the point, other books are partisan in opposition to the museum's position as we are presenting it and need to be responded to."The above statement of Cuno sounds like an open abandonment of all pretence to objectivity and impartiality. The mask of impartial scholarship which considers all aspects and views on a subject matter, including the views of opponents, is openly abandoned. Should we follow the author's qualification of the writings of Lord Renfrew as "sensational" and qualify the views in this book as mainly "propaganda", seeing that the editor has admitted abandoning any attempt to consider all sides of the issue of restitution and cultural property?Good consequences could flow from the abandonment of pretence to impartiality and objectivity. This may lead to giving up the pretension that the so-called universal museums - British Museum, Louvre, Art Institute of Chicago and the Ethnology Museum of Berlin are open to the whole world and serve mankind when most people live thousands of miles away from those institutions. Moreover, the governments of the countries where the museums are located are actively making it difficult for outsiders to visit those countries through immigration rules.Perhaps there will soon be the realization that the thousands of Benin bronzes and other cultural objects languishing in the museum depots do not serve mankind. On recognizing the reality they have up to now denied, the museums may be willing to share those artefacts and thus serve humanity. They may then be able to consider, for example, sharing with the people of Benin the Benin Bronzes: Berlin - Ethnologisches Museum 580.Chicago - Art Institute of Chicago 20, Field Museum 400.Cologne - Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum 73.Hamburg - Museum für Völkerkunde, Museum fur Kunst und Gewerbe 196.Dresden - Staatliches Museum für Völkerkunde 182.Leipzig - Museum für Völkerkunde 87.Leiden - Rijksmuseum voor Volkenkunde 98.London - British Museum 700.New York - Metropolitan Museum of Fine Art 163.Oxford - Pitt-Rivers Museum/ Pitt-Rivers country residence, Rushmore in Farnham/Dorset 327.Stuttgart - Linden Museum-Staatliches Museum für Völkerkunde 80.Vienna - Museum für Völkerkunde 167.The Western museums will, with a new realism, perhaps understand that they are not bound to defend the past evils of colonialism and imperialism. They are however responsible for continuing to hold on to ill-gotten artefacts from the colonial period and for refusal even to discuss or disclose the number of items involved. Having liberated themselves from the colonial heritage, the Western museums would no longer need to invent explanations of fantasy to justify the possession of stolen goods. The museums of the Western nations would thus, for the first time, become amenable to the idea of a true "Museum of Mankind" or "World Museum" to which all peoples and States will contribute and thus finally create a truly Universal Museum, in the true sense of universality of governance, contribution and representation. This will not be the kind of imperialist and neo-colonialist museum which is only "universal" from the fact of having thousands of looted/stolen artefacts from the universe but only there to serve a few nations that have since the 17th century dominated mankind and the universe. Some of the authors of contributions seem to have followed Cuno's tone and style by heaping criticisms on their colleagues. Very little room is left for possible compromise. Attacks on Lord Renfrew which go as far as to consider his writings as sensational are clearly not conducive to achieving a compromise on the question of unprovenanced antiquities. The contributions to Whose Culture? seem to have been written a long time ago and therefore could not have taken account of recent events. From this book, there is very little mention of the recent wave of restitutions to Egypt, Ethiopia, Italy, Greece and other countries. As usual, there is no discussion on demands for restitution from other African countries. One cannot help feeling that there is no attempt in this book to offer anything new. Cuno could surely not hope to introduce a new perspective with his introduction that abandons all attempts to understand opposing views and with articles that are several years old. This book is surely not the last word on the debate on restitution and the location of antiquities but one would hope it is the last of its kind. Cuno's recent book, Who Owns Antiquity? (2008) was met with many serious criticisms which have not yet been adequately answered.(65) Thereafter the same author wrote articles that reproduced similar arguments (66). The publication of Whose Culture? (2009) so soon makes us wonder what the real aims of these writings are.Peter Stone, in reviewing Cuno's Who Owns Antiquity? spoke for all of us in the rest of the world, outside the "universal "or "encyclopaedic" museums when he made this statement:"I assume that many will hope and some I know will pray that this book represents the last death throes of a failed traditional world-view: the dominance of the many by the (very) few; the dominance of a Western scientific tradition over all others; the dominance of a closed view clinging, perhaps subconsciously, to what can only be described as colonial oppression. Perhaps if a dinosaur could have written a book arguing against its extinction, it would have read like this".Could this statement also be applicable to Whose Culture? which is a companion volume to Who Owns Antiquity?Kwame Opoku, 1 May, 2009.

I have read the book on the Olmecs & find it great. I have visited the Olmec museum in Villahermosa x2 & find it all very interesting. I am planning to write a novel based on Olmec history & this book has provided some interesting insights on Olmec history. I have not read the rest of the series yet but will review them later when I am finished. This is not a book for students of Olmec history but is a good introduction to the civilization for those just beginning a study or the casual reader. Enjoy

Interesting information. Written concisely and to the point.

What you have here is a series of four books covering pretty much the same area but over a long period of time. Different cultures arose with their own religions, rulers, wars, everyday life and so forth and, eventually, their own downfall. There are a wide variety of relevant topics covered for each civilization, giving the reader a good overview of just what made up the particular groups and how they were similar and, at times, different from the other groups. What is important is that the books are not just filled with information but that information is presented in a manner which is easy to understand.I think it would very interesting if, someday, someone would write a book explanation just why there is such a major difference between these cultures and the Native American cultures. All supposedly are derived from early peoples who crossed over into the Americas from Siberia yet there is very little similarity between the Native Americans and the Mayans, etc. I like it when books like those in this series cause questions to arise about the why of things.

Very informative and accurate accounting of the earliest of civilizations in the Americas. Well worth the read. If you have any interest in the civilizations of Mesoamerica this is an excellent place satisfied your curiosity or establish a foundation for more in depth study of the subject.

the details of The Olmec, Zapotec, Maya and Aztec Civilization were clearly explained.

An informative read about civilizations in Mexico. It was interesting and a great read.

Such an incredible read from Captivating History. This covers the main Mesoamerican civilizations .Lot of study to be done on the Olmec & Zapotec cultures. Much is known of the Aztec & Mayan Civilizations. The one thing to be aware of is the writings of the Spanish conquistadors. Naturally, they would be biased so how much is truthful will be left for historians to decide. What’s so amazing to me is just how these people just came out of the jungle & flourished for a certain time & then vanished back into the jungles . Very advanced cultures who took over other tribes who would then become allies of the Spanish . So there really is no know number of the minor tribes. But, all seemed to come crashing down when the Spanish arrived. Then what was left of these tribes became a footnote in history. The reference section is awesome which leads to further research if one so desires.

The Crocodile Hunter: The Incredible Life and Adventures of Steve and Terri Irwin, by Steve Irwin

From Publishers Weekly

While many U.S. readers will be familiar with Australian Steve Irwin's good-mate/wild-man persona from his smash hit cable show Crocodile Hunter, they may be surprised by the passion and thought with which Steve and his wife, Terri, undertake wildlife conservation work. Neither will fans be bored: this entertaining, exciting autobiography/adventure tale/environmental tract is packed, as advertised, with incredible feats. Steve is son to the man "recognized as the greatest herpetologist in Australia and revered throughout the world as a legend for catching highly venomous snakes" bare-handed. The first section recounts Steve's childhood with his conservation-minded father and mother ("She was the Mother Teresa of wildlife rehabilitation"), who built the Queensland Reptile and Fauna Park, soon enlarged and renamed the Australian Zoo, one of the best zoological facilities in the world. As the park expanded, Steve learned to leap from boats onto the backs of crocodiles of all sizes, capturing them for relocation. The second section is told by Terri, an impressive Oregonian nature lover who was running a wildlife rehabilitation facility when she met Steve on a trip to Australia. While Steve punctuates his writing with phrases like "Holy snappin' duck poo!" Terri offers a calmer perspective on their commitment to wildlife conservation. The final section discusses the Irwins' current efforts at the Australian Zoo: "Our passion for wildlife is our elixir of life and we'll die defending animals that others deem dangerous and threatening." What could have been an easy rip-off of a popular show is a fun, educational read for adults and children alike. Copyright 2001 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

From School Library Journal

Adult/High School-This is a chatty, entertaining romp through some wild adventures, with a touch of romance and some conservation thrown in for good measure. Steve Irwin's parents opened Beerwah Reptile Park in Queensland. Over the years, with the motto "we'll have to learn as we go," the park expanded into Australia Zoo, with the mission statement of "conservation through exciting education." The Irwins are passionate about wildlife. Steve's chapters, the first five, are energetic, enthusiastic, colloquial, and packed with animal encounters. Terri's chapters, the next five, are more restrained but no less interesting. The book is generously illustrated with lots of excellent black-and-white and color photos of flora, fauna, and family. The design is appealing; combined with the topic, it should attract reluctant readers. This book skips over a lot of the dry facts-no birth dates here-and teens will read it for the exciting stories and the insight into the husband and wife in front of the camera.Susan Salpini, Fairfax County Public Schools, VACopyright 2002 Cahners Business Information, Inc.

A great read. If you loved Steve Irwin, and who didn't, this is a great book.

Best book we have bought. Writing, font size and photography all the way through makes this a even better experience

I originally purchased this book because Terri Irwin is from Eugene, Oregon, not far from where I live. She is a lover of cougars, as I am. I have followed her and Steve's careers and lives and still do keep up with what is going on at Australia Zoo. This book was written from both Steve's and Terri's perspective, and that is what makes it so fun. I loaned my book and could never get it back, so I bought another one. Highly recommended for enjoyable reading!

So much incredible information and stories that really make you think. I have already read this book twice, and it doesn't get boring. I highly recommend this book to any one interesting in animal conservation or Steve Irwin's incredible, but sadly short, life. I can't wait to watch some of the documentaries described in this book and get out into the world and make some change. I only wish that Steve was still alive to continue teaching about and showing the world incredible wildlife.

An outstanding read! Just as informative and entertaining as their show. We're saving the book to have it autographed when we finally get to visit Australia. Anyone who enjoys their exploits on television will definitely enjoy a "back-stage" browse through their lives and times. I admire and respect the choices and hard work they've chosen to try and convince humans to care for their environment. Good luck and hope to see more shows on TV in the future. Sara & Daryl Nichols - previously of Eugene, Oregon.

Great story of what one man can do. The Irwins are an inspiration and it's fun to see their passion in their own words.

Incredible book of Steve and Terri Irwin's life.I could not put it down.

It is a great book and add color to a wonderful Life just to bad it is not another 1000 pages as you know it could have been and still been a page turner. I miss no other deceased person more except family. He is one of the first people I hope to meet in Heaven playing with a crocodile.
