The content of this book is great -- but recommend you get it hardcopy, and not on kindle. Read other reviews for content.It is not formatted well for kindle. Extra spaces after apostrophes, paragraph breaks not formatted....something weird. Try to change the font? The font selections are in Asian characters....can't change the font. When the book was downloading, the image had the Japanese notations. You can change the font size, but not the style, and the style is odd. This was a sloppy and careless "make it digital" attempt.So, this book should NOT be purchased via kindle. I like the content, but the display is so annoying that it is distracting. For free, I'd take it. But not for the full price I paid.

Hopefully it will help them understand the differences between their culture and that of the increasingly morally vacuous cultures in too many organizations.One to an extremely effective high school teacher to help him in discussions with students about their career options including the military.One to have as a spare to loanThe book is short, not due to an absence of thought, but rather from the quality of the writing.Camille Paglia recently did an interview with the WSJ (Dec, 2013) in which she noted the absence of military service among Wall Street, big business and political leadership as a potentially deadly threat to our nation.After teaching for a number of years in a leading university's MBA program and decades in business I am convinced that most of our business schools would be far better off sending their faculty off to spend 6 months with the Marines learning about effective, principled and goal oriented leadership. The Marine Gunny with a high school education knows is a far more capable leader and far more capable trainer of leaders than our corporate leadership. The cornerstone of that effectiveness is the Warrior Ethos. No doubt some of Pressfield's disciplined writing skills came from his Marine Corps experience. A great read....... highly recommended.

Parallels are drawn between Spartans of old, Romans, Greeks and even the Samurai of Japan to U.S. Marines and Soldiers. The principle, not simply of armies or those who serve bit the mentality of those special breeds that genuinely live the warrior way of life. This book could be a great read after transitioning out of the military for combat veterans and even current service members. The struggle of reintigrating to a civilian life is difficult and the concept that the ability to endure hardships has simply provided the skills to address these new challenges and battles. Of special interest was the honor of the warrior and his devotion to the "tribe" or team. Great read. I gathered much insight from this book.

This was the most horribly written book I have ever read. I felt like I was reading a 9th graders research paper on right and wrong and they failed to make any valid points or source any work. Each s all paragraph of 2 sentences(which is not a paragraph) were completely different lines of thinking. At first we were reading about a story of Roman Soldiers conversation without any sources or validity that I can find, and then defining what the word ethos means followed bymore stories which have no sourcing and could lack validity. You could say anything happened "In Roman Times" and who would question you? Without providing sources or any more detail like the year this was recorded there is no way to verify without a wild goose chase. On top of this issue you could find nothing to source these stories and comments and the writer could argue you just didn't find them, but I did. Do not buy. Find another book of the reading list if that is why you are looking to purchase this.

The book is a good analysis of warrior cultures across time. With this, the author tries to relate some of the important aspects to modern life, but some of it falls a little flat. Overall an entertaining read if you're into world military history.

Another great book - I have the author's other book as well "Steal like an artist". Love them both!

Kleon has an engaging writing style. His illustrations are cute. He is an able curator of interesting quotations. But this book is mostly devoid of meaningful or useful content. Here is some of the advice you'll receive:- Put your work out there, share it with others regularly- Meet up with people in real life, not just on the Internet- Don't be afraid to make money off your creative work- Keep going- Maintain an e-mail list- Give proper credit when you refer to other people's workI won't spoil the rest--if you do read the book, you'll see that I'm not simplifying anything in that list. He goes into zero detail about *how* you should do any of those things, which leads me to believe that he considers the suggestions themselves as worthy of paid publication. Even as free blog posts, most of these chapters would leave me asking, "And...?" This is a catchy write-up of the most banal common knowledge on the topic.I loved Steal Like An Artist (and still do), but this book was not worth the money or the time I spent on it. Big disappointment. I will probably still buy his next book, but I hope I won't have to return it like this one.

I was required to read this for a college course with a detailed quiz after so I had to read it more than once. I liked the overall general concepts of the book. But they were pretty basic marketing that most people know after a first time google search (have a website, reach out on social media, remind people you exist). Also the cute artsy format worked most of the time (more on that below).Here's what I didn't like:The constant single sentence celebrity name dropping as examples of success being constantly used. I know Kleon's most famous work is "Steal Like an Artist" but I think he could have done without constantly using other peoples words to make a point where his own would have been fine. Even if it was limited to just once per page instead of 2-3 times it would have been less grating. Also the "art" pages would have fit better if they weren't placed in the middle of a sentence so often.

After reading his How to Steal Like an Artist I was eager to read this one as well. This book failed on many levels. Its main focus is internet/social media recognition. Very little on actually showing work. And it is already outdated. The internet/social media world has drastically changed in four years and by following his suggestions your work would most likely be shared and copied and made into memes all outside your realm of ownership. If possible I am returning this book.

Such a fantastic book for creatively minded people! It’s the kind of book that you can pick up and set down over and over again. A good book to have on your nightstand or—dare I say it—in your bathroom. (Yes, I’m a bathroom reader. ) I’d certainly give it away as a gift. It would make a nice graduation present for a budding artist or writer.I constantly over-think my writing. I’m afraid to share my words and feelings with others. I’ve certainly grown as a person over the years, but my journey seems to be three steps forward, two steps back. Yes, I’m making progress. Slowly. SOOO slowly. This book helped me to realize that what I’m doing DOES have value and I appreciate the author reminding me of this!Thank you, Austin Kleon, for sharing your ideas!

This is a refreshing kick in the butt about believing in yourself as a creative person and jumping in with both feet. The basic idea is to put yourself out there even if you (or your work) is a work in progress. This book borrows heavily from the late Paul Arden's "It's Not Who You Are, It's Who You Want To Be." In fact, the author quotes Mr. Arden at one point in the book, but in the page of acknowledgments, he makes no mention of Arden's wonderful book (get it). That's why I dinged this book a star. I do recommend this book if you are at all insecure about your place in the (creative) world, but I also highly recommend Mr. Arden's book, which is a classic and essential (and a shorter read than this).

This book is small and yellow and well designed. If you put two pop-tarts side by side, that is about how big this book is. But don't put this book in the toaster, unless you are a toaster artist and you want to.This book has black text, mostly. Sometimes it has black pages with white text, in which case an absence of ink forms a sequence of letters forming words. There are lots of pages all in a row with text on them.You can read these pages in order, or you can skip around. You can buy this book and never read it. Sometimes I do that too.The tips in this book require you to keep daily habits. If you can't do that, you're probably not going to be a very good art person but maybe you will if you put this book in the toaster and it looks awesome. Don't put this book in the toaster though. You might burn your Mom's house down and she would probably make you buy her a new toaster.

I did it backwards but it worked out just as well. I read show Your Work first and then read Steal Like an Artist second. Whichever you read first, you'll learn and be reminded of five star lessons in creative arts, specifically writing, in my case. Author, Austin Kleon breaks the process of creating art and getting it noticed into small steps. This is a short, fast read with a major dose of powerful ideas. He shows us the reasons for taking each action he recommends. Kleon effectively converses with the reader as if sitting across a table from us in a cafe having a brainstorming session about our art, in whatever form it takes. His ideas are simple but incredibly profound, easy to grasp and put to use. Highly recommended.

I loved this classic. It took a few pages to grab me in the very beginning but once it did I was hooked. If you are as dismayed by the dismaying state of the "real world" this book can be your escape into an entirely different world. That is it's appeal and why it is a much deserved classic. This is story-telling at its finest. it is sometimes easy to be intimidated by "classics", but don't hesitate to dive into this tale as it is not a difficult book. You won't regret it. This is the same writer who wrote Les Miserables, which I also intend to read one day as soon as I can recover from the epic, but rather ham-fisted movie version of a few years ago.

I've loved this book for over 30 years since reading it in my HS Literature class. I bought this Kindle book mainly for Victor Hugo's "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" and Mary Shelly's "Frankenstein" was an extra bonus. I have both books in large heavy hardcover editions and now I can easily take the kindle edition with me anywhere on my Kindle reader or tablet. I also have many other Classics in kindle edition and you can't beat that kind of convenience when reading classic literature. BTW the illustrations look nice on my tablet.

Believing Les Miserables to be a fine work of literature, I undertook the reading of The Hunchback of Notre Dame. One must persist through Hugo's long preliminaries to appreciate the tragedy of the tale. These somewhat tedious preliminaries are integral to the power of the whole. It is well worth the effort. Human nature and human folly are timeless.

Reading the unabridged Hugo is an experience that is unfortunately too rare these days. Here's a real author for you - even if the story is melodramatic, the writing is high art.

Honestly, I knew it was coming since I read the reviews, but I still underestimated how tiresome most of this book is.As other reviewers have said, the actual story of Quasimodo and co. is such a small portion of the book in comparison to the actual length of the work. It was really quite difficult to get through.If you find that the novels you read in high school (think Dracula, Hamlet, Catcher in the Rye, etc.) waxed poetic far too much for your taste, I would maybe look into an abridged version (no shade, that's what I was about to do) instead.Quasi's story is rather good, but it's buried under lengthy descriptions of settings that (in my opinion) did little to enhance the reading.

Good book, but I feel it loses something in the translation. This version seems to make more sense than some of the other versions I took a look at. More straightforward language is used. I have enjoyed it though and recommend it as far as the story goes.

If you watched Disney's "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" you do not know this story at all. It is completely different, and in a good way. Victor Hugo is a master storyteller. He introduces plotlines that twist and turn and you think "Why is he telling me this? Why all this exposition?" And then everything ties together in a crazy climax. It is gutwrenching. One of the most tragic stories ever written. Just read it, it's a classic.

"The Hunchback of Notre Dame remains a classic for good reason. The many concurrent themes of good vs. evil, appearance and reality, the hypocrisy of the social order and political hierarchy, and the power of the human spirit converge in the story of Quasimodo and Esmeralda. For those who have not read the book, I highly recommend it. This book is a wonderfully readable 19th century novel with immortal characters and a bittersweet plot line.

I can't begin to say now awesome this book was, and how much I so needed to read such a story as this!! Everything I've gone through myself in my past relationships, I wasn't sure if the Lord could still write a love story for me. Now I know without a doubt, that He can and He will, thanks to Cheryl sharing her true story how God did just that for her! She allowed Him to take control, and the result was absolutely amazing and inspiring! Men, you also would do well to read this book, especially thanks to Chris, Cheryl's husband giving very sound advice on how to prayerfully pursue the right woman God wants you to have in your life. I myself am now excited to see what God does this coming year in my life...waiting on Him no longer will be a chore, but a privilege, and I know that the end results will be exactly the way God always wanted it to be for me. Read, pray, get inspired from Cheryl's story, and get ready to see what God will do in your life, as you wait on Him to write our your own love story!

i've only read 3 chapters so far and they were spot on. they were exactly my feelings in areas. they were not eye opening revelations. it's stuff i have heard/read before but she has lived it. a lot of people who teach on marriage and singleness are not p[over 35yrs old and still waiting for a spouse. she was funny and open and honest. i really loved the chapter that her husband wrote. but i started with Chapter Four: I Must Be Defective then i skipped to Ch. 17 his finally where her husband talks about his journey of waiting- must read ladies and gents, then i read the first chapter. i might up it to 5 starts after i finish reading it. but i was so encouraged by this book.i finished it and wow the pitfalls she endures. love her honesty. love her repeated statements to PRAY, PRAY, and PRAY.first pray to see if it's god's will for you to even be married. then pray to surrender to his will. then pray for guidance EVERY step o f the way, every relationship, every friendship,, .etc.basically unless you have a close relationship with God, pray a lot, and know the Word you can't mimic her journey.great book!

I have read a LOT of relationship books over the years and I have found the most comfort in those books written from a Christian perspective. Let's face it: because times have changed there are lots of women (and men!) who just can't seem to meet the right person. If you are a God-fearing, church going, sold-out for Christ, Bible-reading, Rosary-praying, no-sex-outside-of-marriage committed Christian (whew!) it ain't easy. It isn't IMPOSSIBLE but it isn't easy. I have intermittently given up over the years but then something pulls me back from the abyss. Oddly enough, I had just finished my quiet time with God when I went onto Amazon.com because I was thinking about getting another book--not a how-to book on dating or finding a man or anything like that. Rather, I was looking for a book about WAITING. After all, that's the season I'm in and have been in for a while. I was seriously considering purchasing two other books when this book showed up in my visual field. It was FREE and it had amazing reviews. Nuff said. I downloaded the book on Friday night. But Sunday afternoon, I was finished.What an amazingly true account of what it's like to be a single Christian woman who feels totally forgotten by everyone, even God on occasion. The author was extremely candid and shared her personal struggles. I could definitely relate to her dialogue with God. In the end, the author met the man God was preparing for her. The book ends with her husband sharing his *own* struggles as a single Christian man also in a prolonged waiting phase. He describes his emotional journery during their courtship and what God revealed to him along the way.I say this book changed my life because I believe this was a message from God to me. The author talks a lot about "signs" in the book. I don't expect much in the way of signs from God, but I do think He speaks to us in subtle ways. This book gave me a renewed sense of hope. No, there's no magic answer to this whole relationship thing, but I believe beyond a shadow of a doubt that God is involved in the process of who our spouse should be and if we "surrender the pen" as the author says countless times, God will write a beautiful love story. I don't know about you, but I'm a hopeless romantic and God is probably the biggest Romantic there ever was. I only wish I had a local group of Christian women to discuss this with because it is SO rich. So for anyone in a waiting season and struggling, check this book out and consider surrendering this area of your life. Yes, it is scary. And there's a little doubt in the back of your mind that it will ever really happen. Just keep speaking the Word over your barren situation and believe. Don't forget to thank God for what He's doing. Remember, when you sow a seed, a lot is happening under the surface that you can't see with your naked eye.

This book reads like a journal at parts, as well as your standard relationship book. It's comic and yet has deep spiritual truths and encouragement. It was written very authentically and I'm glad the author's willingness to share so much that was happening in her life while she wrote, was rewarded with being able to share such a detailed story of God's answer and provision in response to her prayers.I have a lot of books about relationships from various angles, topics and issues. Though the highly personal aspects does set it apart, I probably did not glean any information I didn't know before in some manner. What's different about this book is that it's really rare, in my experience, to have an author who will write directly and bravely out of the experience of being a Spirit-filled believer, i.e. one who knows that all the gifts of the Spirit are real and active today and embraces them. The written word of God in the bible is the foremost and main thing of course; but, as someone who has also experienced prophetic words, dreams, and other external confirmations through other believers, it was nice to see this reflected in a book. There are lots of us out there and it's nice to be able to relate.

I read this book cover to cover and then used Pain Management Nursing Exam Flashcard Study System from Mometrix Test Preparation to study for the certified pain management exam. These 2 things are all you need to pass the test. The only thing I didn't like about this book is that it's in outline format instead of paragraph form. Sometimes it was confusing to follow.

It is sort of hard to believe that the glowing reviews aren't from friends of the author. I was very disappointed with this book. Darrin is so self-confident and self-adulating throughout, as if he has invented something new with his "Percentage Racquetball" technique. In truth, the namesake chapter occupies only a few pages in the middle of the book, and otherwise it seems to be a typical racquetball book, covering everything from basic grips and strokes, to shot selection. However, compared to other texts I have, he really does not do a great job of describing shot mechanics. He just seems to leave out some details that a beginner or aspiring intermediate might not understand. Furthermore, while stating in his introduction that this book is for any player, he uses terminology, such as court terms, without definition. There is no glossary, and no index. Perhaps most insulting of all, the print is large, with big spaces between lines. Many pages are virtually blank, and the diagrams are amateurish. It looks as if he intentionally padded the pages to increase the page count. I can't blame him for promoting himself; he may be the only one to do so. My favorite in-print books: Winning Racquetball (Turner/Clouse) for the beginner, and Championship Racquetball(Davis/Mannino) for intermediate/advanced.

I read this book when it first came out several years ago and once again recently with the revisions and I have to say it is great for getting you to think about the basics. We all develop bad habits and this book helps you break that chain. It worked for me. I highly recommend it to anyone of any skill level. Great book!

...pure and simple. Darrin does a great job explaining how percentage racquetball works, and (while we will all make mistakes that lead to losing) how the system itself never fails. This book starts at the mechanics of making a good game, and goes forward from there all the way up to fitness for the game itself. Completely worth the read, there isn't a better book out there for this game.

I had been playing racquetball for several years before came across this book. The book made me realize that most racquetball players (including myself) spend most of our time playing without a clear strategy and trying to hit impossible shots. No wonder it was so easy for me to get frustrated. Darrin's percentage system helped me simplify my grossly convoluted racquetball style. It taught me to hit simple, easy shots; and I now find myself playing calm and under control, and consequently winning a lot more rallies. This book is an excellent resource for the beginner player, and also has some excellent tips for the semi-veteran like me who needs to start thinking more and running less.

Darrin Schenck presents a unique method of demonstrating proper technique through the use of Exclusive Flip-Book Technology. Do you remember making flip-book animations in grade school? Percentage Racquetball contains short video clips in the lower-right corner of each page that are easy to review on the racquetball court. Forward or backward, slow-motion or in real time -- it's fun, simple and effective. A must read!

I've read the pre-published version of this book and it's hands down the most informative well written instruction to Racquetball that I've ever read. The author is very descriptive and through. I've been able to incorporate some the "play smart" not "hard" tips that Darrin offers. Before being introduced to this book I was over swinging everything and my form was off. It's a must have for the beginner/intermediate or the veteran player that has developed years of bad habits.

After putting the principles taught in this book to use, I can proudly say that my racquetball game has risen a number of levels. Mr. Schenck eloquently describes the necessary steps a competitive player needs to take to improve their game. Regardless of the type of player you are, this book will help you continually move toward achieving the skills and the mindset needed to be a top player.

this is a great book for biblical counselors who need to learn how to see their own sin 'with new eyes' and in turn help others see theirs... the x ray questions on chapter 7 is worth the price of the book alone... these are fabulous questions to get to the root of what is really going on and they are great questions as they are and easily modifiable if you need or want to customize them (which i highly recommend).. greate book.

So far in my life, this is the most helpful book I've read, and I count it as my favorite. Powlison is relatable and so still as he writes, and the words really go deep. They sit on truths in meditation that are impacting to core of who we are. Powlison exposes where profession denies true belief, and he gives clear, scripture-breathed meditation to the deepest struggles we have. The topics can seem so intimidating at first glance, raising current culturally approved psychoanalytic and therapeutic theories. Yet, when you get into how Powlison addresses these, it returns to sounding like the scripture we're so familiar with, and we can fall in line his thinking easily and be refreshed. This book hits the mark, and it lands squarely on God Himself as our rescue, our means, our hope, and our reward. If you want to counsel, this book is not a bad starting place.

"Seeing with New Eyes" is the first volume in Powlison's proposed three-volume set on Christian counseling. This first volume he sees as providing the theological foundation for understanding psychological issues from a spiritual, biblical perspective.The "new eyes" are the eyes enlightened by faith in Christ and restored to sight by confidence in the sufficiency of Scripture to explain life and relationships. "Seeing with New Eyes" offers a theological-intellectual defense of "Nouthetic Counseling" as a biblical counseling model seeking to understand truth about God and humanity through God's eyes as revealed in Scripture.It is an excellent introduction by perhaps the leading theologian in the Nouthetic Counseling movement. However, the book is also a compilation of many previous articles by the author. Thus at times it reads more as a string of excellent artilces than a tightly woven and thematically consistent book. Having read many books from the usual secular self-help and Christian counseling scene this book really shattered most of their half-truths and revealed the wonder of the cross in a totally different light.I don't think I've ever felt as challenged about my views and motives nor as in absolute awe of what Christ's death on the cross as was revealed by this book. Unlike many books this is not one big idea padded out, this is real meat as each chapter addresses different aspects of our psychology with the sharp blade of scripture.I just hate it when you're taught things at church and by well meaning Christian friends that are actually so against the beauty of the cross and our ongoing sanctification. I loved that Powlison addressed much of the popular advice and how their small presuppositions lead people off track on big matters. If there's anything this book will do it won't let you finish it with your pride intact.I would say if you want to know what counseling that is empowered by understanding the bible, God's character and our place in his scheme then this book is my suggested starting point.For the sake of your ministry, even if you're just a member of a church, please read this book!

This was my first Henri Nouwen book I have ever read, and I've never felt more connected to another author in my entire life. Every entry he wrote, I felt like he was pulling it straight from my heart. I now have been collecting his writings and I continue to feel that way. He has such a way of connecting with anyone and everyone who is struggling with depression, faith, etc. I bought more copies so I can give them to friends. It's an easy read, each "chapter" is short, and you don't necessarily have to read it in any particular order. It's phenomenal. Get it!

Henri Nouwen puts into words what we think and feel. It is a remarkable gift. I am amazed at how an intellectually brilliant man can write with such simplicity yet profoundness. I cannot say enough about him and his writings. Very few can combine academic erudition and human suffering. This comes from absorbing both worlds, a destiny not common to many. This books describes his darkest hour, and it speaks to those of us who have travelled a similar path.He frames truth and pain in uncommon ways. It shows that he has thought deeply about his struggles, both with God and man. If you have travelled a season of spiritual anguish, then you will identify with Nouwen. His thoughts will give you hope and courage to continue the journey. It can be read in one day, but should be read a chapter a day. After this, I highly recommend you read his book "Reaching Out".

Nearly 21 years after his death, Henri's life and writings continue to inspire me along with many countless others. Even though he was a Catholic and I am a Protestant, his understanding of God and closeness to Him tells me that I have many more things to learn about God the Father. I have read some of Henri's other works, and have watched him speak on YouTube. He was an amazing man and I am grateful that I have discovered his work. In this particular book, Henri lays wide open the pain in his soul as he struggled with his humanity. You can almost hear him quote Jesus, as the Lord faced his impending death: "My God, My God, why have you forsaken me?" I am grateful that his colleagues talked him into sharing these deeply personal writings with us; it gives me hope that I too can weather the storms of life.

I love to read. You already know that about me. I always say after reading a book, "It'll change your life." I'd never heard of Henri Nouwen up to that point.It's taken me almost 3 months to get through this book. It has wrecked me emotionally and spiritually in good ways.It's opened my eyes to toxic thoughts and emotions I've believed about myself and others.Nouwen's words have brought me to my knees in repentance for relying more on relationships and validation than the love of God.It took me 3 days to journal through one paragraph.He says in the introduction.."Everything came crashing down - my self-esteem, my energy to live and work, my sense of being loved, my hope for healing, my trust in God... everything. Here I was, a writer about the spiritual life, known as someone who loves God and gives hope to people, flat on the ground and in total darkness.Just when all those around me were assuring me they loved me, cared for me, appreciated me, yes, even admired me, I experienced myself as a useless, unloved, and despicable person."Yes... Yes... It's like he was sitting right beside me knowing exactly what I was feeling.Nouwen's words brought me to a more intimate place with Christ. A place I was and still am desperate for.This book... I have so much to say, yet it has left me speechless. I will go back to it time and time again through my life, no doubt.I leave you with these words..."God loves me. God's love is enough. This is essential Nouwen: spiritually rich, honest, theologically sound. It is meant to be read, reflected on, and prayed with in small pieces. He leads us into deep waters of a wide range of feelings, his own spiritual journey, and how God both accompanies and draws us even deeper. This is a book that is spiritual friend -- meant to be encountered over and over. It nourishes and feeds the soul.

All of Nouwen's works are uplifting and outstanding. This one, however, dares you to find a relationship with God, and God alone. Stripped of all distractions and relationships, Nouwen finds a deeper well of joy in his relationship with God and with others. He also finds an inner peace he didn't know was possible. This is one of those books that you can read over and over and still find new ideas and spiritual insights every time you read it.

This book contains a series of small packets of words that Henri was led to by his guides during his low period that served as daily meditations to lead him from darkness to light. Some profoundly rang true to me as what I needed to be seeing for my healing.I will read it again and again, if not the entire book but those "chapters" that resonate with me.This is a healing book that I would highly recommend to anyone who has wounds to heal and I am pretty sure that includes all of us!

As I read this book, one chapter at a time, I felt as if it could have been written about my own torment. Nouwen captures the essence of the struggle of the dying and death of ego as we go through the dark night of the soul in such a way that it could be anyone's story. The light and hope he gives the ordeal spoke directly to me and gave me the assurance that I am not alone in my struggles and desires.
