I had to read the book "Night" for school and loved it. Great book

The Night Trilogy consisted of three separate books like the title says, but what makes the book interesting is that all three books are from a different point of view. The three perspectives not only show what occurred during the holocaust, but also what events occurred after, and the effects it had on many survivors. The author also uses a lot of figurative language to illustrate the story, making it more lifelike. He also uses different styles for each novel and making each unique. In the first novel the story is non-fiction and in chronological order, while the other two uses flash back and is fictional, so you get to learn more about the character and connect with them throughout the story. Overall I thought this book was very intriguing and I would recommend this to everyone.

This book is really a great, mind blowing, heart jerking read. Elie Wiesel is a great writer and I was happy to watch him on Oprah, just to see who he was.

In 2006, Ford brought in Alan Mulally to help rescue Ford Motor Company from itself. Mulally’s first task was to change Ford’s management style from “every man for himself” to “every man for Ford”. Ford management’s transition from hiding problems (so you didn’t get fired) to acknowledging problems (so you could fix them) could only happen as the braver managers took the leap of faith that Mulally wouldn’t fire them for admitting the serious problems that existed within their own areas of responsibility. Reading about that process was interesting on its own; but, as I was reading, I was also thinking “these guys don’t yet know that the Great Recession is coming”. That event took the drama of Ford’s attempts to survive its past missteps to a whole new level. Wonderful, interesting and exciting book about Alan Mulally, Ford Motor Company, the auto industry and corporate America.

Growing up in the Detroit area I've seen Ford both at their best and their worst. Their incredible transformation over the last decade was nothing short of incredible. This reads more like an intrigue novel than a history lesson and really holds your attention. This, combined with Once Upon a Car and Taken for a Drive are some of the best auto industry books I've ever read.

I have to confess that this book was a complete stunner. I purchased it hoping to get a decent idea of what Ford went through during the economic crisis of 2006-2009, but this book proved to be a detailed, engrossing story that I could barely put down. Anyone who follows the news is well aware of the debacle that was the US auto industry in 2007, but Hoffman provides such depth in describing the issues facing the industry and the corporate in-fighting that it almost reads like fiction.You are instantly endeared to Bill Ford as a man that can put aside his own ego for the good of the company he loves, and you root for Alan Mullaly throughout the book even though we already know Ford made it through to the other side. His belief in his system and his ability to completely change the corporate culture of a multi-national company are truly inspiring.Outside the story itself, there are all sorts of interesting factoids to be found such as how the common stock was set up to ensure the Ford family maintained voting rights, and how neither Chrysler or General Motors would've survived if President Obama had stuck to President Bush's original requirements. The book delivers on so many different levels. I highly recommend to anyone with an interest in business or just an interest in a great story.

Author Bryce Hoffman details the incredible American comeback story of Ford Motor Company. His focus is largely on Alan Mulally, whom Ford hired away from Boeing in September 2006 to take over as their New CEO. Hoffman chronicles the events leading to Bill Ford's decision to step down as CEO and go outside the company and the auto industry to hire Mulally.The author describes the changes Mulally made to Ford's corporate culture as well as the approach he took to changing the mentality and necessity to work together for the survival and future of the company. Hoffman narrates the risks the company had to take to be able to keep it running. I especially relished the narrative of the three auto industry CROw's appearance before the Congressional and Senate hearings on the fall of 2008, when General Motors and Chrysler were asking for a federal bailout to keep those two automakers alive.Hoffman takes the reader into 2011 at a time when Ford was back in the black and on much stronger ground. He gives Mulally much of the credit for this amazing turnaround, but also praised Bill Ford and the other heirs of Henry Ford. Hoffman gives credit to many others within Ford for their courage and contributions to the comeback. This was the most interesting and enlightening books I've read about the American auto industry.

I'm enjoying reading about Alan Mulally.CEOs, CFO's, COOs, mid-level managers and especially consultants--there's something for everyone in this book.Some of my favorite points:1. Bill Ford was humble and willing to step away and letting someone else take over. He was great in keeping the family unified during thick and thin.2. What can we say about Mulally that hasn't been written elsewhere? I loved reading about the BPR process and his One-Ford strategy. He didn't just clean house either. He made a change here and there. A couple leaders left on their own. A couple were elevated. There's much we can learn about Mulally's leadership style.3. The bailouts - I found myself getting frustrated as I re-lived the bailouts of GM and Chrysler. Ford was at a complete disadvantage once the government took control of GM. Yet, Ford stuck to their plan.4. And speaking of that recession, it's as though Mulally had to navigate not one, but two turnarounds.That one and their serious issues when he first came on board in 2006.5. We know the rest of the story. Mark Fields is now the new CEO. Mulally embraced his abilities from day one. So this has a great ending. The fire didn't go out through a changing of the guard.I'm still amazed at how one person could change a leviathan in a stodgy industry. Sure, he built a team and had the full support of the Chairman. But this guy was/is unreal.I thought Gordon Bethune was legendary. I think Mulally's accomplishments are even more impressive since he turned around Boeing too.I also recommend the Audible version too as I listened to it while reading the Kindle version.

Despite this or because of it , I highly recommend it to folks interested in what happens in Combat , especially the friends and family members who may not understand why Daddy flinches when a car backfires or why he constantly has his head on a swivel.He takes you into an F-18 and the pilot’s brain Housing group , where there are life long consequences to dropping ordinance.On a different Story he takes you along to the Brotherhood of FMF Corpsmen who love their Marines so much that they willingly RUN into firefights whilst their Grunt Marines lay prone supressing.He takes you into a mature Platoon Commander tour , where within days the Red Legs accidentally waste an entire compound of Women and Children in Afghanistan. The reality is that after the action , FMF Docs and Marine Grunts sort through body parts to prepare the bodies for burial.The author is unapologetic when describing the disconnect from Senior Officers who have no clue what their own Young MEN are doing. Like the 0-6 who would NOT step out until he had Two Apache’s to protect his cowardly self.The author has a gift and I a.m so blessed to discover this work.SFMF

I enjoyed this book very much. It’s really one of the best non-fiction works to come out of our present war era. Not only does it tell us the stories of real-life warriors, many of them over multiple deployments to The Sandbox, but it doesn’t sugar-coat their experiences.Chivers tells these warriors’ stories – grunts, pilots, the gamut – in a way that is both engrossing while at the same time very revealing of the flaws in our current military doctrine.He doesn’t hit you over the head with it. This is still primarily a book about the people, not the policies. But when you read about their experiences, you can’t help but get an understanding about why this war – particularly in Afghanistan, America’s longest war – isn’t progressing to any discernible conclusion.As a Vietnam vet, I’m very aware of the factors that led to our losing of that war. Primarily, a war doctrine that was doomed to failure, compounded by political complications as well as meddling and micro-management by high-ranking poobahs back in the rear with the gear, as we used to say.As you read this book, it becomes clear that many of those same Vietnam-era problems exist now in these wars, particularly the grossly flawed COIN (Counter Insurgency) doctrine that leads to ridiculously constrained ROEs (Rules of Engagement).Once again we have politicians in DC dictating how the front-line troops have to fight, with the political top military brass being their willing accomplices. Instead of Westmoreland, you have McChrystal, for example. Both relied on war doctrine that, in my opinion, has zero chance of actually WINNING a war.And if you’re not going to fight a war to actually win it, you shouldn’t fight it at all.This is a problem that derived from both Bush and Obama. Neither one had a clue about what was at stake in The Sandbox, nor how to fight and win a war there, and Bush’s idea of “nation-building”, particularly in the Middle East, was founded on wishful thinking rather than any kind of realistic appraisal or understanding of the region. It was unicorn time.The results are pretty clearly illustrated in this highly-recommended book. Get it. Five stars.

If you cant decide whether this story is for you read CJ Chivers excellent article The Fighter which clearly lays the groundwork for this longer expose about the trials and tribulations of fighting two wars in distant parts of world with limited international support, shifting political priorities and peoples who don't necessarily want us there. This is not a happy book. This is not a book for those who cant handle ugly truths or difficult facts. While I could maybe argue with a couple points of some of his political summaries in between chapters as *arguably* emphasizing wrong points, or leaving out a salient fact or two, or maybe even reaching a different conclusion then I would have there is nothing that seems spun or objectively wrong. Even minor points I might disagree on, they are points that reasonable people might disagree on, not completely made up or fudged or anything seemingly or patently false. This is mostly and objective look at 2 wars we've been fighting for nearly 16 years with little fan fare and the effect its had on some of the military members who fought it.If this book has an agenda its probably showing how little we've actually accomplished, how better or worse off the countries are for that action, how much money we've spent, and how definitely worse off a lot of the men and women who fought are. I might disagree with some of the conclusion, or argue that in a more global strategic sense these conflicts did accomplish something, but there is no arguing that this paints a realistic picture of the hardship and difficulty United States of America Servicemen and Women face during their deployments and continue to face long after they return home. We as country need to take more responsibility for helping those brave soldiers, marines, airmen and sailors once they return home by making it easier, faster and more accepted to get treatment for a wide host of potential issues that can surface sometimes years later. Suffering from or talking about PTSD and other issues doesnt make a person weak, it makes them human. Whatever you think of the wars were involved in, support our vets. I for one am a proud supporter of the Wounded Warrior Project, but there are a lot of equally fantastic organizations to choose from.

If this was a porno it would have been made by a woman and for a woman. Seriously though if you’re even thinking about giving this back ok a shot I strongly recommend it.

John Howe is such a masterful artist and illustrator that everything from sketches to full painting reveal his passion to create images to haunt, invite and thrill readers into the worlds hewn to such clarity of purpose that it's hard to resist falling into them from time to time.This is worthy of ANYONE'S bookshelf, from readers of the fantastic, artistic reference and certainly for Tolkien readers of all types. some might quibble with the small samples of finished paintings but the drawings more than make up for it, like life studies of places he managed to visit while we can only read about them.

John Howe's work depicting J.R.R. Tolkien's Middle-earth is instantly recognizable, not only because he worked beside Peter Jackson in bringing The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit to film, but also for the beauty and drama of his art. A Middle-earth Traveler is described as a "walking tour" of Tolkien's world, and indeed it does resemble the sketchbook of an artistic wanderer who delights in capturing quick images of the landscapes and people he observes. Some of the sketches later evolve into finished paintings, but many remain in their original rough but very beautiful states.The book is divided into many chapters primarily dealing with landscapes and peoples from the Third Age of Middle-earth, with occasional glances back at earlier days in Valinor, Beleriand, and Numenor. I enjoyed Howe's landscapes, which are usually rendered in muted tones evocative of morning mists. I also liked his detailed architectural drawings, from hobbit holes to elven flets to massive stone fortifications in Gondor and Mordor. His depictions of hobbits, men, dwarves, elves, and orcs are admirable as well. While it is true that no one artist can completely satisfy every reader of works as complex and beautiful as those of J.R.R. Tolkien, John Howe along with Alan Lee, Ted Nasmith, and a very few others at work today come closest to creating an artistic vision which matches the literary vision of Tolkien himself.

If you're a fan of middle earth art, this is worth adding to your collection. John writes like an academic and takes the reader to all sorts of places they might not be familiar with if their only experience is with the movies that he worked on. He is very talented with his pencils. My only complaint might be that some of the paintings (i.e. not drawings) are quite dark and difficult to see in anything less than a very well lit room - I'd have been happy with John leaving the paintings out & sticking entirely to drawings. Still, that doesn't stop this from being one of the finest art books I own & an excellent companion to Alan Lee's excellent LOTR Sketchbook.

I knew this book should be great but it's AMAZING!! I have already sketchbook by Alan Lee, which is great, but this one I like even more. It contains not only in pencil sketches but paintings also. Lot's of inspiration for an artist or a fan of fantasy.

I love John Howe's work but this book has two serious problems. First, it's riddled with typos and misspellings which I could look past but the second, poor print quality, I can't. The color images are so dark they are almost as clear as viewing the Mona Lisa placed at the bottom of a vat of molasses while wearing welding goggles. The pencil drawings that make up most of the art are the opposite. They are very light and almost uniform in their grey color this losing a lot of shadow and contrast. This makes the detail difficult to discern. Maybe I got a bad run? Haven't had a chance to reference another copy so don't know.

This is a wonderful book. Very similar in format and size of the Alan Lee's Lord of the Rings Sketchbook.The illustrations and sketches are wonderful as you would expect from any drawing made by John Howe.The only bad thing about this book is that I wish this book cuold be bigger, so it could have bigger drawings to be able to see all the details of John Howe's great artwork. Althoug the majority of illustrations are pencil drawings, the print of some colored ones are too dark and too small. Anyway, I would recomend this book to any John Howe admirer or Lord of the rings fan.

I have been a fan of all things Middle-earth since I was 13 years old, and feel John Howe's art does the best at capturing the look and feel of that magical place and/or its people with the exception of J.R.R. Tolkien himself. A Middle-earth Traveler and Tolkien: Maker of Middle-earth are must have books.

I don't know anything about Middle Earth but my daughter now wants to buy this book for herself since this one is a gift for another person. She was surprised at the detail and what is included. Great find!

Once the method becomes clear your brain starts to boggle. Why have I been working for so long when methods such as this are available?David produces proof via his trading account statement that these methods can return much greater returns than any term deposit account, to my mind triple of what's currently available (2014 ). And even in a flat market, No, especially in a flat market.What's more extraordinary is the risks can be about the same as a term deposit account if a little thought is applied.I have seen Seminars advertised, to teach would be traders these methods, for hundreds of dollars.I have read this book twice already and am planning on a third reading shortly.Thouroughly recommended for any would be Capitalist.I feel I need to pay for this book twice for the three legged position. ( hint, nothing to do with sex )

I am an option trader with 3 years of trading experience, and I am thoroughly alarmed after reading this book.Here are my criticisms:1. Lack of ClarityTwo problems here: name, and explanation of the strategy. Mr Funk insists to call his recommended strategy "the three-legged position". OK, everyone is entitled to create their own pet names, but it would have been useful to tell the reader what the rest of the market calls this strategy - it is "Covered Strangle Writing" or "Covered Short Strangle".More serious than Mr Funk's refusal to come clean about the name of his recommended strategy, is his failure to explain the WHYs of this strategy. Now the common use of Covered Short Strangle is to generate income, and this is discussed at some length in the book. However, there is no discussion about the relative merits of this strategy compared to other income-generating option strategies, such as Covered Call.More dishearteningly, Mr Funk creates a twist in the standard Covered Short Strangle to devise a capital-appreciation strategy. Would a traditionally income-generating strategy be effective as a capital-appreciation strategy ? How does it compare to other capital-appreciation option strategies ? No discussion. Why does he recommend the sale of deep-in-the-money put options ? No explanation.In short, we get good clear details of the mechanics of his recommended strategy, but zero explanation as to WHY he recommends each part of this strategy.2. Fuzzy discussion of RISKSNo where in this book can we find a risk chart that shows clearly at what price ranges will this strategy make or lose money, and by how much. You need to read the book very carefully to deduce (yes, deduce - because Mr Funk does not spell it out clearly) that it will make money when the stock price moves strongly upwards.Furthermore, Mr Funk only glancingly discuss risk management. What to do if the stock price moves down instead .. ? Well, don't forget to set your stop-loss at 20%. That is it. There isn't even any explanation whether the stop loss should be applied to all three positions (the stock, the short put and the short call options), or just the stock.So, the blurb in the front cover "Benefit from both up and down markets" is misleading. This strategy will hurt on the way down, and for the capital-appreciation variation (with deep in the money short put) it will hurt when the stock price is moving sideway too!!3. Zero discussion on the strategy's disadvantagesReading through this book, you will think that this strategy has no weakness at all. Let's refer to what other leading option experts have to say about it:"Very high risk and capped reward. Not recommended." (Guy Cohen, "The Bible of Options Strategies", 2005, p. 305) He goes on to say that while this strategy generates better yield compared to Covered Call, it is also substantially riskier, "the position can become loss-making at approximately double the speed as a simple Covered Call position" (p. 52)."So a covered strangle - which is a covered write and a naked put - is equivalent to selling two naked puts. Therefore, it would be more efficient to just sell two naked puts rather than bother with the covered strangle write." (Lawrence G. McMillan, "McMillan on Options", 2004, pp 76-77) He goes on to say that simply selling two naked puts will bring lower collateral requirements, lower commision costs and avoid having to deal with three bid-asked spreads.Every option strategy has a weakness; so this book's silence on this very important subject makes it a serious DANGER to your financial health.
