Received my book on Sunday. I was so excited to get into it until I realized the introduction was out of order.

A great book.

Good book

I found the book very basic. That does not mean it's bad. Just not as progressive as I had hoped. First year coaches will get some basic information that will be helpful; more experienced coaches probably already know what's written.

This book helps take the herding cats element out of coaching Little League Baseball. Gives structured practices that are still fun; describes skill drills for the child who needs to develop or increase skills; allows a coach to "coach up" the good player and tells how to instruct the learner. If you can read, if you too are a learner, if you have patience (and a little bit of catnip), you can learn to coach Little League Baseball.

As a first time manager I didn't have this book to help me. I discovered it when I signed up to take another team and needed some insight. This book provided those ideas on how to manage the kids, the parents/relatives/well-meaning friends, and the league. I highly recommend this for those considering taking on a managing role in kids development through Little League.

Love itGreat help, just what I needed.

This book is outstanding and obviously written by someone who knows what he is talking about. My only comment is that it is not only for Little League baseball but any baseball program for youth such as Pony/Colt, Dixie league and others. Other than the rules that are unique to the Little League organization, the rest of the book is applicable to nearly any program. His recent update is even better. As a former Umpire in these programs I was particularly impressed in his comments about that part of the program. Strongly recommend this book to both coaches, parents and players.

This is an incredibly informative and useful book! It is at once a travel guide and a primer on the history and culture of this fascinating South American nation. The author has spent time living in both Paraguay and the United States, and provides many useful suggestions as well as her extensive knowledge about and deep passion for this beautiful country. Consulting this guide made our week-long trip to its capital city, Asuncion, so much easier, tastier, and more enjoyable! If you are considering going to Paraguay, I definitely encourage you to read this book first.

I hate to think of all the mistakes that I would have made planning my trip if I had not bought this book.It is a must.4/04/2014After reading the book, and starting to plan my trip the only wish I have is that the maps should have more resolution. I find that when you try to increase the size so as to read the names on the maps, it is not much use because of the low resolution. I also have the book in my Kindle dx,(which I plan to take with me) but still have trouble reading the maps.PLEASE update this book with better cuality maps. Then it would be a five star.14/09/2014Thanks to this book my wife and I had a well planned and enjoyable trip. The bus information was very usefull. Off course we saw the Itaipú power plant and the Iguazu falls, but I hate to think that if I had not read this book I would not have known about the cheap trip up the Paraguayan river in the "Aquidaban" boat. Although the bathrooms were not nice, this boat trip was one that allowed us to really get to mix with the local people.(We speak Spanish) This boat trip provided us with the best memories of Paraguay.

Got my copy this past weekend and have been engrossed in going thru it ever since. Having a wife who is Paraguayan and having visited Paraguay over a dozen times in as many years, I have always been frustrated by the poor quality and quantity of available information on the country. It has always been a daunting task trying to gather travel information or decent accounts of what Paraguay is really like. Most "guidebooks" for this country are usually not much more than a chapter within a multi-country guidebook (usually the shortest chapter!) or they appear to be written from what seems to be second hand knowledge or very cursory knowledge at best. In the past this has meant that if you wanted timely or accurate info you had to spend hours going to little known blogs (BTW, Ms. Goldberg has an excellent one on guess what - Paraguay! check it out at [...]), obscure travel web sites or even more obscure Paraguayan web sites which either are heavy on hype or hopelessly out of date. Having said all this, that state of affairs has always been somewhat the "charm" of visiting Paraguay, as it has traditionally been off the radar of most travellers and you tend to break new ground when you venture off the beaten path. But no more. Ms. Goldberg has written the definitive guide, using her vast "in country" experience due to a lifetime of visiting or living there as well as having family ties and speaking both languages well. Just wish she had done it about 12 years ago, it would of saved me a lot of time and effort! Sigh...so now the hordes of tourista's bored with or scared off by the high prices of Argentina, Uruguay or Brazil will start descending on Paraguay now I guess. Hmmm, might be time to buy into the paddle boat concession on Lago Ypacarai....

Disclaimer: I am an avid fan of the Brandt Guidebook to Paraguay. I purchased the Kindle edition of this book as a result of negative feedback of that book from Peace Corps supporters of the author of this book, the daughter of a Peace Corp person, in order to make an informed judgement. I am also a subscriber to the blog of the author of this book, and a fan of her posts. The setting out and flow of the book is good and easy to read. As a habitual visitor to Paraguay for 5 years I still was able to learn many aspects about the country, which is part of the reason I love Paraguay. The authors description on how to reach Salto Cristal was fantastic, bringing back memories of me driving fruitlessly in the general area last year looking for the road in.I applied 3 tests to the Brandt book when I first bought it. Finding the beaches at Villa Florida, the climb to the top of Cerro Yaguaron, its festival day and the spiritual meaning, and the sacred well at Caacupe. That book excellently covered all 3. This book covered access to the beaches at Villa Florida exactly as I would have liked, but mentioned the wells (pozo) only in passing and Cerro Yaguaron not at all.It did however expand a lot of aspects in other areas that the Brandt book doesn't, and that I did not know, and so in my opinion it evens out.The authors knowledge and love of the country stands out, and is up to date in that it covers the impeachment of President Lugo in June 2012, but then falls down by describing the indigenous tent city in Plaza Uruguaya. I was a resident of Hotel Palmas del Sol in April 2012 when the indigenous were moved on, and a large fence constructed around the Plaza, and it is now a beautiful, peaceful place to relax, and locked at sunset (approx). The Kindle edition, which I purchased, suffers in that the bookmarking is terrible. When one cannot flick through the pages looking for something, then bookmarking is critical. An example: try to find Villarrica. It is not bookmarked, or even named in the Table of Contents. One has to guess which area of the country it is in, then scroll through the entire chapter looking for the town, and hoping you have not guessed wrong. This needs to be fixed. I thought it was a 5 star book, downgraded by the Kindle Ed bookmarking.

GREAT guide to a wonderful (if misunderstood) country. I was a Peace Corps volunteer there in the mid-90's and traveled back 20 years later, so wanted this book to refresh memories. It is excellently written and a perfect resource for visiting the country. I even bought one for a young couple who is venturing there in December to discover Paraguay. She is a young lady who was adopted from there and wants to return to discover her roots..he is giving her the trip as a Christmas gift... This is a wonderful book!

Kirby: King of Comics, by Mark Evanier

From Publishers Weekly

As a teenager, future television and comics writer Evanier became an assistant to Jack Kirby, one of the foremost artists in the history of American comics. Kirby played a major role in shaping the superhero genre, not only through his innovative, dynamic artwork but through collaborating with Stan Lee to create classic Marvel characters like the Fantastic Four, the Hulk and the X-Men. Evanier has now written this magnificently illustrated biography of his mentor. Rather than employing the academic prose that one might expect from an art book, Evanier, a talented raconteur, tells Kirby's life story in an informal, entertaining manner. Although Evanier does not delve into psychological analysis, he brings Kirby's personality vividly alive: a child of the Great Depression, a creative visionary who struggled most of his life to support his family. The book recounts how Kirby was insufficiently appreciated by clueless corporate executives and close-minded comics professionals. But the stunning artwork in this book, taken from private collections, makes the case for Kirby's genius. A landmark work, this is essential reading for comics fans and those who want to better understand the history of the comics medium—or those who just want to enjoy Kirby's incredible artwork. (Mar.) Jack Kirby co-created or created so much of the Marvel Universe (Captain America, Fantastic Four (and so much of Marvel space), Hulk, Thor, Iron Man, Daredevil, X-Men, and others) and shored up one of the main failings of the DC Universe (lack of villains - he gave us Darkseid). The book was lovingly researched, written and compiled by Mark Evanier, a man who began assisting Kirby at DC comics in 1970 when he was 18 years old. He knew the Kirby's very well and interviewed so many people associated with them and comics. There is a shocking amount of sketches, family photos and early sketches (rare, as Kirby just drew on the spot). Even if you don't know much about the history of comics or Marvel and DC, you'll appreciate it. For those of you that love the industry and pride yourself on deep knowledge, you'll still learn a great deal about it.A must have for your comic art/history library.

Great insight into Jack (King) Kirby, the artist. I grew up in the 1960s reading Marvel Comics. Kirby's artwork always left me breathless and desperately (from month to month) waiting for the next issue of the Fantastic Four, Captain America, Thor or whatever comic he was illustrating. This book does great justice to the artist as well as giving an insight into what was happening behind the scenes in Atlas and Marvel Comics. The book includes many rare and interesting photos as well as a great range of Kirby's art over the years. The only shortcoming was that there was not much about Kirby's personal and family life - a more intimate portrait of the man behind the artist.

There was only one Jack Kirby and thank heavens for that. Here is the man responsible for the creation of all the top name brand heroes and villains in the Marvel Universe. This man's sheer output was phenomenal and he helped create and more importantly helped define what a superhero and villain looked like, from Thor, Captain America, The Hulk, X-Men, the list goes on and on! Jack Kirby was literally a one man band and he was a huge influence on my eternal love of comics. No one else could draw a complex piece of equipment like Jack did and his drawings still inspire a sense of wonder in me to this day. Long live the King!

A wonderful addition to anyone's Kirby library. Yes, I've heard others say this adds nothing to the Kirby legend, but if you are looking for a book that will give you a wonderful overview of Jack's career with his amazing pencil drawings writ large in a coffee table format book.... This is your book. It's not a book that attempts to sort out the 'he said-he said' between Stan and Jack, and maybe too many times finishes an observation with the 'we'll leave others to decide...' type of comment. Frustrating for some, but I don't think this was what the book is about. Great quality, with paper that shows the artwork at its best. Highly recommended.

I bought this book in kindle format because of this selling point:Review“…the best part of "Kirby: King of Comics" is the beautiful color art found throughout. There are almost as many pages of art as there are pages of text, which makes the book a treasure.”(The Cleveland Plain Dealer 2017-08-02)That may be true if you get the hardback or paperback version but it is not true of the kindle version. The kindle version is filled with postage stamp size illustrations that barely enlarge to low resolution wastes of your money. Be prepared to google images of Kirby’s work if you want to see what is being talked about. Kirby’s art and your money deserve better than this kindle ripoff. Definitely not a treasure.

Reading about history is fascinating; seeing history spring to life can at times be even better. King of Comics uses words & images of various kinds to *depict* the life of Kirby: visual reproductions, photos, pencils, inks, colors, and original comic art are all represented here.Highlights here for me...*Vintage photos & scans- check out the early, black & white images on pages 34, 67, and 211. Photos like these go a long way to making history spring to life.*Original artwork- I love Kirby's graphite & cream-colored army drawings on pages 66 & 67. I also like the Sandman sketch on page 10, the Popeye sketch on page 35, Kirby's Marines Toys for Tots poster on page 157, and the many scans of inked original comic pages. The Jimmy Olsen scans on pages 166 & 167 are particularly eye-grabbing & highly stylized. Many images in these pages are rare & highly collectible. It's virtually a Kirby museum in print, at about 9-1/2"W x 12-1/2"L, and 220+ pages. Famous comics covers are also reproduced, like Action Comics #1, Marvel Comics #1, Captain America Comics #1, Brave & the Bold #28, Fantastic Four #1, New Gods #1, etc. These images are landmarks in comicbook history, and Kirby's impact in comics' Golden & Silver Ages is amazing to say the least. Objectively speaking, as far as I can understand, there can be only one, *real* King of Comics. Jack Kirby certainly gets my vote!P.S. Also recommended is Excelsior! : The Amazing Life of Stan Lee by Stan Lee & George Mair. It's still available today.

While a great and exhaustive book - a great resource of art for Kirby fans - a totally accurate picture of kirby's end relationship with DC is not presented. The author does point out how they altered Kirby's superman to look like Curt Swan's, but he neglects to mention the Superpowers series. In the 2nd series, Kirby got to draw ALL the DC great superheroes in full Kirbyish glory. Maybe correct it in a 2nd edition, Mr Evanier?
