And his biography of Francis of Assisi is a marvel. It is really unlike any biography I have read. Chesterton does make you work; the way his mind works, his way of phrasing and presenting and contrasting ideas, can be difficult to parse at times, but he succeeded in lifting me to realms I had never imagined.There are many excellent biographies of Francis, and I would suggest reading one or two of them before trying Chesterton, to get the bare facts of his life and a sense of the historical context. Then approach Chesterton; you will never get a better sense of the spirituality of this marvelous man.
I have never read an account of the life of St Francis Assisi as unique that stirred my soul as G. K. Chesterton's account of the saint of Umbria. Not easy reading but well worth the effort if read slowly with patience.
Chesterton's internally personal re-telling of Francis' life, if accepted with is historical period, is informative and inspirational. The perspective is through the eyes of a believer who knows the unbelieving world as his own in prior years. The facts without the miracles are told in an appealing way, with comparisons to other movements of the age. But the miracles are not denied or ignored, they are left to the end - or rather an invitation to explore them is left to the end.
Insightful and thought provoking book on the life of this most inspirational Saint. This book was recommended by a friend and did not disappoint. I would recommend this book to anyone trying to understand who this man was and his impact on the Church and our society

Saint Francis of Assisi is a wonderful insight into the transformation of the man. The only problem I found in reading the book is that it is written in a British 19th century style and is sometimes a bit challenging to read as it is not the normal read for an American in the 21st century. Beyond that I found the book quite fascinating and informative.
